Do you borrow / lend out cds from your collection?
Rooster_Ties replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I both loan and borrow. Was a time when I lost about 2 or 3 common discs every year, from loaning things - and forgetting who had what. But never anything important (I never loan rare discs out, unless they're to somebody I've known for a long time.) For instance, I'll loan KOB out to anybody (even people I haven't known for very long), with the expectation that every other year I'll have to replace it. No biggie. Same with other really common titles that are always cheap to replace with easy-to-find used copies. I'll even "pre-replace" something, if I find a REALLY good deal on a used copy. And there's a couple guys I know who at any given time, have about ten or twenty of my discs -- and I probably have ten or twenty of theirs. But loaning stuff out in those kinds of volumes is reserved for only about 3 guys I know. I'll loan 'em rare stuff too, for the most part. -
Man, that's gonna be one pissed off kid -- if everyone keeps buying all his books away from him. The least they could do is pay full price.

No shit.

I've burned a few things, here and there, sure... But the ratio of what I've bought legit : to what I've burned (but could or should have bought legit) -- is probably something like 300:1 (disc for disc). And most of what I've burned has been OOP and/or hard or very hard to find stuff. For instance, I'll usually look for 6-months to even a full year for something on eBay (and from other sources) before I'll just go and burn something. (No, that's not always the rule for me, but is usually is.) And when I think of the hundreds and hundreds of discs I've looked for for lengthy amounts of time (and then bought legit copies of only after a long search) -- when I could have easily burned copies of them from a buddy -- -- I ain't loosing any sleep over the incredibly small handful of times I've burned without doing such a search (and I can count those times on less than two hands). I ain't perfect, but I'm sure I've spent well over $25,000 on music over the last 10 years, and "not spent" less than $200 on discs that I could or should have kept looking for (in order to buy them legit).

MAJOR EDIT from the version I posted late last night. Bless her soul, my wife cleaned up my original rant into this MUCH more measured version, which I've just sent. Doesn't exactly have the same "punch" to it, but that's the point. She's a saint. I was really in "Flame" mode last night at midnight (and I've already deleted that version from this post). Here's the new version... For those that missed my original post (and be glad you did) --- I was being asked by the governing board I serve on (or rather, a few specific board-members) to come up with FREE musicians for an after-concert cocktail event related to another multi-million dollar "symphonic" performing arts organization in town.

organissimo makes Metro Times Top Ten

Well, I'm never comfortable when listening to them, of that I'm sure. -
You just did.

I thought the previously unreleased material from the IASW box was top drawer. "The Ghetto Walk", in particular (an in all it's 27 minutes of glory), is to my ears as wonderful as anything on the entire set. While the Trane discs might be more "exciting" in the classic sense of the word -- I was and continue to be pretty darn exited by the IASW box.

Hey, has anybody ever gotten banninated before, after only one post?? Edit: What's the record for least number of posts before bannination?? Musicboy was something like only 8 posts -- but what an amazing 8 posts they were.

They're planning on it. Source??

One of the best Cowell-lead dates is his BRILLIANT CIRCLES (Black Lion, 1969). Shame it's also one of THE worst-sounding (worst-recorded?) studio-dates that I've ever heard. Sound sucks, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Includes some amazing Woody Shaw and Tyrone Washington too. Not to be missed, as long as you don't pay a mint for it.

Yeah, no kidding. Where are your priorities at, comrad. Get your head in the game. -
>> << The unknown tune didn't ring any bells for me (will feel like an idiot if it should have). Anybody know it?? Sound quality is decent, though not what anyone would call "great".

Milt Ward (trumpet) - "and Virgo Spectrum" - circa 1976
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
OK, this e-mail I just sent to Spontooneous tells the story... This Milt Ward LP is officially DA BOMB of the year in my book. PS: The link to the ReadAudio clip with one full-length track from this album still works. Look up above this a few posts for the link. -

Late 1960s/early 1970s black-pride soul jazz
Rooster_Ties replied to ghost of miles's topic in Recommendations
Just checked the "A Message from the Tribe" thing by Harrison and Ranelin, and it's definitely one to include. At least two vocal tracks fit very well with the given theme. The first one ("What We Need") talks about needing jobs, and education, and school-books with Black History. Was working on other things while I had it on, but I'll transcribe some of the other lyrics when I get the chance. The other tune ("Angela's Dilemma" I think) also had some serious Black power subjects going on too, though I forget the details at the moment. (Posting this quick, before the forums go down for the upgrade in a few minutes.)
