Well, as long as I was putting in a big Dusty Groove order anyway (I'll post the list in another thread), I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this LP too (meaning "On Jupiter"). $20 hurt (especially for a format I didn't even want), but in the end - I'm sure I'll be glad I have it. Haven't heard U.F.O. in years (close to a decade, at least), but I remember it being a total gas. Can't wait until it gets here - though I'll have to wait even longer to hear it (again), until I can get a buddy to burn it for me. But I'm sure it'll be worth the wait!!

I think we need to add the title "Little Miss Lover" as a medley with "Crosstown Traffic" to the track listing above (talkin' about track #2 probably - though double-check this - I got my info on-line). And not to thread-jack things... but I was just looking around the web to see what other Hendrix tunes Gil ever covered -- and the only one I came up with was "Stone Free" (which is not found on this album). Is that the only other Hendrix tune that Gil ever recorded or performed?? (Meaning besides other performances of the same tunes found here.) I haven't heard this album in years, but I remember Gil's various versions of "Little Wing" quite fondly.

Sam Rivers at Will's Pub in Orlando
Rooster_Ties replied to LWayne's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Lard, I'd kill to hear Sam someday. Would pay $50 a ticket, easily - probably even $75. -
Or maybe with one of Ornette's other kids??

Saw an album of his at a Tower Records when I was in London on my honeymoon in April of 2001. Took note of the name, so I could look it up later when I got home. Never found him in the AMG, nor did I find much else about him on-line. Always wondered what the album was like, though. With a name like "David Ornette Cherry" - I figured he had to be one of Don's kids. Some might even argue that having "Ornette Cherry" in one's name is even crazier than having a name like "Eagle Eye".

Tunes by (relatively) well-known artists...

Who's Cal Massey? -
Every once in a while I'll get desparate enough to hear something that's never been on CD (like this Milt Ward LP), and then have Spontooneous burn it for me. I think it (the Milt Ward), and Tyrone Washington's last leader date ("Do Right") are the only two LP's I've bid on in the last 4 years. Maybe a couple others I'm forgetting, that I didn't win. BTW, I haven't gotten the Ward date in the mail yet, but it should be here any day now!!

Terumasa Hino discussion and recommendations...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I've thought about buying this one a dozen times (since it's so easy to find on-line, and usually for only $5 or $6.) Terumasa Hino & Masabumi Kikuchi Quintet: Acoustic Boogie (Blue Note, 1995) Yanow's AMG review totally pans it (sample quote: "Even for dance music the results are extremely dull with no real development or anything approaching excitement occurring"). To my ears, the on-line samples I've found sound like something very much out of the M-BASE camp (Greg Osby is on the whole date), and they don't sound half bad for typical M-BASE material (which many (even myself sometimes) find a bit boring). Electric bass, but acoustic piano -- is an interesting choice -- and something you don't hear as much in other M-BASE type recordings (though sometimes with Geri Allen guesting). From the on-line clips, it sounds like Osby was in typically good form (given where he was at in 1995). Maybe I'll take the plunge on this one sometime... ...when I see it again for $3 or $4. -
Your favorite TENOR player on the scene today
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Here's a previous thread that might be of some interest: forget 'Waldo'... ---> where's Mark Shim???? If he was recording more these days (or even had recorded more over the years), I'd probably rank him pretty high up on my list of favorite tenor players under 50. -
I've heard it suggested that the rash of LP-only issues of things -- often very obscure releases -- is that they aren't legit (legal) reissues. The thinking (I'm assuming) would be that by being on LP - they'd be less likely to get bothered by the copyright owners, than if they'd done the illegal re-issue on CD.

Has anybody here ever heard this one?? (Besides me?? ) I had a cassette dub of this years ago (long lost, I'm sure - haven't seen it in 10 years), and I remember ON JUPITER being one of THE trippiest Sun Ra records in the whole cannon. The tune U.F.O. has to be heard to be believed -- an all out disco/funk thing, as only Sun Ra could do it!! (Have I been reading too many Dusty Groove reviews?? ) Seriously, though, this thing really is a trip. I used to play U.F.O. on the college radio station all the time, back in the day (made a cart of it off my cassette). I don't own a turntable (shame on me!!! ) -- but I'm thinking of buying this on LP, and getting someone to burn it for me. I can't imagine this is the original cover (can anyone confirm or deny?). And the AMG says... Is this a legal reissue?? Why the hell don't they release it on CD too?? Why just LP?? I'd kill for Tryone Washington's LP "Roots" on CD too -- which was just reissued on vinyl (and vinyl only). What's the deal

OK, maybe there's a lot of these -- or maybe not a lot. Only way to find out is start a thread. In the Terumasa Hino thread just now, I mentioned that Blue Mitchell recorded Hino's "Alone, Alone, and Alone" in 1965 (on Blue's DOWN WITH IT) -- I'm guessing long before many had ever heard of Hino. (Hino wasn't on the date either.) Any other interesting examples?? We should probably limit this to tunes recorded without the composer on the date --- or there'd be hundreds and hundreds of these to mention (so why bother).

OK, Chuck made an ass out of me (not a difficult thing to do, I might add ), before I could go track down my own copy of DOWN WITH IT. Here's what I found... EDIT: Wonder if Blue ever found out what happened to him?? -
OK, who's in -- $5 a head -- on a pool for when this puppy finally sees the legal light of day in the U.S.?? I'll take Tue., March 21st, 2006 -- cuz that's the date closest to my birthday. We get enough people, and the winner will get a free Cellar Door set of their very own!! Pool closes two weeks from today (so on Nov. 21st). My idea, my rules.

Terumasa Hino discussion and recommendations...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Anybody know how the Hino composition "Alone, Alone, and Alone" ended up on Blue Mitchell's DOWN WITH IT?? Is the version Mitchell does the first recorded version?? 1965 is pretty darn early for Hino. What are Hino's earlier/earliest recordings (1960s)?? Mostly sideman dates, I presume (though I see in the AMG he lead his own date in 1967, an album called "Alone, Alone, Alone" - so the tune must have had at least some impact). Are any worth pursuing?? -
Don't have much by or with Terumasa Hino, and am feeling the urge to find some (particularly from the 70's - though recommendations from any decade are welcome). I think the only thing I have with him is this live date on enja from 1993.... Hino / Kikuchi / Togashi - Triple Helix (enja, 1993) Terumasa Hino - trumpet Masabumi Kikuchi - piano Masahiko Togashi - percussion James Genus - bass What else should I get?? Recommendations of dates with Terumasa as a sideman welcome too. Thanks!!

I've almost pulled the trigger on this one a couple times, but either I chicken out - or it goes out of stock by the time I'm ready to buy (like happened this time). How is it?? FWIW, here's the Dusty 'review'... The AMG review is a bit more tepid... I mostly just know Jefferson from all his work with Woody Shaw (and with Art Blakey in the early 70's, which was also with Woody Shaw). "...Atlantis" appears to be his only date as a leader. The AMG lists a bunch of sideman work, though I've not run across any of of it that I can think of -- HERE is the AMG list of his sideman dates (though you may need to be logged into the AMG to see it).

I have and still enjoy a near complete collection of all of The Fixx. At least most of their regular full-length releases, including a bunch of moderately obscure live dates - EU releases mostly. Probably 12-15 CD's total. I started with just their greatest hits disc about 10 years ago, and then over time I found most of the rest of it in used bins, here and there. You know how it goes, "One Thing Leads To Another".

Why Can't I Whistle Along With "Love Her Madly"?
Rooster_Ties replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have that trouble, sometimes, with all the tight harmonies in vocal groups (and even in some unlikley suspects, like the choral vocals in some of Zappa's later groups). Two or three notes played with equal strength, in close, tight harmony, with maybe the lower notes just a tiny bit louder - so as to fool the ear (which normally picks out the highest notes in chords), can really do a number on ya!! -
