Any comic book fans in here?
Rooster_Ties replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Never liked Marvel all that much -- I was a DC Comics fan, all the way. My favorite time frame was the very, very late 60's, all of the 70's, and much of the 80's. Always liked The Flash, Green Lantern, along with a number of other more obscure characters -- like the Secret Society of Super Villans, and whatever the group of young-adult superheros was that was set 1,000 years in the future (with Superboy). I was born in '69, but an older neighbor kid loaned or gave me a whole bunch of his old comics that he no longer wanted (he loved Marvel, so I could pretty much have most of his old CD comics), so that's how I saw so many from the really late 60's and all through the 70's (even if I didn't see them until the early 80's). -
Not the line-up wanting to be discussed in the original post in this thread, but I have fond memories of this release... Don't have a copy any more (haven't seen it in years, did I trade it? ), but I'd love to hear it again. With Osby and another favorite of mine - Gary Thomas - I remember it being a pretty solid outing, including the one Ornette tune it included. Kind of a cross between Harmelodics and M-BASE.

I think Jim's right. Von's worth every penny, but you'd be lucky to sell 100 tickets (at most) to a show like that -- hear in Kansas City. (And when I say 100, I probably mean more like 75 or even 50.) They turned out about 300 to hear Wayne's quartet here in KC a couple weeks ago, but that only filled about 2/3rds of the hall. Tickets were $45 for that, but Shorter has a much, MUCH bigger name than Von does. So $41 seems high to me too -- if you want anybody to come.

What Mainstream titles have been released on CD?? Not very many, I know, but there are at the very least one or two, right? And what were the circumstances of their release? (What label reissued them? - or some other arrangement?) Who owns this catalog these days? Who owned/started it to begin with? How come the albums are all so short? (A couple here in the 40's, but most are in the mid-30's (or even low 30's), and there's actually one that's only like 28 minutes long!!

I've seen a number of these on eBay before, and they all looked like pirate issues to me. Nearly all of George's catalog has been recently reissued on CD (often with a bonus track or two), so there's no reason to be buying these cheap knock-offs.

Not to cause a threadjack, but can somebody point me to the Harold Land "Jame Bond" thread?? Spontoonious was telling me about that one over lunch a couple weeks ago, and I've still never found the thread. (I done did half-a-dozen searches on things like "James Bond" and "Harold Land Bond" - and I ain't done found it yet!!) Thanks!!

For old times sake...

So what's the story behind the two covers?? When was the alternate cover (above) created?? It looks like something very much from back in the day -- either that, or an incredible example of a modern day "turn back the clock"-ism. For direct comparison...

There was??

During his rather lengthy period of musical inactivity (or rather "public" musical inactivity – as I don't want to presume the man did absolutely nothing musical during all those years) -- what sorts of things (if any) did he do in relation to music?? Anything really, anything even remotely related to music. Did he listen any more (or less) than usual to recordings?? The radio?? Live music?? Street musicians?? Notice bird-song more?? - (or less??). Any composition?? Even if only mental, only to never be written (or "played"). In other words, can he describe the role that music (in the very most general sense) played in his life during his lengthy period of "public" musical inactivity??

Has anybody here ever heard this?? (Or ever heard from someone who's heard this??) All Hasaan originals -- or any standards?? (Paging Chuck.)

And speaking of almost $100 a month expenses (see post above), does anybody (here in the U.S.) have any experience with the "flex-saver/health-spending" program, available to many of us through our jobs?? Something about them docking your pay into "health-savings" accounts, which somehow turn out to be tax-free -- ?? I hate paperwork, taxes, and forms - so I haven't looked into it (and plus, before just recently, I've never had any significant health expenses to save for). But I suppose I should really look into this -- so at least that $1,100 per year ( ) that I ought to be spending on my issue mentioned above, at least will be somewhat cheaper. I guess my biggest fear is that they'll somehow come back on me and say that the expense was "optional" or "elective" -- and challenge whether the expense was really "necessary". FWIW, the reason the expense is so high, is that there aren't any decent "generic" drug options for this kind of treatment -- at least not without getting doctor administered injections every week or two (in the arm, you knucklehead!!). But there are other drawbacks (primarily one's testosterone levels very wildly between the time just after one gets the injection (really, really high), to the time before one's next injection (really, really low). Kind of a "roller-coaster" effect. The better (non-generic) treatments involve a daily arm patch (kind of like a nicotine patch), or a topical ointment that I'd rub into my shoulders every day.

I mentioned this in another thread, but in my case - it really ought to go here, in the "health" thread. I've started biking to work about 3 days a week (weather permitting). It's only about 2½ miles per day, round trip - but at least it's something. Also, my new job involves quite a bit of walking, 3 or 4 days a week (I'm in the office the other 1-2 days of the week). So, I'm no longer at a desk, day in and day out, like I did for 10 years. (I’m in my mid-to-late-30's.) That, and like I said before, my wife and I are trying to get out walking several days a week, for about 45-minutes at a stretch --- so I'm hoping that all this new activity will have a positive impact. I'm not really trying to loose weight in any formal kind of way, but I really do need to drop 20 lbs, and more like 30 (or 40) really. I'm 5'11" (ok, 5'10" if I'm honest), and I weigh about 225 lbs. If I could get down to 200, I'd be thrilled. Maybe someday. Trouble is, all my weight is around my middle. (I look like I have a big beer gut, though beer is not the problem, I swear.) Actually, I debated mentioning this here in public - but what the heck, we're all friends... Part of my weight problem, I just discovered several months ago, is because I have really, really low testosterone levels. Been a problem all my life (manifesting itself in other areas, if you know what I mean), and I finally got it checked out for the first time ever about 6 months ago. (Note: Viagra doesn't do a damn thing, if one doesn't have enough testosterone in one's system.) Anyway, I only mention this because among other things, low testosterone levels cause men to really put on (and keep on) weight around their mid-sections. I hope to start a testosterone replacement therapy program within a couple months (almost $100 every month, yikes!! ), and that's supposed to help with weight-loss a bit too. (Not a lot, but every bit helps.) OK, now that I've got that cat out of the bag, anybody else here have any experience with a similar condition? (PM me if you'd rather not go public with it.)

Hey Paul -- Spontoonious and I were gonna give you a call about doing lunch next week (how about Monday, the 31st? - that's really about the only day I can do an extended lunch these days -- though occasionally some Tuesdays I could get out for about 45-minutes to an hour.). Only bringing this up here 1) cuz I know you'll see it, and 2) this thread ought to have an impact on where we decide to eat!! More back on topic, I've been needing to loose a number of pounds for quite a few years (at least 30, maybe 40 lbs -- for 5-7 years). Went to the gym for a while years ago, but I always thought it was always a big hassle. Stuck with it for about a year, before I met my wife, and when I had less going on in my life -- but now, I'm sure I'd never fit it in. But my wife and I have been going for 45-minute walks about 3-5 nights a week, whenever we can find the time. Some weeks we only get out once or twice, but we aim for 4-5 times - if possible. More on this health topic, relative to me, later.

Oh, what the heck -- I'll probably break down and get the new Monk and Trane thing too this weekend. After all, all the cool kids've got one, and I don't want to be left out of the fun!!

You all are gonna laugh (or maybe point and laugh is more like it )... ...but I only heard this date for the very first time about a year or two ago. Had heard the cut 'Stolen Moments' quite a number of times, here and there, but somehow never owned or heard the entire date until relatively recently.

And excellent request. Don't know if I've ever seen one myself.

Michael, can you let out what the instrumentation of that trio might be? Feel free to say no, if you'd rather not say anything yet. My guess is Red, plus piano and drums.

Wow, didn't know there were any pics of Joe with BST. Anything preserved, audio-wise?? Nothing comercial, I know, but any boots floating around??

Much as I love nearly everything I've heard by XTC, my favorites of theirs are the Dukes recordings...

Anyone Have A Pending Order With Red Trumpet?
Rooster_Ties replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, that's for damn sure. Then again, the stuff I was sending out was FREE -- so nobody's out anything either. I still intend to make good on all that, one of these days. I've got a huge project on my plate, that should wrap up within the next week or so -- so maybe I'll have a little time in early November. -

That said -- if I happen to find a disc I'm really looking for in a physical store, I'll pay more than I might otherwise normally do -- especially since I won't have to pay for shipping. Case in point - I just bought Andrew Hill's "Blue Black" for $15 plus tax from a store here in KC. Would $14 or $13 have been a more reasonable price? - sure, especially considering it isn't an import. But it was on an obscure label, and I didn't have to pay for shipping -- so I bit the bullet, and ponied up -- something close $16.50 when tax was added. Yeah, I'm a cheapskate - I'll admit it. But the only way I've been able to buy as much music as I have, is by watching every dollar. For domestic issue commodity releases (major labels, easy to find most places), my goal is to try not to pay any more than about $9 for used discs, $11 for mid-line priced titles, and $14 for full-priced titles. Guess I'm spoiled -- for several years I used to have a sort of "employee discount" at the local Streetside Records (even though I never worked a day there), just cuz I was in there so much, and knew half the people that worked there really well. I used to get full-priced stuff for closer to $12 or $13 per disc, every time -- and mid-line titles for like $9. Used to be able to go in back and see what hadn't been restocked yet, and new titles that hadn't been stocked, or what used stuff was waiting to get stickered and such. Never worked a day there, but most of the time I knew that store better than half the people working there. Bought some new releases on Mondays (with post-dated checks), the whole bit. Have I gotten far enough off topic yet?? -

Well, maybe there were some bargains at RT sometimes - and I just never saw them (or they were on stuff I didn't want -- more likely). I just know their base-line prices were sky high. And when I see that, I rarely go looking for bargains -- cuz I figure the best they can do is to discount from "sky-high" down to more what places like Dusty charge -- which have much more reasonable base-line prices to begin with. Kinda like how I almost never go browsing for discs at Borders or B&N (in their physical stores) -- cuz even if I do find something I want on-sale, 9 times out of 10 their sale price is only about as good as what I could have found on-line, from half-a-dozen different places. (Or not even quite as good.) Exceptions to every rule, of course --- occasionally Borders has had some pretty decent "buy three, get the fourth one free" sales. And that make sense on mid-line priced discs, like RVG's and such -- as long as their base-line price is $12 each (like at Borders), and not $13 each (like at B&N). But even at "25% off", Borders' prices for full-priced CD's (like Conns) are so damn high to begin with (like $18, or even $18.99 ), it still doesn't even make sense to buy from them, even at 25% off. Same goes for their coupons, which don't even begin to make any sense until they're up to the "25% off" level. Anything less than that kind of discount, and I know I can do a buck or two (or even three) less per disc by going on-line.
