Goofy stuff on the web

Sometimes the trailer doesn't quite capture the movie. The Shining: Alternative Trailer -
So, what's the cover of the Savoy look like??

The source of Michael's previous post.

OK, now this is starting to bug me. Can't seem to find out anything solid about Vinson Hill. Been through three or four pages of Google hits. Looks like he's written some beginning jazz instruction books (if it's the same guy), but I can't find anything even remotely biographical about him. Anybody own this thing?? Any clues in the notes??
-
Don't know any of the players, but any piano trio recorded in 1966 is bound to be at least half-interesting. Looking forward to feedback from others here about it. Anybody know if it's ever been on CD?? Yup, it has. Cheaper (and in stock) at Red Trumpet. What's the cover look like??

Lots of greymarket Miles Davis DVD's on eBay
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
BTW, one of my old VHS versions of one of the '67 clips (the 43-minute one, I think), had a time/frame/marker/counter running throughout the footage (the whole 43-minutes), which obscured the bottom 10% or 15% of the screen. It didn't ever bother me much, but I'm currious -- is this the only version of this footage that survives?? Or is there a version floating around without the time/marker stuff. Are both versions floating around?? That said, overall decent picture and sound is more imporant to me than the absence of the time/marker/counter thing. -
Doing a search on eBay for Miles Davis DVD, reveals LOTS of Miles Davis DVD's. I've seen a couple of these before in stores (always of 70's footage), but I see on eBay that the '67 and '69 footage is coming up quite a bit too (which I hadn't expected). Any general or specific suggestions for getting a decent quality DVD, with both of the '67 clips (either on the same DVD, or separately), and getting them with pretty good video and sound quality?? (At least as good as what's available, realizing it ain't gonna sound perfect.) I used to have both of the '67 clips on VHS, but have since misplaced the tape (haven't seen it in years), and would love to find some of this on DVD. Thanks for any advice anyone can offer!! (Wouldn't mind getting some of the '69 footage too, for that matter.) FWIW, this is the auction that really had me tempted... Miles Davis liveVHSvideo 1967 1959 DVD w/ JohnColtrane (matthewshouse) You are bidding an excellent DVD video (region-free) full of amazing and rare footage of Miles Davis' groups. Sketchy, or not, what are the details?? If the SQ is even half-way OK, I'd love to find "In The World" on CD. Do tell!!

Was just scanning the Mosaic website, and noticed that the Hank Mobley set is missing from this page: CLICK HERE. But, you can do a site search for Mobley's name, and the set does come up (Mobley Set - yes, still available, whew!!!) Before I send an e-mail to Mosaic about it, is there anything else that's missing from the general (non-Select) page?? (This one)

None that I've found thus far. Any jazz musicians born on March 18th?? -
OK, this thread is similar to the other "1 album - 1 artist, the essentials thread" thread. EXCEPT, you only get to pick one example (one album) per artist, where that artist is serving as a sideman. What are THE very best sideman dates for each artist??? This should generate interest in terms of sidemen who never lead dates (particularly drummers and/or bass players whose best recordings are not their own dates, or else they didn't lead any/many dates). And also some interesting choices for players who did lots and LOTS of sideman dates, in addition to the dates they lead themselves. Also, since the specific sideman of the date that you're choosing it for isn't self-evident by just posting album covers -- be sure to mention the specific sideman for whom your choice applies. PS: Just like the other thread, double albums are o.k. but NO box sets, mosaics etc.!

Excuse me, Stewart Copeland.

Ornette. And for non-jazz names, I always thought Stewart Copland had the coolest name in all of Rock music.

For what it's worth (not much, probably), The Bastards™ say "early November".

Any comments on this one?? Ever been on CD?? (I'm guessing, probably not) Dusty describes it thusly...

Erich Kleinschuster & Joe Henderson/Carmell Jones

So, then, redoctopus appears to be the only place on the planet where you can get this one?? Dusty just says "Fall 2005". -
I'll bite on the Wayne Shorter and Thad Jones discs. About to send you a PM.

What’s some of greatest discoveries in jazz?
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
OK, this is a fairy minor recent discovery -- but that one tune from the Miles 65-68 box, with just Miles, Herbie, Ron, and Tony (sans Wayne). I think it's called "Thisness" -- discovered in Miles' personal tapes, and only in mono. -

That's what came to mind for me. I agree that it's not as big a discovery, but the story of how this was discovered is as improbably amazing as the story behind the Bird and Diz at Town Hall discovery. ← OK, I've obviously been living in a cave for several years. I've never heard this -- when'd it come out?? What's the story?? -
I should probably apologize for my complete lack of any sort of an apology for all my past behavior.

Milt Ward (trumpet) - "and Virgo Spectrum" - circa 1976
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Crap, got outbid on this LP just now. 24 hours ago there weren't ANY bids. I set up my snipe-bid, and there still weren't any bids as of this morning. Then one. Then a whole bunch of other snipe-bids at the last second. link: Milt Ward And Virgo Spectrum Progressive Jazz LP Went for $63, and I'd only go as high as $55.55. -

How much of a discovery was the Dolphy "Illinois Concert" release?? Guess the tapes had been circulating among collectors for years, so perhaps that sort of thing doesn't count. Great as "Passing Ships" was, it is a recording that was always known to exist. Just what it exactly was, was the discovery -- but the recording itself wasn't exactly "discovered" as such. How about the first live Monk & Trane thing, "Discovery!"?? By the way, this is an EXCELLENT idea for a thread. I'll be very interested in the discussion, and what gets mentioned.
