Don Wilkerson - The Texas Twister (w/ Nat Adderley, Leroy Vinnegar, Sam Jones, Barry Harris, Billy Higgins) Better, more exciting, and MUCH more interesting than any of Wilkerson's BN sides (IMHO). Here, listen for yourself.

I totally agree. I also don't think Maupin had it in him to fill Wayne's shoes. But the particular "Maupin" that showed up for those "IS" sessions came pretty damn close. Closer than almost anyone I've ever heard from around that same time (plus or minus 5 years, let's say). PS: Another interesting Maupin sideman date is the extra "bonus" session from the Conn of Andrew Hill's "Lift Every Voice" (with Lee Morgan). Maupin is also on some of the material from the recent Andrew Hill Select too (two closely related Hill sessions with Charles Tolliver and Pat Patrick -- and the longer of the two sessions with strings).

ARIC EFFRON??

For my money, some of THE most amazing and interesting Maupin on record is disc one of this two disc set... Chick Corea - "The Complete "IS" Sessions" I do like Maupin in other contexts (particularly on the Lee Morgan "Lighthouse" material), but here on the "IS" sessions -- the man is nearly as intense as Wayne Shorter was with Miles (live in concert) around the same time (circa 1969). In fact, Maupin's playing here makes me think he almost could've subbed for Wayne in Miles' group (during that same year, 1969), without the group suffering much from the switch. (In other words, I think Wayne's shoes (with Miles in 1969) are mighty goddamn big to fill around that time -- and the particular Bennie Maupin that showed up for those "IS" sessions is one of the only guys that I think could have even thought about filling them.) PS: I would greatly welcome some discussion about what others think about Maupin's contribution to the "IS" material. Sangry in particular, do you have this release?? Maupin sounds to me like a man possessed, and I've never heard him play with such intensity -- before or since. I'd really be interested in some other opinions about Maupin's playing on those "IS" sessions (particularly disc #1).

I swear I've heard Sun Ra playing Chopin as well, somewhere. Was either on some solo piano gig, or in some very small-group context (best as I can remember). Or else something I saw in a Ra discography once.

Nice David Diamond Appreciation on NPR this morning. You can here it HERE Morning Edition, June 15, 2005 ยท Composer David Diamond died Monday at age 89. Diamond's works have been compared to those by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Blair talks about Diamond's life and about his composition Rounds. -
Well, the Mosaic splits this session across two CD's -- so there one potential reason.

THIS JUST IN! PINK FLOYD TO REFORM FOR LIVE AID!
Rooster_Ties replied to dave9199's topic in Miscellaneous Music
So, is MTV carrying this concert live?? Or any other cable channels?? I've got a VCR that'll record up to 10 hours of material on one 6-hour tape, and it'd be fun to tape the whole thing -- and fast forward through to the parts that are at least worth a glance. Somewhere, buried in a box, I've got all of the original Live Aid concerts on videotape too --- about 10 hours worth of material, edited down from lard knows how much source material (probably close to 15 or 20 hours). A buddy of mine back in college had the whole day's event spread across four video tapes, so one weekend back in college, I dubbed the whole thing for myself, editing everything out except the music. -

Yup, same tune. Not sure that I was the first to notice, but I was the first to post about it --- HERE and HERE. Great tune!! -

"Brilliant Axe Guitarist" -
I was always under the inpression that those earlier copies probably weren't legit promos from Columbia. Didn't someone have one (or a copy of a copy of one), and the sound quality was pretty much bootleg quality?? Also, the packaging for the set on eBay now looks MUCH more legit that the earlier ones.

Hmmm, that's funny. I didn't get nauseated in the slightest. Then again, I didn't watch any of it either. I was surprised to hear the other night that the trial had been going on for something like 4 months. Never even noticed. Pretty much anytime anything "Michael" comes on the TV, I change the channel within about 5 seconds. That's been my policy for years. Speaking as an observer, celebrity trials are a breeze -- as long as you just totally ignore them. (And yes, I ignored the OJ trial(s), and the Kobe trial too -- nearly completely, in both cases.)

Gonna include anything from Gemini (1974)??? I was just listening to this in the car, I swear, not 5 minutes ago!! Gonna try and catch your show tonight -- really looking forward to it -- thanks for the heads up!!!

Just spun the dial, and all the networks are carrying this live (saw a couple minutes of the helicopters following Jackson's entourage on the highway), as are all the 24-hour news stations (of course). Even MTV. Excuse me, but other than Jackson's notoriety as a celebrity, what is even remotely newsworthy about this case -- that it deserves even one 1,000th of the coverage its gotten?? Frankly, I don't give a rat's ass about knowing what the verdict is.

That seems to have done the trick. The file is bigger now too, but more importantly -- the tune comes up in both my media-players correctly, and in my CD burning software correctly too (which it didn't do before). Haven't tried actually burning it yet -- but I'm about sure it'll work this time. THANKS rostasi. Much appreciated!!!!!

Hi everybody, My guess is that something minor is messed up with an mp3 file I'm trying to download and burn to CD. It plays fine on two different media-players on my PC, but when I try to burn it to CD (expanded, so it'll play on a standard CD player), the track always gets cut off at only 2:30 into the tune, which should otherwise be 5:01 in length. Hey, 2:30 is exactly half of 5:01 (or nearly so), so is that a clue about what's wrong with the file??? Perhaps I should mention that one of my media players plays the track correctly, and displays the correct 5:01 length. The other player plays the track correctly, but displays a length of 2:30 (it just keeps playing the track to the end, even though the wrong time is shown). The track is a tune called "Resurrection", an can be found on two different web-pages -- though I'm pretty sure the file is the same on both pages, since I get the same problem no matter which one I download. Here are the two links where the file can be found. http://bartholomusic.com/music.html http://rivaband.com/music.html The musician, Adrian Bartholomew, is local to Kansas City currently, but grew up in Trinidad. Here's his bio, if anybody's interested: http://bartholomusic.com/story.html Anything that can be done to fix this track?? Thanks!! -- Rooster T.

Mosaic licensing, Running Low and Last Chance ques
Rooster_Ties replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I certainly assume that there's a high level of honesty, in practically everything Mosaic does. As far as this particular issue goes, sets on "Last Chance" status always go OOP quickly. Sets on "Running Low" status don't stay that way to terribly long. Don't know what numbers drive what, but whatever the system is - it seems to work. If anything, I think they could put sets on the "Running Low" status even a bit earlier. And certainly in the case of the recently OOP Byrd/Adams set --- that one never even got on the "Running Low" list. -
Attention KC folks - short notice

We've got one!! I just didn't have it on me, cuz my wife usually is the one who carries it. Blue Room used to have a pay phone, but they must've taken it out just within the last couple months -- or so I discovered last night. See you guys in about an hour!! -

Rooster_Ties replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, the good news is that I'm officially "in" for breakfast tomorrow. (Yeah!!) See you guys around 10am, plus or minus. The bad news is that I fucked up, and Greg Tardy is paying at the Blue Room TOMORROW night (as in SATURDAY night), NOT tonight. I got down there tonight around 9:50pm, and they were still between sets. Hung around until the band took the stage, and whoa -- wrong band!! Didn't see Chuck yet, so I hightailed it out of there to try to catch him on his cellphone and give him the heads-up about Tardy not being there tonight. By the time I got home and on the phone, he had gotten to the club, and had already settled in. Oh well, shit happens. Maybe we can all get together tomorrow night instead, and catch Tardy and Helen Sung after all. (Paul, you got a gig??) Last time I saw them, it was a hell of a night to remember. Sung -- I kid you not -- was nearly every bit as good as Mulgrew Miller. I drive an hour to hear her, maybe two. Anyway, I hope Chuck doesn't mind what's playing down there too much -- it's Gerald Dunn's regular group. Nothing as special as Greg Tardy, but not half bad either. See you guys in the morning, 'round 10. Chuck's got my home phone number, and he has the address of the place -- which shouldn't be too hard to find. Cheers!! -- Tom -

So, will this release get covered in the "mainstream" jazz mags?? I'm sure Cadence will review it, but how about the low-down good-for-nothin' glossy rags?? Only asking, cuz this talk of "release of the year" got me thinkin' about the Downbeat polls and such. If nothing else, it'd be nice to get something like this at least on their "top 10" list of historic reissues. (Well, it's not a REissue - but you know what I mean.)
