Keeping Time - a new documentary on Milt Hinton
Rooster_Ties replied to The Mule's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I saw this documentary a couple months ago, at a special screening here in Kansas City (as part of a local film festival). It was fantastic!!!!!!!! I'll try to describe it some more when I get a minute. I may have some promotional info about it lying around too. If you ever get the chance to see this one - DON'T MISS OUT!!!! -

This thread is beginning to grate on my nerves. -
I used to have that "Jazz Birdies of Paradise" release too (sold it a couple years ago), and yes - the sound was pretty bad. But there are a couple much better versions of the exact same concert floating around. Mine is a silver (non-CDR) CD that just has "Antwerp" stamped on it (in small letters), with some bare-bones packaging. Found it maybe three years ago in St. Louis at Euclid Records for about $25, and at the time - I didn't realize that it was the same performance as the "Birdies of Paradise" release. Fortunately the sound was so much better, that I was still glad I picked it up. (I would say it's about 90% as good as the JMY Paris date from about a week later. And the music smokes, of course!!!)

SOURCE Wonder if this is still something that could ever happen??? Especially the Miles 1967 material!!!

I've got the Qwest "Tribute To Miles" disc with Roney, and I've always found it a touch boring too. But somewhere (in who-knows what box), I've got a 2-hour video-tape of this band, recorded live in Italy I think -- and they TOTALLY cook. 10 times better than the comcercial release on CD. Or at least that's what I remember of it, since I haven't looked at it in well over 5 years. But I remember thinking it was totally kick-ass at the time. Wonder what my reaction would be now??? I'll see if I can dig it out, and give it a "spin". (Can you "spin" video-tapes?? )

Junior Cook is reason enough to buy this set.

Got mine, and I love it. If anyone is on the fence about it, NOW'S THE TIME!!!!

Ah yes, I totally forgot about "Thinking of Home" being from 1970. And I always mentally relate "Lift Every Voice" with 1969, but I forget the second session is from 1970 too. By the way, I just sent Michael Cuscuna an e-mail about all the Fall 2004 Conns (via the Mosaic "Feedback" page), and I asked him about the Andrew Hill "Chained" session too (the one that King was gonna release in Japan). No idea if he'll respond, but if he does - I'll be sure to let everyone know.

That couldn't have been a Conn. It had to have been a Rare Groove. Tell me that wasn't a Conn!!!
-
If I'm not mistaken, these would be the very first Conn releases of any BN recordings from the 70's, correct?? I sure can't think of any other post-1969 Conns (though I'm not looking at a full list of Conns in order to be 100% sure).

Don't know if this is true, but it was included in the original post.
-
I will plan to do this as well. This request should be posted on AAJ too, and any other jazz boards that one can think of. Heck, any "progressive classical" boards too, if any such animals exist (and if there are any, somebody please let me know!!).

I've only glanced at them at bn.com, but they appear to be priced as if they are domestic issues. (And they appear to be separate CD's.) -

Me too, by a mile. I hate to say this, but a good part of it is that I don't miss having musically conservative people around, who have an axe to grind about what is and what isn't good music (in their 'esteemed' opinion, of course). Or to put it another way, there's a wide range of interests on this board, and not much in-fighting about "dogmatic" issues (at least in terms of MUSIC, not politics - of course!! ) -
LF: Louis Prima singing "Alla Luna" in Italian???

Thanks Claypone. I'll do some checking around (probably start another thread on AAJ), and see if I can get some independent confirmation of "Che La Luna" being the tune I'm looking for when she said it was called "Alla Luna". (But that title is pretty darn close, so I'm thinking it probably is.) I'll also see if I can find some audio-samples (bn.com didn't have any last night, time to check for others), and run them past her - and see if it matches the tune she's looking for (or she can run them by some relative of hers, who probably would know better than she does). Thanks again!!! Anybody else have any thoughts on this?? - even if they're just confirming what Claypone posted?? -

Not my cat, nor my turntable. Just something I stumbled on, on-line. -
OK, I've done a big search on the AMG (probably not the best place to go looking for these sorts of things), and come up with nothin'. Also did a general search for "Alla Luna" "Louis Prima" on Google, and got plenty o' nothin' too. I'm not 100% sure "Alla Luna" is spelled right, but my brother-in-law's new girlfriend was "mostly sure that's how it's spelled". She and her family are looking for a recording of this particular tune (on CD), as a present for her Grandfather. Any help would be molto appreciado!!! PS: Needs to be sung by Louis Prima, and needs to be sung in Itallian. Does such a recording even exist?? (Before looking in the AMG today, I really didn't have a clue who Louis Prima was.) Thanks again for any and all help!!!
