My wife said the exact same thing. 100 days for killing someone, and 10 years for consensual sex. WTF???

I always said it should have been an RVG, instead of a Conn. Maybe they're finally listening to me!!

Funny, that's how I would also describe the Holland Big Band disc.

Dude, you're scarin' me. Night Ranger?? -- be afraid, be very afraid...

I haven't personally heard Dave's big-band perform live, but I know a couple people who have - and the reviews they gave me were slightly "mixed". "Very good" – to be sure - but not quite up there with his usual quintet performances since about the time Chris Potter joined the band. I own the (first) Holland Big Band disc, and while I did think it was a very good album -- I did find it to be a little less "WOW!!!!" than I was expecting -- based on the steller quality of his three prior quintet albums. I would have given the disc a solid "A-" if it were by any other group (covering Dave Holland tunes in a big-band context), but since it was an actual Dave Holland release (with all the expectations that implies), I would have to give it a "B" or "B+" (some cuts work better for me than others). Great concept, good execution, and "deep" – but not quite as "really DEEP" as it could have maybe been. (Again, expectations were sky-high for me, which may not have been fair.)

For several years (before my wife and I got married, but we lived together for several years), we did our taxes by hand, on paper. Back then I still qualified for the 1040EZ form, so it was all still pretty simple – and my wife didn't mind doing the longer 1040 form (for herself) - in order to claim her student loans as deductions. Then last year, after we bought our first house, we had an independent tax preparer do our taxes for us – for what we thought was a pretty reasonable rate - I think it was about $80 for our combined return. (Less than $100 seemed pretty reasonable to me.) This year, we see that TurboTax is on sale for $40 at of the big Office Supply chains, and with a $10 rebate, it’s only $30 then – and you appear to get both the Turbo Tax "Federal" software, and somehow send away for a their free "State" Turbo Tax software, or they give you a “key” to download it – or something like that. (Last year my wife and I only ever worked and lived within the same state - so we only have to file in one state, Missouri). Plus, supposedly we also get a free "basic" version of Quicken – all for only $30. All of which seems pretty darn cheap – maybe even too cheap (you know – “you get what you pay for” – so if it’s that cheap, is it crap??) ANYWAY, does anyone here have any experience with Turbo Tax, or any of the other PC-based tax-prep software packages -- and what has your experience been with them??? Pro?? Con?? Mixed?? Is Turbo Tax the best one to get?? Or are there other ones that I should also take a look at?? I also saw that H&R-Bock had a home-PC tax-prep program too. I presume that you have to upgrade every year. What is the cost usually?? $10 or $20??

I like "Texas Twister" a whole bunch, in fact - I like it better than any of Wilkerson's BN dates. I found it used on CD for about $8, took a chance, and felt it was WELL worth it. Here are some quotes from others here on the board, about "Texas Twister"... And here's another exchange (buried in a thread about Wynton), with more from Sangry, and a reply from Kevin... Jim, I've been digging this CD for years. It does smoke... and I mean really smoke!! Of course, I also happen to like the Blue Note material too. I happen to dig the "R&B trappings". Give me "Dem Tambourines"! Kevin So if you're on the fence, then get it!!!!

Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Gonna call my buddy in about an hour or two -- when I get back from lunch and some errands. Last call for any opinions (pro or con) about T.S. Monk and his latest band (at least that I might share with my bud, about whether he should go tonight or not)... Thanks!!! -- Rooster T. -
T.S. Monk -- who's in his current band???

Thanks!!! Anyone with other opinions and/or other info??? I'm likely to give my friend a call with your feedback, probably early this afternoon, in a few hours. Thanks!!! -

T.S. is gonna be here in Kansas City tomorrow night, and I just got a call from a buddy of mine asking if I knew who was in T.S.'s current band (and I don't). I'll do a search, myself, later tonight (I'm about half-way out the door right now), but if anybody happens to know, or has any links to any recent reviews of any T.S. Monk shows lately, I'd love to pass them on to my friend. (He's on the fence about going. Me, I'm pinching pennies, so I probably won't go.) I guess the larger question, actually, is whether it's worth probably like $25 for my buddy to go hear T.S. in a concert-hall type appearance these days. Thanks!!!! I'll check back in about an hour or two. Gotta run...
