OK, let's take a stab at this ourselves. And let's start with Miles, and I think we gotta limit ourselves to 5 Miles albums -- cuz it wouldn't make sense to have more than 5% of the "top-100" list go to just one person. Here's what I'd pick... "Kind of Blue" - impossible to not include, 'nuff said. "Birth of the Cool" - hard not to include this one too. "Miles Ahead" - gotta include a "Miles and Gil" album, though one could argue for "Sketches of Spain" instead, I suppose. "Nefertiti" - gotta have something by the 2nd great quintet, though you could argue for others too. (I think "Plugged Nickel" is a bit too 'out there' to include in a 'top 100' list, much as I dearly love it.) "Bitches Brew" - Gotta include somthing from his electric era, and for a number of reasons (yes, including sales), "Bitches Brew" probably is the best choice (even though there are other electric Miles titles I prefer over BB). Any arguments with these choices as the representitive "Miles" titles on our own "top 100" list???

Amen to that suggestion!!

By the way, personally I'd probably pick Hill's "Black Fire" for such a list, over "Point of Departure" (often "PoD" is the one most cited as being 'the' Andrew Hill album). -- but that's just me. Here are a whole bunch of links, to a whole bunch of "top 100 jazz albums"-type lists. I think there are plenty that are better than the list presented in the first post in this thread. Many "top 100 jazz albums" lists: CLICK HERE

New Flaming Lips vs. Old Flaming Lips
Rooster_Ties replied to clifford_thornton's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Don't have a clue, but I thought I'd mention that I saw The Lips perform live at the college I went to, back around 1988. Didn't have any idea who they were back then, and the only thing I remember was that they did a really shitty cover of "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" (which was a huge hit at the time), and it pissed everybody off in the crowd - which I think was their plan. -
Who wants to start fire-bombing AAJ with the news about JC being down???? B) JUST KIDDING!!!!!

Since we really don't have nearly enough Andrew Hill threads on this board ( ), here's another one. Post any pictures of Andrew Hill that you can find, especially any that are slightly less well-known. Thanks!!!

Haven't seen the Arkestra in a few years (last time was probably in 1999 or so), but I've caught them 3 different times here in Kansas City, under Allan's leadership. They were "very good" to "great" all three times.

It was recorded in a NYC studio. Brandon, I had no idea you grew up in a NYC studio. Actually, that explains quite a bit, now that I think of it.

One of my favorite Mobley discs too. Are my ears on crooked??

Hello everyone, Just wanted to say "HI!!" - and thanks, again, for all your messages of support. My wife and I got back home (to Kansas City) late last week, and we've been trying to get back in the swing of things this weekend, after having been gone for two weeks. I'm calling my Dad every two or three days, and he seems to be doing pretty well. He has updates for me about what he's thinking about for "dinner" for the next couple days, and he's doing laundry by himself for almost the first time in his whole life. But he's a very resourceful guy (he was a mechanical engineer, by profession), so he's always been good at figuring things out. I've been lurking on the board, now and then, for about a week - but I really haven't been in the mood to jump back into things just yet. It's not that I'm in a big depression or anything -- it's just that I'm naturally stepping back, and taking stock in things. As many of you know, I'm in the process of changing careers, and job-hunting, so my mom's unexpected passing just further highlights the "crossroads" I find myself at in life. Anyway, I didn't want you all to worry about me. My wife and I, and my Dad -- are all doing fine. Through a combination of "sick leave" and "bereavement", plus a day or two of "vacation" leave, my wife was able to spend the entire two weeks with my Dad and me in St. Louis, as we went through the events outlined in my posts in this thread. Fortunately, my wife knew my mom for 6 or 7 years, and they were always on great terms. I count myself very lucky that both of my parents lived long enough so that I could have a good, solid decade of time where we were all adults. And in the last 5 years, we had all really grown to enjoy each other’s company, for day-trips, and fairly frequent visits. In short, I was lucky enough to have developed "friendships" with my parents -- which is a place I certainly hadn't expected to be, after the typical turmoil of my high school and college years. Well, again, thanks to all of you for your words of encouragement. I'll probably be on the board this week a bit more, though I have a mountain of things to try to get done this week, including finishing a handful of job applications for positions that were announced in late January -- which I would have preferred to have submitted a week or two ago. (Hopefully a couple of them are still open, and still accepting applications.) See you all on the board... -
I agree, Bev. A couple of weeks ago I nearly posted a link here to the "Ask Jeremy Pelt" thread over at AAJ. I knew there are Pelt fans here who, if they hadn't already seen it, would've been interested. As it was I simply forgot to post the link--certainly the thought that Jim Alfredson would object never occurred to me, because I don't believe he would have. I wish I had posted it, because I could've pointed to it in my PMs with Mike Ricci. As it was I could say only that I've directed people to AAJ (particularly neophytes) and that I've routinely spoken well of it here & elsewhere. I still think Mike would serve the AAJ community and his own interests better by serving the entire jazz community. There's some sadness entwined with my anger on this issue, because I did enjoy the AAJ board for what it had to offer. Such a censorious attitude on the part of its administrator, however, now compels me to stay away. Well, as luck would have it, back on December 8th, I posted a link to the AAJ "Ask Jeremy Pelt" thread, right here on the Organissimo board. Here's the very post I'm talking about, LINK: Jeremy Pelt - one hell of an interesting trumpeter, New on the scene, is he 'baad' or what!!. Ghost, please feel free to send a PM to Mike at AAJ pointing out to him that there's plenty of cross-pollination going on, on both boards. This whole mess is about 27 shades of ugly, with plenty of blame to go around. IMHO, Mike certainly isn't handing things nearly as well as he could (or "should", if I may be so bold as to say so in public), meaning in the way he's running his board (though it's certainly his board to run however he likes). And Dan starting the "AAJ is run by an asshole" threads was about as childish as childish gets. (You're certainly a friend of mine, Dan, but you really gotta do something about that occasionally "very short" fuse of yours. Just because you think Mike had it commin' to him, that doesn't mean you had to give it to him.) And the related threads (both here and there), are none too pretty either. What a mess...

Me too. Of course, several other Shorter dates are brilliant too. But I also listed to "Etc." quite a bit more than any other Shorter disc.

I barely know the difference between a basketball and a soccer ball (I think they're both round, right? ), but my wife said I had to answer this thread, since nobody else here had yet. She's a big NCAA Basketball nut, and a Kansas Jayhawk, through and through. I mentioned this thread to her - and she said "yeah, that did look like a great game. Big three-pointer right a the very end". (Whatever that means. )

That AMG review of "Symbols..." is WAY off the mark. As soon as I can find it, I'll get you a better review. I know there's one one-line, just take me a sec to find it. (I probably can't figure out how to cut-n-paste both the URL for the article, and the article itself (while I'm using my mom's iMac), so you may have to be content with just the article, when I find it. Off to find it now.) OK, here's a good one... And, actually, here's the review I was thinking of...
