  1. How about a general discussion about organists (here and elsewhere) and their opinions (good and bad) towards playing piano, and maybe their approach to piano??? (Even if that approach is very reluctant, at best.) I know I've read somewhere around here - maybe from b3-er? (or maybe not) - that some organists (himself included?) really dislike playing piano. That's fair. There are plenty of pianists who dislike playing organ, for all kinds of reasons -- so it stands to reason that the reverse would be true (for all kinds of equally valid reasons). And for the organists on this board who dislike piano, does that dislike extend equally to Fender playing?? And if so, why?? Or if not, why?? Also, is there any significant discussion to be had about recordings by organists, playing piano (or Fender)?? I was just listening to Woody Shaw's very first album (his demo for BN with Joe Henderson, that later came out on Muse), along with the Nathan Davis album with Woody from about the same year. Both feature Larry Young on piano. I'm not sure if I know enough to pick out anything particularly interesting to say about Larry's piano-playing, relative to his organ-playing -- but maybe some others here (with better ears than I have) can make some comparisons (significant similarities, or differences). Did any other organists ever record on piano, other than a very few sessions very, very early in their careers?? Those sides with Larry Young are all from the early to mid-60's, and are from the same time-period as several of his pre-BN days - so they are contemporaneous with some of his organ recordings. Did John Patton ever record on piano?? Jimmy Smith?? Any of the non-BN organists?? I’m guessing probably not (though Jimmy Smith might have, VERY early on – like in the very early 50’s maybe). I guess, then, are there any semi-important piano (or maybe also Fender) recordings by guys who were organists 90+% of the time, otherwise??? And another question for b3-er (and the other organists here too). If you had an offer to play a regular piano gig with decent money (respectable bread, but nothing any better or worse that you usually get otherwise), how much would you be willing to take such a gig?? Assume you’re playing with decent players in a standard piano-trio, or maybe a quartet, with one horn. (Assume also that it doesn't cut into your other gigs, so it’s not taking away from time you could be gigging on organ.)
  2. Re: the article that started this thread... Neither of my cats will even let me touch their paws in order to clip their claws, and one of them won't even let me lightly touch her back paws (or her belly) – even for 1/10 of a second – without her claws and teeth coming out, full force. And, come to think of it, NONE of the cats I've ever had were really much different. SO, I can't imagine any cat putting up with any kind of sexual shenanigans, for even 2 seconds. So, either the "cats and dogs" aspect of the article is really "mostly dogs, plus two or three loose cats". Or, maybe (more likely) the article is simply total bullshit.
  3. I only know "Katanga!" - but it's a 5-star disc in my book, without a doubt. I definitely plan to get this Select one of these days, for sure!!! But I'd be curious to hear about the rest of the material too. (So I'm looking foward to other responses to this thread.)
  4. I always appreciated Tom's input on the BNBB. It was never as much as I would have liked, but it was certainly much better than nothing. I remember asking several obscure questions of him, and getting answers to most of my questions. His periodic posts are the only thing I miss about the old BNBB. Still, I'd much rather have this, than go back to that.
  5. I have (and love) Rufus' first two albums. ("Poses" is the 2nd one, and I'm too lazy to look up the name of the first one.) I understand he also has a third album out too, just in the last few months, but I haven't picked it up yet --- but I certainly will, one of these days. His tunes are very interesting, and the arrangements are great. And, his voice is really wonderful. He sings with a "full" voice nearly all the time, and I understand he was a vocal-performance major in college. Hopefully he will have a very long career, and I look forward to hearing more for him in the future.
  6. 99.999999998% chance the "Fuchsia Swing Song" RVG is a mistake, from some post somebody made somewhere, or some "upcoming releases" that somebody goofed up on. THERE'S NO CHANCE IN HELL THAT BN WOULD RELEASE A TITLE AS A CONN, AND THEN TURN AROUND AND RE-RELEASE IT AS AN RVG LESS THAN ONE YEAR LATER.
  7. I think this is a great session. Maybe not quite "top-5" great, but a very solid date, to my ears. The Conn has an extra tune not found on the TOCJ, so go for the Conn if you have a choice (in my opinion).
  8. Can't say I'm particularly thrilled with the cover. (Not that the cover matters -- I know, I know - "it's the music, stupid".) I haven't heard any of this music before. Miles in the early 50's isn't the highest on the spending priorities right now, but if I saw it cheap enough, I'd probably spring for it.
  9. In case anybody missed it the first time... B) B) B)
  10. Link: HEY YA, CHARLIE BROWN!!!
  11. My wife said the exact same thing. 100 days for killing someone, and 10 years for consensual sex. WTF???
  12. I always said it should have been an RVG, instead of a Conn. Maybe they're finally listening to me!!
  13. Funny, that's how I would also describe the Holland Big Band disc.
  14. Dude, you're scarin' me. Night Ranger?? -- be afraid, be very afraid...
  15. I haven't personally heard Dave's big-band perform live, but I know a couple people who have - and the reviews they gave me were slightly "mixed". "Very good" – to be sure - but not quite up there with his usual quintet performances since about the time Chris Potter joined the band. I own the (first) Holland Big Band disc, and while I did think it was a very good album -- I did find it to be a little less "WOW!!!!" than I was expecting -- based on the steller quality of his three prior quintet albums. I would have given the disc a solid "A-" if it were by any other group (covering Dave Holland tunes in a big-band context), but since it was an actual Dave Holland release (with all the expectations that implies), I would have to give it a "B" or "B+" (some cuts work better for me than others). Great concept, good execution, and "deep" – but not quite as "really DEEP" as it could have maybe been. (Again, expectations were sky-high for me, which may not have been fair.)
  16. ROTFLOL!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. For several years (before my wife and I got married, but we lived together for several years), we did our taxes by hand, on paper. Back then I still qualified for the 1040EZ form, so it was all still pretty simple – and my wife didn't mind doing the longer 1040 form (for herself) - in order to claim her student loans as deductions. Then last year, after we bought our first house, we had an independent tax preparer do our taxes for us – for what we thought was a pretty reasonable rate - I think it was about $80 for our combined return. (Less than $100 seemed pretty reasonable to me.) This year, we see that TurboTax is on sale for $40 at of the big Office Supply chains, and with a $10 rebate, it’s only $30 then – and you appear to get both the Turbo Tax "Federal" software, and somehow send away for a their free "State" Turbo Tax software, or they give you a “key” to download it – or something like that. (Last year my wife and I only ever worked and lived within the same state - so we only have to file in one state, Missouri). Plus, supposedly we also get a free "basic" version of Quicken – all for only $30. All of which seems pretty darn cheap – maybe even too cheap (you know – “you get what you pay for” – so if it’s that cheap, is it crap??) ANYWAY, does anyone here have any experience with Turbo Tax, or any of the other PC-based tax-prep software packages -- and what has your experience been with them??? Pro?? Con?? Mixed?? Is Turbo Tax the best one to get?? Or are there other ones that I should also take a look at?? I also saw that H&R-Bock had a home-PC tax-prep program too. I presume that you have to upgrade every year. What is the cost usually?? $10 or $20??
  18. I like "Texas Twister" a whole bunch, in fact - I like it better than any of Wilkerson's BN dates. I found it used on CD for about $8, took a chance, and felt it was WELL worth it. Here are some quotes from others here on the board, about "Texas Twister"... And here's another exchange (buried in a thread about Wynton), with more from Sangry, and a reply from Kevin... Jim, I've been digging this CD for years. It does smoke... and I mean really smoke!! Of course, I also happen to like the Blue Note material too. I happen to dig the "R&B trappings". Give me "Dem Tambourines"! Kevin So if you're on the fence, then get it!!!!
  19. No Shit!!!
  20. Wow!! I've always loved the cover of "Love Call". And damn!! - an "Evolution" shirt?? Can't wait to see what the come up with next!!!
  21. Gonna call my buddy in about an hour or two -- when I get back from lunch and some errands. Last call for any opinions (pro or con) about T.S. Monk and his latest band (at least that I might share with my bud, about whether he should go tonight or not)... Thanks!!! -- Rooster T.
  22. Thanks!!! Anyone with other opinions and/or other info??? I'm likely to give my friend a call with your feedback, probably early this afternoon, in a few hours. Thanks!!!
