  1. For the record I said that Pelt could maybe end up being (meaning in the future) end up being the best thing to happen to trumpet since Woody Shaw. Or (possibly) that could might already be (the best thing to happen to trumpet since Woody Shaw). I never said he was already as good as Woody Shaw. BUT, I do think Pelt might have the potential to be as good as Woody, perhaps. Or maybe not. Only time will tell...
  2. What 'covers' of Ornette tunes, that include piano, work best in your opinion, and why??? And I guess while we're at it -- which one's DON'T work (with piano), and why??? -- as a parallel discussion. ========== AND, while we're at it - let's also talk about Ornette's few recordings with piano, both very early in his career (including the bootlegs of Ornette's original quartet, with Paul Bley in I think it's 1959), and then again pretty recently - with the pair of "Sound Museum" releases, and the album with Joachim Kühn. How well does piano work in Ornette's context?? What about it works well, and what doesn't?? How have different players approached his idiom on piano?? I guess then, the question really is... What the hell is "harmolodic" piano anyway?????? Discuss...
  3. For about the last week, I've been totally diggin' on... Johnny Griffin: "Change of Pace" (Riverside/OJC, 1961/1999) Johnny Griffin - Tenor Julius Watkins - French Horn Bill Lee & Larry Gales - Basses (both players on all cuts) Ben Riley - Drums ...which I got in a trade with somebody here on the board (thanks!!). What a totally refreshing date!! I had never heard this album before, nor had I really even heard all that much Johnny Griffin - for that matter. So then, I thought I'd start this thread to discuss our favorite piano-less, organ-less, and guitar-less small-group recordings – particularly those recorded before about 1970. And unless people think otherwise, why don't we kinda NOT focus on Ornette and Don Cherry's contributions in this discussion, cuz I suspect we've all been there and done that, and more importantly - we mostly probably all know that. I guess what I'm really looking for here, is to discover some cool recordings that I might otherwise be unaware of. Hey, Bird didn't record with just bass and drums ever, by any chance - did he?? Even just one tune?? (Or even during one solo – like maybe the piano laid-out for a chorus or two.) Who was the first to record with just one horn (or up to two or three horns tops), with only bass and drums as the rhythm section??? Any notable "chordal intrument"-less recordings from the 40's or earlier???
  4. I thought of Douglas too, but for some reason - I didn't include him. Don't know why, though, cuz he could definitely hang in Andrew's world, for sure!!! Moran's too, for that matter.
  5. FYI, here's his bio (with a few things set in bold/purple by me), from his website... Very interesting.
  6. From another thread... Cool!! At one time, I didn't think it was possible for people to delete their own threads - meaning threads they had started themselves. Did this change at some point, or did I just never notice this feature before?? (In fact, I seem to remember asking b3-er and/or Use3D to delete a thread or two for me, a few months ago...) Anyway, nice to see this feature, and wanted to point it out for others...
  7. I've often wondered this too. Also, the number of "piano-trio plus sax" albums over the years, must be 10 times the number of "piano-trio plus trumpet". 10 times?? - make that 20 or 30 times, now that I think of it. Don't mean to derail my own thread, but the question posed is a good one. Ideas?? Are there just way more sax players out there, than trumpet players?? That could be it, right there.
  8. Thanks!!! a sample...
  9. Enough stuff from another thread that I thought I'd give Jeremy Pelt his own "corner", so to speak... Wow, indeed!!!! One of the most exciting young (under 35) trumpet players I've heard in years. (I understand he's only like 26 or 27 now.) Holy shit, there's like 3 hours of live Jeremy Pelt MP3's on his website. I had no idea!!! Thanks, man!!!! I listened to Vols 1 & 2 (not visible on the web-site, but available through the directory/link that 'couw' provided), and man - they're simply amazing. And so are Vols 3-5, meaning the one's still up on his web-site. I've already got Pelt's "Insight" on Criss Cross (got it about a month ago), along with two of Ralph Peterson's Criss Cross albums with Pelt. Man, he's like maybe the most exciting young trumpet player I've ever heard - or at least I'm struggling to think of anyone else I've been this excited about before. I say this especially after hearing those live MP3's - which are all some pretty bad-ass live sessions. Gotta burn those off, that's for sure!! IMHO, Jeremy Pelt appears to me, like he could maybe end up being the best thing to happen to trumpet since Woody Shaw. Hell, he might even be that already!! Discuss.
  10. In musical contexts with Andrew Hill and Jason Moran (both as leaders and as sidemen), it seems like we get sax more frequently than trumpers. So the, who are some trumpet players you'd like to hear record with Andrew Hill or Jason Moran?? Pretend Hill and Moran are each planning to do an album with the following instrumentation... trumpet, piano, bass, drums - (and no sax) Who would be good in the trumpet spot??? I'll throw out a couple names I thought of rather quickly... Jeremy Pelt Ralph Allesi Tim Hagans, perhaps After that, I start to run out of ideas, though I'm certain there've gotta be others who could do it well, and even some who would bring something entirely different to the project -- I'm thinking of guys like... Tomasz Stanko or Kenny Wheeler ...who could perhaps serve in a role slightly more akin to that of Benny Maupin's bass-clarinet work on "Bitches Brew" -- or at least provide a vibe more like that, meaning one that would be really different than where I think either Hill's or Moran's musical ideas are normally at. (And by that, I mean that they could add a color, or shading to the proceedings -- as opposed to being an "in your face" soloist, like Freddie was on Herbie's "Empyrean Isles")
  11. Thanks Kevin!! Much appreciated, as always.
  12. If I'm not mistaken, isn't there at least one Grammy winner, right here on this board???
  13. I thought it was gonna be sweet. But if I had checked the label first, I never woulda bought it. Actually the label says that one serving size has 19% of the daily reccomended salt intake. But it's only when you realize that there are TWO "8oz servings" in the 16oz bottle, that you also suddenly realize that the frickin' thing ought to be called "really god-damn salty-flavored yogurt soda"!!!
  14. Just shut the fuckin' tube off, completely - that's my solution. Anymore, I pretty much only watch the 5:30pm national news (usually ABC), and "The News Hour" on PBS at 6pm (never hardly any Kobe there!!!), and then "The Daily Show" at 10pm. I check CNN.com and ABCNews.com off and on during the day, but I almost never turn on the 24-hour news stations anymore, cuz they all gone and FOX-i-fied themselves. Reminds me of when the whole O.J. trial was going on. I had just moved to Kansas City, and didn't have a TV that worked. I used to read the newspaper for updates, maybe once a week at most (and often just the first couple paragraphs of the story, and to hell with the rest). But my main point is that I didn't have a TV for most of that year, and I am SO incredibly glad that I didn't see any of the O.J. media crap on TV. All my coworkers and friends were complaining about it, but I barely even knew what they were talkin' about!!!
  15. Sorry to hear about that flat, man. I haven't had a flat in over 15 years, but I remember back in highschool ('84-'87) - there was this one year where I had 3 flats, like all in the very same 1 or 2 month period. Might have even been 4 flats, now that I think of it. One was when it was raining cats and dogs, and I had to change the tire on the side of a major highway, only about a mile from home. But I got really good at changin' flats by the 3rd or 4th one.
  16. With dinner tonight, I bought a small 16oz bottle of this ("Yogurt Soda"), and just wanted to say: YUCK!!!! I usually like a bunch of the weird stuff I find at our local middle-eastern combination “bakery / mini-grocery-store / restaurant (cafeteria-style)” emporium -- but I gotta go on record as saying that "Yogurt Soda" is some mighty nasty shit. One 16oz bottle has enough salt in it for 40% of your recommended daily intake. Imagine taking plain soda water, mixing it with plain yogurt, and pouring in about half-a-cup of salt. Uuugh...
  17. Yeah - well just you wait until I pick THIS as my next choice for Album of the Week!!!!!
  18. Isn't she Ravi Shankar's mother's granddaughter? What Jim said... ...only twice removed.
  19. Hey Kev, Did you happen notice anything else interesting on Michael's desk??? I'm not fishing for anything in particular, but I would love to hear about what Michael's listening to, that (like you said) might be on his list of things to possibly release stateside relatively soon. I'd be curious to hear about the next batch of RVG's (after the one's this Fall), although I'm totally chompin' at the bit to hear about what might be in the next batch of Conns (meaning the one's after October, presumably next Summer sometime). After all, it's always the Conns that get me all fired up!! Thanks!! -- Rooster T.
  20. If it's the disc of Chadwick's chamber music, then I must say that it's a really winner in my book. One of the best of the series, IMHO. Very solid, and well within the same ballpark as, say, Brahms - though clearly there's something else going on there too. And, it would even be a bargin at twice the price!!
  21. Saw the title of this thread, and well, I'm not sure if they actually are "giants"... ...but there's always these guys... They Might Be Giants

    Sep RVGs

I know this question was directed at FFA, but I'll take it too. I think it does need an upgrade. It's not the worst sounding title from BN discs released during the late 80's, but I'm sure the new one will be better. I hear distortion in some of the more fiery passages in the horns. Also, the piano sounds a touch muddy to me. I've got pretty cheap stereo equipment (I've always put all my money in new music, always putting up with low-fi playback mechanisms), but even on the low-end bookshelf system I have - I can hear room for improvement.

    Sep RVGs

I gotta say that "Mode For Joe" is nearly my all-time favorite Joe Henderson album (with "Power To The People" a close second). So I'm sure on that basis alone, I'll be taking the plunge with the upcoming RVG. I do find the current late 80's CD issue sonically lacking, but not criminally so --- but my hunch is that the RVG will be better. (I usually don't do the upgrade, but in this case, I can't help it - especially at only $10 or $11 for RVG's, instead of $15 or $16 for Conns.) Yup, "MFJ" is Desert-Island-Disc material for me too, for sure!! Apart from incredible tunes, and perhaps even more incredible sidemen -- I love the fact that it presents Joe and Joe's tunes in arrangements with a three-horn front-line, which I think Joe only did one other time (with "The Kicker" in '67). Also, I think it's probably one of Lee Morgan's very strongest showings after 1965 (which is really saying something, since in my book, nearly everything he plays on turns to gold, especially from the mid 60's on). When push comes to shove, MFJ is probably on my personal 'top-5 list' of favorite Blue Note albums. I don't listen to it day in and day out (like who listens to Kind of Blue every other day, or even every week or month), but I do consider it to be one of the finest examples of progressive hard-bop from the 60's.
  24. Just an FYI... The phrase "More information here." would seem like it ought to be a link to another page, but it (currently) doesn't link to anything - it's just regular text on the page (it's right at the bottom of the list of "upcoming gigs", on the front page). By the way, I like that you call them "gigs" instead of "shows".
