  1. Well no, those single discs on Fantasy contained a variety of sessions not in Vol. 1 (I guess they'd have been in Vol. 2) - but I've never really tried to get those (I remember I once figured out which ones I'd have to get, but I forgot). Anyway, guess you got the Rowles, but not generally "all Nocturne", sorry if I got you wrong and you know that
  2. I think you're right And I think that's where they (Mosaic) did a less good job than the Nocturne box (didn't yet try to find it).
  3. I'sn't the Rowles the same that's in the Pacific Jazz Piano Trios Select? I've not got the Nocturne set around to compare ... but yes, there's more around. Too bad this lovely set didn't sell enough for them to do Volume 2, it's one where they did things right! (There's even something they included, I think, that Mosaic missed ... need to dig out the Nocturne box, no clue where it could be though). Now playing: That box kinda took me by surprise, I had no idea it might even be around as a possibility ... I'd hardly known any of the material before (I think the lone one I had as OJCCD is "The Panther" - excellent quartet date w/Flanagan). Anyway, I've not nearly spent enough time with this and since I get a kick out of LTD right now, it's the time to give this (or parts of it) another spin. Now discs 4 and 5 (the larger parts of both), the Left Bank recording with Bobby Timmons - messy stuff, but I love it! Afterwards probably the Montreux set with Junior Mance and then "The Panther" (which goes into disc 7) ... oh, the set has plenty of previously unissued alternates. Not that I could really point out any merits or say they're superfluous at this point, but still ... plenty of prev. unissued alternates around ... from the Power/Tower sessions, there's one new tune and six alternates all previously unissued, plus one alt that was on some Dex plays the blues thing. There are also three newly issued alternates from "The Panther", one from "The Chase" with Jug (plus one already on the CD reissue), four from "The Jumpin' Blues" (plus one on that blues thingy), one from the "Generation" session (plus two already added to CDs), and finally an additional tune from "Blues à la Suisse" ... (and the tune added to the CD reissue of the Montreux set is of course there, too, as are all prev. unissued titles added to previous reissues, I reckon). Anyway, great set, a true treasure trove!
  4. Yep, that series was excellent, I got about two dozen of 'em ... another one to look out for is the Pacific half of the McCann/Turrentine bargain ... and they did "Tenorman", too!) I'd still ove to see the missig one of the Lighthouse Crusaders ... wouldn't that be one for Dustygroove? They never did EMI stuff though, as far as I know, only Universal and lately Concord?
  5. Yep, I agree ... though as I mentioned I'm still tempted by the "all in one" package in order to have it all in chronological order (does the 16 disc set also omit the handful of cuts sans Coltrane from "The Cats", the Draper album, the one w/Lady Q? anyone knows, I'd need to bether my friend again, but he's usually away from his CDs over the weekend, so ...)
  6. Mine's under lock and key 1500 miles away (I hope) played the end of disc 2 again ... the one with the three vocal singers ... even there, there's some delightful trumpet/conret playing to be heard looking forward to the jazz stuff (discs 3 and 4), probably make that today's late night listen ...
  7. getting my first taste ... perfect for tonight (disc one, probably disc two as well afterwards)
  8. I've got the Miles on order now ... guess I'll know more in about a week's time
  9. afternoon and evening, into disc 4 (ending with all the fine Power/Tower material)
  10. Not sure ... I only just got it (I'm not saying "got aware", since I might have seen it and forgotten again years ago), but that's indeed one of those about which that thread initially was intended to be about (it got, of course, derailed as well).
  11. missed this in the earlier thread ... I'll ask around, haven't seen/heard this though, so I guess chances are rather slim
  12. Remember this thread? (And look who started it )
  13. just got it ... can help you if you still need it, just drop me a note and I'll tend to it over the weekend!
  14. last third of disc one and all of disc two ... that is "Dexter Calling", "Landslide" and the one cut from the aborted session with Sonny Stitt
  15. Indeed they did - stuff like their Tubby Hayes box is most welcome. Guess I need the Harriott eventually, too ... granted I'd prefer more Dutton/Vocalion reissues (and hey, some of those might indeed have been surpassed before release by - other - PD reissues ... and hey again, that scenario hurts me when it's about small labels, call me sentimental, but I still think I made a point or two above that remain valid, even if we give the majors the finger, which I'm most ready to do). Not sure, wasn't the Spotlite set around for most of the time? In fact it might still be around:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000026QCO/ Now for the Savoys ...
  16. I'd even guess they do ... and to flock the dead ol' mare some more, I don't disagree with anything Big Beat Steve says above (partly in reply to me), and I guess he actually knows What I was pointing out is how crappy the rock bottom of these cheapo labels is - and it was my understanding this thread was more about that than the okay to fine reissues often coming from Fresh Sound or Lonehill or others of the kind. I was talking' "27 original albums on 9 discs for 3 eurozlotys" and crappy Definitive boxes (such as the one that prompted this thread) and crappy Membran boxes ... those okay to fine reissues, I assume (I don't have that many of 'em and didn't run checks) don't use MP3 to start with. There's differences between PD labels and the quality of their product, and the mere fact that some of these ARE crap and the fact that I pointed that out does not mean I'm saying the ALL are crap.
  17. Yup, that's why I often buy discs straight from the musician at gigs, whenever I have enough cash on me and they don't ask ridiculous prices, that is ... But re: "if people don't like these products they won't buy them", I think that is oversimplifying it quite a bit, since "these products" stop better product from being produced. Now you can argue "people don't want better product" and maybe you're right. But are wi in such dark times again, really?
  18. That's exactly what I meant re: PD. I don't see a profit-based corporation paying for something they don't have to. Not in this world, not in this time. And that would explain why it's a European reissue (instead of them just re-pressing the old Fantasy box, like they did with a few others, Wes M., Bill E. Riversides, I think? those where high-price editions) that has to be imported elsewhere (and actually shouldn't be sold in the US at all, I guess - but there it goes again ...).
  19. I don't think they leave it at that ... they "improve" by running filters and stuff ... and in the worst case, they use MP3 sources or damaged files (I think the Gigi Gryce 8 albums set has some of those? it was discussed here, a while ago).
  20. But it would be nice if these legitimate thieves were in love with the music a bit more and trying a bit harder to deliver quality stuff, instead of just flunking and pretending in order to get our hard earned money ... my main beef with Definitive is really that they're the worst (at least this side of the pathetic "8 Classic Albums" sets). But as one of our good friends here often says: you get what you pay for
  21. I guess it's essentially just a european scaled-down reissue of the old box ... probably european-only due to PD. And yeah, I guess indeed the new "Chronicle" might be the same.
  22. Here's what it says on the Coltrane box: (P) 2011 © 1991 Fantasy Inc. Prestige Records, Tenth & Parker, Berkley, CA 94710, All Rights Reserved. Made in the EU. LC 15025, Universal - Universal Music Group International.
