This still bothers me ... how does your box look? Do the discs have all the Sony numbers and stuff included? Would they really bother to reproduce all that, down to every tiny detail (the black-in-black print around the fake-label on the top of the discs, for instance)? And would they find ways to be distributed by real stores and serious shops like JPC? or would that indeed be re-sellers and ebay?

I don't see that romanticism v. mysticism thing either ... I mean doesn't it boil down to love anyway? If mysticism or whatever religious or spiritual thing remains theoretical or ideological, I don't need it at all, I look at it and throw it in the garbage can (the one on top of which Dizzy wrote "A Night in Tunisia", I bet) ... when it's real, gets into life and down to earth, isn't love what it's all about? And doesn't love come in different shapes and colours? Whoever the "me and you" are, it's the essence. Why separate and divide when it belongs together? Does that sound like I'm a darn mysticist? Well, so be it

And they would be sold in local shops, too, via official channels? As for smells .... the book smells just like the Toscanini one does (and that one I'd bought locally here ... it had been standing around (sealed) in the shop for a few months before I did. So no, I guess it smells "new" but not like "just printed".

Are you serious? I saw it in a local store, had a chat with one of the guys there whose face brightened up when he told me: "Yes, they re-printed it in February!" (I was there a couple of weeks back) and then said the original edition had been gone pretty fast and he guessed this re-print would sell out pretty fast as well. If it's a counterfeit, it's brilliantly produced - totally comparable to any other similar Sony/Popmarket set using these "thicker" cardboard cases. It's made in the EU (or so it says) and amazon.com does not seem to sell it, but that's not so rare, after all (also Sony produces all their recent sets in Poland ... doesn't specify so on this one, but as I said, it carries the 2010 info - no changes whatsoever, I assume, to the original/first run. Also, of course it was printed recently ... how do you think this works? "Say, let's produce 200'000 of this, deliver the first 20'000 to the stores and keep the rest until the end of the world! Maybe, only maybe, we will sell a few thousand more four years later, but only maybe, remember?" - sounds like a great plan

I'm not sure that's all there is ... I see how you (and many others) arrive at that point, but I'm not convinced the story ends there.

Universal Music Italia box sets

Not sure at all, but might not the Verve Master Editions - where they exist with Brownie and Billie - be more to your taste? With the Evans, there's so much good stuff in the box that's impossible to finde otherwise, it really is a no-brainer if you don't have the ol' rusty one. -
It's not exactly cheap, but still I guess it's a bargain ... the Jascha Heifetz Album Collection is back since February: Best price currently: http://www.amazon.de/Complete-Album-Collection-Jascha-Heifetz/dp/B00467EKKO/ http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Jascha-Heifetz-The-Complete-Album-Collection/hnum/1140039 Just got mine from the later vendor (since I know they know how to pack heavy stuff - got the Rubinstein box from them, too, the Furtwängler coffin as well, all arrived in perfect shape).

Just got the 2013 reissue of "Chronicle" (not sure if it really came out last year, don't think so, but that's what it says). As expected, it has the full boklet - obviously CD-sized only, but still ... as usual with these Fantasy boxes, some credits, then a list of all (?) musicians, followed by four pages each of tracklisting and line-ups, dates etc (incl. a note by OK, the producer), followed by a double-page song index. Then we get Dan Morgenstern's essay and his session notes, too. I'd say 60 pages in all, some b/w photos in okay-ish quality (not great, but well, what do you expect, it's cheap after all). from the box's bottom (it has a bottom in which you put the eight discs and the booklet and then a top to close it, pretty sturdy cardboard and tight enough that the bottom part holding the contents shouldn't fall out, I hope): (P) 1987 © 2013 Concord Music Group, Inc. 100 N. Crescent Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. Made in the EU. LC 15025. 0888072342309 Whatever ... I'm glad to have it, although most of the sessions herein I've bought three times by now ... -
Also there are rough spots by Trane on the Miles sessions ... he was making GIANT strides in the shortest of times back then ... I think his playing on the album with Tadd Dameron is a first high-water mark (inlcuding some gorgeous slow playing!). By 1957 he was with Monk and that seems to have helped him big time - and I guess one can hear that in the Prestige albums of that time.

They should also do the fabulous "Ellerine" by Ellerine Harding, while they're at it - plenty of goodies in the Mainstream catalogue!

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
discs 7-11 (starting the the Dex/Jug sessions) -
I heard "Still Warm" in the late 90s and found it totally horrible - couldn't even get so far as to listen to the actual music, the sonics stopped me from doing so - no chance. (And I like Sco good enough, have almost all of his Blue Notes and some of his Verve discs, too.)

Well yes, the Cobham albums I do have. They're indeed pretty good ...

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Got to really crack the Crusaders box open again soon, too! Some very good stuff in there! Mines now on its way, glad to say. Along with a Zeitlin, Handy, George Wein, Herman Columbia and a few of the vinyls.. Crossing my fingers that all goes well - as it did with my order (tracking was slow, just in case ... only three days or so after Mosaic sent me the confirmation could I see anything under the link provided - but once it was actually under way, it took a mere three or four days to arrive!) -
Cheers mate! Just what I thought while browsing that list ...

Very cool, hadn't yet seen the new site :tup Lots of downloading to do ... but hardly any time for dedicated listening in the months ahead, alas

Griffin on the opener of "The Congregation", Eddie who? on the opener of that Funk Project album on Enja* - two perennial favourites in this house ... and indeed lots of Adderley! (eddie-t: this here)

Conglubbtion, Conflabbergastion ... not sure what those mean though, but Cornucopiation hardly is much better (fuller though, maybe, unless constipation kicks in, that is) - beat that conundrum -

That one may be the best Zoot Sims on record, I think. I've heard a lot of Zoot over the years and have gotten kind of..."blase" about hearing him these days, even the really good stuff, but this one made me stop and listen, involuntarily. When they talk about Zoot being a true jammer, this is what they mean. The dude is unfettered, unenclosed, and unstoppable, and all with good cause. That's a fitting description indeed! Got to send another round of warm thankyous brownie's way for this! -

a few more ... first of these is better, I find, second goes more towards groovy stuff - but ultimately, both are great: these belong in every household: the final one from the late great Reel Recordings label: if you only want the jazzy stuff, get Vol. 3: -

also this one (though I'm not sure of overlap): a classic: classic stuff: some weird sh*t and some rarities: classic? maybe ... classical? not quite, but: lotsa classics and then some: blastin' fun: some rare sh*t: in addition - too lazy to look for more covers ... three Vols. of Continental sessions and one of Wax sessions on Storyville, several great ones on Hep (2 vols. of Sounds of Harlem, NY Jazz Combos, They All Had Rhythm and Groovin' in L.A. ...) -
