  1. I recently got it, even though I have all the OJCs and the Savoy 2CD set and the Verve Elite Edition CD... call me crazy, but the early Savoy sessions are fabulous and I wanted to have them for real. This set made me doubt that OK ever intended to release and "early" Savoy set, since it would have been one of those 2CD sets with 90 minutes of music or so... (and OK was outspoken about that in a few of those ca. 2000 Savoy digipack reissues, where he said that since 1,5 CD sets didn't exist, he'd trimmed the selection down to 80 minutes... he did so with the Fats Navarro disc, for instance, or was it the Dexter Gordon?). Also, there was an incomplete session on the "Last Savoy" release, with just three tracks being on it. No point in doing that and making the "First Savoy" set even shorter! Just a lot of hot air there, from the git-go, I guess! The Fresh Sound is a nice package, with two regular jewel-case-sized 2CD sets and a booklet that reprints all the original liners, but alas adds nothing new (I guess paying a writer would have been over the top of their, ahem "budget"...). The two OJCs that are included there (plus one track from a third, I think?) together amount to only about 70 minutes of music... they'd have made a good Fantasy twofer, too, but hey, I'm not complaining! Main thing is: all of the music is great, you get Lateef exploring his first "eastern" sounds there, though alas there's no oboe yet... but his tenor playing is absolutely gorgeous! And the Verve album, in case you don't have it, is a lost jewel, in my opinion!
  2. I can't remember any disappointments (at least nothing worse than maybe mild disappointments...), but it's been a while that I played it. Which sessions do you mean? The Brick Fleagle rehearsal band disc?
  3. Played this one last night - very fine! Jabbo Smith - 1929-1939 (Classics) I see there's a Retrieval disc with two more 1929 tracks, but otherwise the same music. The 1939 session added on the Classics (and not on the Retrieval) is nice enough, but not four essential tracks, so I guess the Retrieval is the better bet, but since I've got the Classics disc at a used store, I won't complain... Punchy blowing by Jabbo Smith and some nice clarinet (and alto and tenor) by Omer Simeon! Seems these sides were kind of an attempt to cash in on the Hot Fives' success, but that didn't work out, or so says Mr. Schenker in his liner notes. Also he mentions that Jabbo was viewed as the Dizzy of his time, and there's certainly some dazzling trumpet playing to be found here! Here's the f/b covers of the Retrieval: btw, still waiting for the package with all those American Music CDs to arrive...
  4. Of course, so can I!
  5. Eeny meeny miny mo Please sit down it's time to go
  6. eeny meeny miny moe...
  7. Ah, I see... that makes more sense! I thought "kept the name" meant she kept her birthname... There's an entry for Gilbert Rovère (as Bibi Rovère) on French wiki: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibi_Rovère
  8. Yup, merry christmas to you all... eat much, drink more, have healthy good fights with your family, enjoy your turducken etc etc
  9. Interesting... so she was called Rovère and by chance married another Rovère? But Paul was Gilbert's (Bibi's) brother, right? There's not even a wiki entry on him, and the Loustal Barney Wilen site spells him without the accent!
  10. And probably she's right, ain't she? Kind of in the same boat here... if I don't explicitly ask for something, I won't get any music, and this year I didn't ask for anything... but getting music at any other time than x-mas or birthday (and I assume a gift on Dec. 23rd isn't an x-mas gift? Or just a "sort of"?) is quite impossible to imagine...
  11. The Yuri Gagarin of psychedelic guitar? r.i.p. - will spin some Janis Joplin these days...
  12. The box arrived yesterday, and of course I had to pay some custom fees/VAT and all... but gee, it looks great! From the "classically designed" boxes, it might indeed be the most beautiful one I've seen (contenders, though not "classically designed", would be the Ayler box, the Charley Patton box, the Ray Charles box). Maybe the Ellington Centennial would be similarly fine if you could open its book without being afraid it falls apart (mine hasn't so far). I have a quick look at the booklet, and it's great, with lots of fine photos - was that the sister or wife of [one of the] Rovère and was Chet romantically involved with her? There's also an attempt to re-create the diary of Chet's months in Europe, and it's all in French and English, very nice!
  13. Will have to so some further exploring here... just got "Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening" yesterday, and it's great! Other than that, my Tippett(s) collection is mostly radio broadcasts, and the FMP "Mujician I/II", which is one of the finest solo piano discs I've heard!
  14. Sad news. Though to be honest, she's another one I wasn't even aware of her still being around Will play that Lateef Savoy session later one, it's on top of the listening pile anyway.
  15. Hm, very weird interview... I get the impression it's fabricated - many all-too-general statements, it seems like either Fuller just didn't answer the questions, or they just had a chat and the interviewer later made up some questions to put into the transcript. Also sorry to say, but the language is pretty... "holprig" I'd say in german. Anyway, it's great that Fuller's still going strong, and I wish him all the best and that he can go on for as long as he wants to!
  16. Those two are on their way now!
  17. I don't have the Jasmine/Progress stuff yet (aren't there two Dizzy Reece discs?), but the Duke Jordan album is indeed great (and also the place I first heard Reece). There's however another one that should not be overlooked for sure! Asia Minor (Prestige/OJCCD) Line-up: Dizzy Reece, Cecil Payne, Joe Farrell, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Charlie Persip
  18. There's also some electric piano on at least one of the Basie/Peterson Pablo discs, they both play electric piano (one at the time).

  20. Ah well... the only "payback" from my blog is that I can change in my "rapidpoints" for a premium every once in a while... this time it was a 50€ amazon thingie and I went with amazon.de, which offers the Baker box for a pretty good prize. I'm not sure I'd have gotten it otherwise...
  21. I eat burgers in pubs... but I am a bürger, autrement dit, un citoyen
  22. waiting for one of these suckers to arrive at my place... had some credit w/amazon and it cost me 14€
  23. got the disc yesterday and gave it a spin late last night... very good!
  24. About the PMs: In IE7, there's no "subject" line, just a "to" and "additional recipients" line, and then the text box. So no PMs can be sent, it just produces an error because a subject has to be included... Again, I'm not using IE7 at my own will, rather at work it's just what I have, and I have no choice there, alas!
  25. hilarious story! earlier thread here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=56420
