  1. My references to track #s were relative to this new set, as listed on amazon. Thanks for clearing this (also to mjzee). I thought you were referring to a different edition of the complete RCA box!
  2. still waiting for my copy to be delivered... hope it will make it before the silly commercial season is over...
  3. Wow, that's great! Let's hope they bring back the goodies!
  4. So are there different versions of the box around? And as to the "debate" on alternate takes and outtakes etc: there's some pretty good stuff on those other albums (The Alternative Sonny Rollins"), including a "52nd Street Theme" clocking in at just under a quarter of an hour, and an almost 13 minute version of "Trav'lin Light"!
  5. I'm a bit confused about Sangrey's posts above...I have the 90s 6 CD box (black, similar design to the metal spine Miles boxes, but no metal spine). Disc 3 there is "Our Man in Jazz" (#1-3) and the three tracks from "3 for Jazz" (#4-6). "Don't Stop the Carnival" is on disc 1 (#7, #1-5 are "The Bridge", with #6 the sessions for "Our Man in Jazz" begin). "Brown Skin Girl" is on disc 2 (#4), and there's no alternate of "Yesterdays" listed. In fact, the only "Yesterdays" there is is from the "Sonny Meets Hawk" album (which is #1-6 on disc 4).
  6. I'm just pissed that Concord has deleted so many OJCs (though I bought 'em like crazy in the past few years), that BN is not bringing back some missing pieces (such as the Cliff Jordan album) and their older stuff (Meade Lux Lewis, Art Hodes...), and that Universal is only doing these silly Originals (although I keep buying them, even those that miss tracks that were included on earlier CD versions). For these losses, the European boots can't make up! Although I confess buying them (most recently Fresh Sound's fine Lateef 1957 box, two thirds of which I've had before of course, and Lonehill's John Graas and Illinois Jacquet series).
  7. It would be nice if they'd bring back some rarer stuff, wouldn't it? These can be found cheaply on Amazon Marketplace...
  8. Do post some about these in the other thread, once you've heard them! I think I have the Jelly Roll material (or some of it - on a Chrono Classics), but other than that the only one of these I have is the Bix...
  9. Yes, that's what I thought seeing the line-up for the Byrd track!
  10. sorry my scan turned out so bad... I couldn't upload it in better quality and only just noticed it's unreadable... 1. Ella Fitzgerald - Squeeze Me (Lou Levy, René Goldstein, J.C. Heard. July 8, 9, or 13, 1958) 2. Donald Byrd - When Your Lover Has Gone (Walter Davis, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor. July 11, 1958) 3. Sacha Distel - All for You (Martial Solal, Pierre Michelot, Kenny Clarke. July 12, 1958) 4. Christian Chevallier - Dream Time (Fernand Verstraete-t, Georges Barboteux-cor, William Boucaya, Hubert Rostaing, Armand Miginani, Jo Hrasko-sax, Pierre Cullaz-g, Michelot-b, Christian Garros-d. July 12, 1958) 5. Martial Solal - Special Club (Michelot, Clarke. July 12, 1958) 6. Stan Getz - East of the Sun (Solal, Michelot, Clarke. July 12, 1958) the disc clocks in at 23 or 24 minutes, so all titles are between 2:40 and 5 minutes.
  11. I've got a 2 year subscription for my birthday this April... I can't keep up reading it all, but I think it's quite a bit more interesting than any other jazz publication I can find at news shops here (including Downbeat of course). They cover quite a broad spectrum of jazz, and every now and then, they have these "Dossiers" (or had? Not sure they had one since the merger with Jazzman) with lots of photographs. The disc seems to be all music that's NOT on the official 2CD set (which I still need to buy), so it's very welcome! And plenty of Solal, too!
  12. I was always hoping for both a Giuffre and a Konitz Verve Mosaic - but I guess that will never happen, as so much of the music was released on Lonehill, Gamit etc. The O'Day/Giuffre session was in the O'Day Mosaic, so including it in a Select would be against the usual Mosaic policy... but that might be a pretty nice Select, indeed! The Ellis meets Giuffre is mighty fine, too!
  13. just what I thought! another one that went unjustly neglected: I heard that his ad-libbing on "Regina Coeli" was pretty jazzy... comparable to Coltrane on "Interstellar Space"
  14. Ronnell Bright Ann Ronell Princess Anne
  15. That's indeed a nice one! Found it used a while ago... any of these jams with Budd Johnson turning up seem to be good! MG, that Milt Jackson looks interesting! These two are great as well: Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Teddy Edwards (tenor saxophone); Cedar Walton (piano); Ray Brown (acoustic bass); Billy Higgins (drums) Recorded at Kosei Nenkin Hall, Tokyo, Japan on March 22 & 23, 1976
  16. Me too (from amazon.com, most likely their last copy of the set). Whew! Yeah, big relief! And I'm of course excited to finally get to hear "Soundin' Off", too!
  17. amazon.de (and since a few months also amazon.fr) offer free shipping for orders totalling 20€ or more (after VAT calculations). So I always attempt to create orders of a value between roughly 20 and 35€, as they'll be shipped without charges AND cheap enough to come through without custom taxes and fees. That's rather difficult with box sets and overseas orders though, as the shipping usually is so steep that it makes no sense to order just one or two discs... Anyway, I guess Amazon is offering that since they have no Swiss site.
  18. Harry Longabaugh Bill Loughborough Edward Low
  19. I'll do so... I'll also upgrade "Workingman's Dead" eventually, which I just played on the ipod on the way to work - it might be my favourite right now! I love the simpler approach they take, yet with some of the guitar madness shining through here and there, and some good funky drumming, too... and I'm a sucker for the steel guitar... (I also recently got the three first Emmylou Harris albums, love 'em!)
  20. The new edition of French "Jazz Magazine/Jazzman" (they merged a few months ago) has a disc with a few unreleased tracks! ha, since posts created within a short time are merged into one post, both attachments (more than 100KB) are in one post now! funny!
  21. 23.50€ for me, free shipping! Thanks a lot, just ordered one! 23.50? How did that happen? Are you sure you didn't order the old 2CD edition? Nah, that's because they take off the German VAT (and I think add the Swiss one, which is about 10% lower). This is nice now and then, as this will be cheap enough to slip through the customs without additional tax, but believe me, this is the exception!
  22. John Coltrane! Maybe they could inject some of his stem cells to Kenny G or some such?
  23. I recently bought a few Basie Pablo albums, the "First Time" and "Second Time" trios, jams and big bands, as well as several of the Basie/Peterson collaborations. Some very nice stuff there! One of the outstanding among them is "Basie Get Together" with Budd Johnson!
  24. 23.50€ for me, free shipping! Thanks a lot, just ordered one!
  25. bought some of the 2001 Rhino remasters at the used store yesterday: The Grateful Dead Anthem of the Sun Aoxomoxoa Live/Dead American Beauty Three of those I just bought in the old versions, ain't that crazy? Anyway, they look great and they contain quite some bonus material (except for Live/Dead, which I nevertheless upgraded). Now it seems like I'll need to upgrade Workingman's Dead, too... same for History of the Grateful Dead Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice)... Gee, someone could have told me not to buy these old CDs in the first place
