  1. I guess quarterly would be fine, so you can just skip if you're in a bad situation, and if three months later it looks better, you can pay some - I guess it's not bad intention that keeps many of us from donating something... so regular reminders wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd certainly not pay something quarterly, but it wouldn't bother me to see a donation pop-up or banner or just one of those fixed (what's the word for that again?) topics somewhere (maybe even on top of all parts of the forum for say, one week).
  2. The other one is much better, time to get it now, I'd say!

(800)551-5299 customerservice@concordmusicgroup.com so I guess it's 20$ for each 100$ worth that you order (I had twice as many things in my basket and shipping was 80$... then I started cleaning it out and just when I got below 200, it went down to 40... maybe it's just 40 and 80, no 60 in between, but I wouldn't know... it's way too much, but then Mosaic is almost as bad, and with the coupon code you get some of it back, and also with the cheap prices and cheap exchange rate for $, it ain't all that bad...
  4. Oh, I knew I forgot one favourite... there it is! Great one! (Again arranged by Paich, I think)
  5. There's been some talk about Fantasy recommendations since Concord is having a big sal (all titles reduced, the tenth disc for free, plus if you enter some coupon-code, you get some more percent off... free shipping in the US, horrendous Fedex rates abroad... but fast delivery for sure!) So I just got my big package today, including the two Garland Rediscovered Masters, Teddy Edwards' "It's All Right", Barry Harris' "Luminescence!", Dizzy Reece's "Asia Minor", to name just a few of the OOP titles that are part of the sale (I assume as long as supplies last... it seems they "found" additional stock of many titles that were assumed to be gone for good... also worth mentioning the two Gil Mellés, all the Gigi Gryces, Woody Shaw's "Song of Songs"). Anyway, among the first discs I played this afternoon are the two fine albums by Jerome Richardson, who's much more than just a utility player and session man! I was aware of that before, but never had a chance to really check it out... sure, he appears here and there, turning in fine playing on flute or tenor, but these two albums still are worth a special recommendation. Midnight Oil (New Jazz 8205 / OJCCD 1815-2) with Jimmy Cleveland, Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones, Joe Benjamin and Charlie Persip, rec. by RVG, 1958-10-10 Richardson sticks to flute here, except for the opening track on which he plays meaty tenor. The flute/trombone frontline (with guitar) is mighty nice, not a combination heard too often (one notable team to do it was J.J. Johnson/Bobby Jaspar on the former's Columbia dates, part of the great Mosaic box). They do three originals by the leader (side a), a nice arrangement of "Caravan", plus an Artie Shaw tune ("Lyric") (side b). Roamin' with Richardson (New Jazz 8226 / OJCCD 1849-2) with Richard Wyands, George Tucker, Charlie Persip, rec. by RVG, 1959-10-21 Here we get the opportunity to hear Richardson on baritone, and he does great! On "Poinciana" he's on flute, he also plays tenor again, but the baritone playing is outstanding! The band with Wyands is great - this musician first caught my ear on the Eric Dolphy Prestige box, and I ever since enjoyed his contribution to all the albums he appears on as a sideman - I'd love to hear some trio stuff form him from those days, but as far as I know, there's nothing around. George Tucker and Charlie Persip, too, are fine individalists, and with Richardson the only horn, this is a mighty fine group! I can heartily recommend both discs! I assume it would be worth grabbing them quick, they might fetch incredible prices on Amazon marketplace (I didn't check, though). Oh, and both have fine cover photos, by Esmond Edwards (who supervised both dates), and by one Ben Robles (Midnight Oil).
  6. Not much anti-Torme sentiment from me... favourites: the two albums with Marty Paich Dek-Tette for Bethlehem (Lulu's Back in Town, Sings Fred Astaire), the mentioned Swings Shubert Alley, and also the cheesy south of the border album "Olé Torme"... I'm a sucker for that stuff! The rest of the Bethlehem material isn't bad either... two albums from the same live gig at the Crescendo, plus a crooner album, plus the ambitious California Suite. The Paich albums are the best, though... some great solos from the band on the Lulu album, too (and what a cool song that is, anyway!)
  7. this just to proof we're not just talking about paying... even though each of us may contribute just a bit, it might end up quite something if many of us do contribute, as has been stated before by others... 50 x 30$ would be quite a nice sum, in fact... (I don't get any percentage of it, just to make sure... wouldn't complain about that, though...)
  8. just sent in 30$ - donation time, folks! too long I haven't donated anything... I guess this brings me up to having donated for the first two or three years...
  9. Hey, I haven't read this all through yet, but I'd certainly be willing to pay *if* it helps/changes anything... but we'd have to hear from Jim first, maybe he just feels like not going through that hassle with all of us any longer? Anyway, I've been here from the start, I've enjoyed it a lot for quite some time, there have been better and worse times, and I think recently it was one of the later periods, rather than a great one, but still... I'd feel kind of homeless in the cybersphere if this forum was to disappear (would there be at least a way to store it somewhere, inactively, just so all the info and knowledge was still around? I see that the save-topic function is not working for long topics, it just saves the first posts and cuts off the rest... It would be too bad to see it all go!) I've made friends here with some very kind persons, have been able to stay at brownie's in Paris, have met mikeweil, rockefeller center, jug21, Tom Storer and D.D. (missing in action) in person and would look forward to meet more of you yurpeens in person - if I ever cross the channel, I certainly have to hook up with his bobness, misters Shelton, Fenton and the magniloquent one somehow... also some of the Italians like porcy & eloe, and more of the Frenchmen like recent member aparxa and more of those German chaps like Niko and neveronanyday etc. would be cool to meet in person, and there are many others living much farther away that I'd like to meet in person, too, of course! If any of you happens to drop by or stopover in Zurich (Switzerland, not Texas, Montana, North Carolina, or wherever), let me know and we'll have a bunch of beers together (wine & dine for brownie, that is!) Anyway, I can be contacted at: flurin[dot]casura[at]bluewin[dot]ch You can also check out my blog and get in touch with me over there: http://ubu-space.blogspot.com As for subscriptions, I'd be all for it... maybe it could be done some way to also allow in newbies, like, get the first month for free, get 1 month for 5$, three for 12$, a year for 30$ or something like that, and anyone could proceed as he felt like, those wanting to pay more could just do quarterly subscriptions all of the time, or pay 50$ for one year etc. I'm sure we could raise enough funds that way! And count me in among those who *usually* don't see much need for moderators, but sometimes would be happy with some *moderation* - that wouldn't get much better if we had more moderators around here, though, I'm afraid...
  10. Thanks again... I guess I'll get "Sextet" and possibly "Ensemble", too, then... The covers are indeed good, but I'd be just as happy to have them in a twofer with one of the covers somewhere in the booklet or on the back or inside the tray or wherever it would fit...
  11. or as an easily available alternative, there's this 2CD set by Fresh Sound: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/search-ma...st_id=2423#4418 The first album is the Bob Gordon session (bonus on the Montrose BN/Pacific CD), the second is the main session by Montrose from teh BN/Pacific CD, and the third is the Atlantic session from the Koch CD. Mighty fine music! (I have the BN & Koch CDs, in case anyone cares.)
  12. You (and anyone who enjoys the fine Montrose disc!) should check out this one, too, while it's still around: CDuniverse via Org-link (for less than 12 bucks it's yours!)
  13. Could you supply any details on this Jazzbo? I guess I'd just assumed this was nothing but a compilation of stuff that had already appeared in the previous volumes of the series. I'd be interested to have some precise info about that, too - just in case someone has it ready to post.
  14. http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-6221226.html
  15. And they were catering the LP fetishists again with these reissues... and what about the missing material from "The Very Best of Chet Baker Sings"? Was that the original "Chet Baker Sings" album which is entierly on "Very Best of Sings" and is still around in its old CD incarnation? Why wasn't there a new reissue of that material? And what about the West Coast Classics quartet material from 53/54? Why the hell didn't they just do something like two 2CD sets, compiling all the quartet and all the larger group stuff? And where is the strings date from "Grey December"? Has it gone lost from the new reissues? And the tracks with overdubbed saxes from "Young Chet" have gone lost, too? Anyway, thanks for clearing that one issue, Gokhan, as I'm posting from work I wasn't able to double check anything...
  16. So the cheapest solution (getting the "Sextet" disc only) would be the best...
  17. The 1st Gymnopédie is probably the classical piece recorded the second most often by jazz musicians - I remember a radio feature on German local hr radio listing about 20 versions by jazz and pop musicians. Hubert Laws recorded this on the CTI album "In The Beginning"; Blood, Sweat & Tears on their 2nd self-tiltled LP. Jacques Loussier made a whole CD of Satie Pieces, as did the Vienna Art Orchestra ("The Minimalism of Erik Satie"). which ("Minimalism") is one of the most special ever adaptions of classical material! yup, got that one, too... And here's another very good one, featuring Johnny Griffin on some tracks: The first of the Hubert Laws albums I've heard... my dad has (had? I once lent it to someone, not sure I ever got it back... not that big a loss anyway) got that one. Also he has (had? same someone...) another kitschy overproduced LP of Laws doing... Ravel's "Bolero", of course... Jacky Terrasson also did the Bolero (not sure if on officially released albums).
  18. Meaning: "Sings & Plays", "Sextet", "Ensemble" and "Big Band". I have the "Very Best of Chet Bakers Sings" album which as far as I know contains all that's on "Sings & Plays", I have "Grey December", which contains the "Ensemble" (I think?) tracks, and I have the old "Big Band" CD. So I miss but the music from "Sextet", right? This re-packing of previously available stuff is so annyoing, and this is one particularly annoying case, thank you Blue Note! My question is: is it worth upgrading the releases I have by getting the new releases? I have almost all of the old US CDs, also "& Crew", "Young Chet", "Baker/Freeman" (from 1956) and "Baker/Freeman" (West Coast Classics, from 1953/54), and the 2CD set with Getz taking Mulligan's place in the later's quartet... the dates with Art Pepper I have on the Art Pepper Mosaic - never checked if there are non-Pepper tracks added on the discs that aren't part of hte Mosaic 3LP set. Anyway, is there a way to get the Sextet, Ensemble & Big Band material in a smart 2CD package, thanks to our Spanish friends or anyone else? What is the route others took? Shall I just get the "Sextet" disc as long as it's still around, and stay with the old CDs I have otherwise? (By the way, I had a 10 inch LP of the "Sextet" once, but just borrowed from a friend's father... nice stuff, for sure!) Oh, and it's possible I'm mixing up "Sextet" and "Ensemble"... with "Sextet" I mean the dates with Bud Shank, with "Ensemble" the Bokhanal-dates with Jack Montrose (almost typed JR...) - I think that's correct, but correct me if I'm wrong.
  19. Yusef Lateef does "Goin' Home" (from some Dvorak thingie) on this great album: On this great one, there's Satie's "First Gymnopédie": And the "Volga Rhythm Song" on 'teef's "Jazz 'round the World" is another take-off from a classical (originally folk? I don't know) theme. Westbrook/Rossini is fine, btw. I got one of the Hat Hut CDs (the 2CD set, I think that's the live recording, the other being a studio production?). Enrico Rava does "Carmen": now this is *not* jazz, but John Surman and Barry Guy are involved in this fascinating disc dedicated to compositions/songs by John Dowland: Hilliard's John Potter is doing the singing, Guy's wife Maya Homburger is on baroque violin, and Stephen Stubbs on lute. These songs would be a nice base for some kind of lyrical appropriation, I'm sure.
  20. Yeah, but it's still a bit weid. The Baker material is Barclay material, some Barclay material was part of the series, even one of the Baker albums was... it's just not the same reissue crew, I assume?
  21. Yes, that's a bit how it seems to me, Allen. All the better he's not (yet?) hyped up all that much... But then most of the younger tenors on the scene haven't gotten to a point where they have found a real personality... (thinking of all those good guys like Redman, Javon Jackson, Speed, Potter, Seamus Blake, whoever... Mark Turner stands out somewhat, but his stuff with Rosenwinkel is so heady, it gets boring after a while... his ballads album is alright, though... nice to hear some Warne Marsh in between all those Coltrane/Rollins guys...)
  22. So there's not much more music really than the old four discs contained? They could have done better than spreading it onto more CDs, but I guess they think we'll pay more like this? I assume it will rather lead to them selling less... 100€ for an 8CD box is way too much anyway (except maybe for the Ayler box or something similarly incredible)!
  23. from what i have seen, that box, to be released on 04/12/07, only includes the 55-56 Barclay sessions already reissued in different forms. so how come it takes up 8 full CDs? easy, one CD per session with some only featuring 3 or 4 tracks and uncountable alt takes on others. now that's a brilliant marketing concept! i'm only missing vol. 3 ('56 sessions), which i have as a copy and would like to have as a regular release. vol. 4 i'm not interested in. i had been waiting for many years for the full barclay sessions to be reissued to make up for that gap ... but not in this way. it will cost over 100 € . sure, nice booklet and pics but loads of duplication. and the story of those Paris days has been told lots of times. i doubt there's much (if any) new info in there. and it seems not even the duos with Caterina Valente are on the box, though I don't know for whom they were recorded (not Barclay for sure, but probably some label now under the Universal umbrella). i think i'll stick to my CDR. Look here for more info: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36969 I'm tempted but will definitely not get it all too soon... The Barclay sessions were available on foru discs, which already contained quite some alternate takes. I managed to find three of them (the elusive one that went OOP much earlier than the rest was Vol. 2, I think, I got a CDR thanks to a kind soul from this board - and half of it is on the JinP quartet disc, too). Anyway, I guess it's smarter to just live on with these, but then, as usual with nice box sets, I'm tempted as I said...
  24. Yes, Escofferey is pretty good! I've only heard him live once, with the Mingus Big Band, but he was great there! Then I heard radio broadcasts with that very good Ben Riley Monk band, and with the Mingus Dynasty (a mid-size off-shot of the Mingus BB). I'd say he's a solid player worth watching.
  25. Played some of the Roy Eldridge set on Sunday, including the fabulous three-trumpet jams with Dizzy and Sweets
