Hm, I love this string of albums, hard to pick a favourite... but I never really got into "Soulville" so far. It was the last of these (with only "Sweets" being later, I only just got that a few months ago), and it's the one I like the least. I love "Hawk encounters Webster", but then again that was the first of all of these I've heard... anyway, the two 2CD sets are fantastic as well! The Strayhorn cuts on the strings twofer... great music! "King of Tenors" I found too short, too sketchy... will have to spin it again soon. The collaboration with Mulligan is great, that one I love, and Rowles plays quite a part in that!

I have never fully gotten into Schlippenbach... so I felt like the two Intakt discs might be too much for me. Seems like that might indeed be true, then. No idea about "Smoke", I found my copy used years ago. It's worth looking, though!

I don't have much Schlippenbach, but this one is great: I also was lucky enough to see his Monk programme "Monk's Casino" with the band Die Enttäuschung - he jumped the bandwagon, I think, they had their Monk act and he joined in and his name is the biggest... though Axel Dörner and Rudi Mahall on trumpet and bass clarinet, respectively, were much more interesting. I really should get some more of his albums!

I'll catch Lake (with Trio 3 and Irene Schweizer) again on Saturday... hoping they'll all have a better night then! I've heard other things with Lake, Chuck (live material mostly), though I confess not knowing him very well... anyway, one has to make choices necessarily, I don't have nearly as much money and time as I'd need to check out all that I could and actually would like to check out, and if a first live encounter is so very weak, that's just bad luck, but it might indeed steer me off in another direction...of course I might end up hearing someone again after a couple of years and have a totally different opinion, but I allow myself to have an opinion - not acting as if I knew the whole discography, of course, unless I do (and I never said I would with Lake).

I must have missed this thread last time around... i first heard Turrentine on Jimmy Smith's great "Back at the Chicken Shack" (which was among my first 20 or so jazz CDs and I still love it today, still among my 3-4 favourite Smith albums). I never warmed as much to "Midnight Special" and don't get into "Prayer Meeting" to this day... But I picked up a few other Turrentine albums, most notably the 2CD set from Minton's, which I love! I still remember, I bought it in Athens (Greece, not Georgia, just in case), while there in highschool... (also bought "Whims of Chambers" there). Then I guess next I heard him on "Midnight Special" by Kenny Burrell - fantastic moody album! The album with the Three Sounds I used to love, but I played it once or twice too often and rarely spin it nowadays. I've got a few more by now, and my favourites, next to the Minton's, include the three albums with Horace Parlan (one pictured above, the other two are part of the Parlan Mosaic). "Hustlin'" and some others I have with Shirley Scott are excellent, too ("Queen of the Organ" on Impulse and one of the Scott Legends of Acid Jazz on Prestige).

Funny story, Chuck! He was in a great mood last night, obviously! He was scheduled to play for 75 minutes. He did so, then got a standing ovation, sat down for another 30 minutes, got a second standing ovation, and played a third set for yet 20 minutes more. It was a beautiful concert, with him largely staying away from his in-the-bag groove stuff. Very soft playing - I loved it! It took a while to take off, or rather for me to get into it, but once I was in, it was great!

Yes, a quick glance showed they have both Gil Mellé discs and most or all of the Gigi Gryce discs - those are supposed to be OOP for quite some time by now!

I think that Ron has it right, and that some people see rare OOP titles listed by Caiman and then get ticked off when they don't show up when the reality is that the listing should be taken with a grain of salt. Take the plunge, hope you get a shipping confirmation in a week or so or else cancel. Its not that difficult. But that still doesn't justify their re-listing of items they'll never get!

That will be a very spiritual experience, for sure! Saw him two or three years ago, solo, and it was a great concert I've already seen him three times, first in solo (early/mid 90s), then in duo with Max Roach (around 2000, I think), and last with his trio (early 00s). The solo concert was by far the best, so I hope it will be good once more! I'll try and see Brötzmann (with Pliakas/Wertmüller) here in late November! Never saw him live, looking forward to doing so a lot, even more so with this particular trio!

I can see that. Still, what happened to me recently was that Caiman suddenly listed an item (on Amazon Marketplace UK as it were) which had previously not been available. Suddenly Caiman indicated it as "in stock" (which of course it wasn't, as they have no stock). So how do they suddenly decide that they will be able to get an item? In the end, it costed me a dollar because of the varying exchange rates so it was no big deal, but still... Yes, that's the point I criticise: why would they re-list items they should have never listed anyway? I guess they sell their stuff to earn money, so I don't really agree that there's no way they can control... after the Fantasy/Concord debacle, for instance, they could have simply stopped listing all those discs. And even more so, after the first time they had been ordered and they weren't able to deliver, they could just delete their listing for good, instead of re-listing stuff again. Quality control is the point... a site like ZVAB is the ideal, I assume. I recently ordered a book, and the first item I chose was already sold. Within two or three hours I got a mail (personal) from the selling book shop, apologising, explaining to me that the item had just sold before I ordered it. So I ordered it from another seller, my credit card was only charged once, from the seller that actually was able to deliver (well, as far as I'm aware, at least... I'll see when I get the bill).

I had a chance to hear another one of McGhee's comeback albums, "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" recently. The organ playing didn't strike me as *that* bad (see this earlier thread). It's mostly just a couple of songs for trumpet w/accompaniment, all songs short, McGhee in nice mellow mood, half of the songs McGhee's backed by Jimmy Jones (p), Ron Carter (b), Arthur Taylor (d) and on the other half by Phil Porter (org), Larry Ridley (b), Dave Bailey (d). And it has a nice cover!

So I'm not that naïve after all... or rather, the naïvete lies in assumeing caiman to play by the rules...

Yes, but in the case of said Woody Shaw disc, they deleted their offer and put it in again... so what should I believe? That they're lying? If so, Amazon should do something against what I'd consider an abuse. I guess I'm just naïve... anyway, it's not a good service they offer, at least not as far as I am concerned.

I think I've had one bad experience with them, but not nearly as bad as you describe I just got my money back after a while, no mails needed)... however, I stay away from them, too. And even if the'yre swiss, the shipping charge is the usual 6 euro for European marketplace orders, so there's no reason to prefer them to others, gladly!

Wouldn't that be because you ordered too many Funny Rats through them? nope only mainstreamish stuff, including recent discs they were unable to deliver...

Yes, probably it was bad luck on my side, but I can't afford their practice to just take the money first... I know all Amazon sellers do it that way, but it still sucks! Would be a lot nicer if these marketplace orders were being handled the same way normal amazon orders are: you pay once they fill in your order only. I wouldn't be nearly as outspoken about my negative experience with Caiman if that were the case.
