I need to put in a good word for Brönner's jazz chops - this guy is a great musician, really! I have not bought any of his discs, but I heard a concert of his on the radio which was terrific. Technically, he can do it all, but he's not at all a show off. He played with just guitarist Johan Leonhuvud (sp?) and Dieter Ilg on bass, and that concert was absolutely great! As I said, I have no clue what he does most of the time, but that concert alone convinced me of how good he was...

Benny Golson's "We Remember Clifford Group
king ubu replied to White Lightning's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw the group last night, was a fairly nice concert, but Golson was not that great, either. Brecker was too tough, hard, harsh, loud and high for my likings, and not really into the music with his heart, it seemed - merely doing his job, which was to shine... Claus Reichstaller was there for Henderson, and he was definitely the most convincing musician, doing "Once in a While" on the flugel, and that was definitely the most beautiful and most touching piece of the whole concert. Other than that they played the same tunes Barak mentioned: Set 1 was "Joy Spring", "Confirmation", "I Remember Clifford" and one more tune, set 2 was "Jordu", "Once in a While", "Take the A Train", "A Night in Tunisia", and "Now's the Time" as an outro - they don't seem to play encores on this tour. Besides Reichstaller I liked Al Foster a lot, and Mike LeDonne did some great things, too. Buster Williams, alas, had an ugly pick-up eighties bass-sound, but it seems it was all his equipment, so it's him who is to blame. Yuck. If he stayed down low it was ok, and of course he played great, but if he went toward the upper region of his instrument's range, it started sounding twanky ugly metallish... and you heard his fingers and the noise of the string just as loud as the actual tone of the bass. Anyway, it was worth seeing, for sure! -
Well, there have been three pretty lengthy Jaspar discs in the "Original Vogue Masters" series, all good. If there's nothing else (I don't know, and Brownie is on vacation, I think), it would fit, but somehow I think it's rather unlikely to happen, as most of those interested in Jaspar by now probably have those Vogue discs... would be a nice set, though, I'm sure about that!

I have some Palmetto discs and like them all, more or less (the Javon Jackson may be the least interesting one, for me): Larry Goldings - Moonbird Fred Hersch Trio - Live at the Village Vanguard Fred Hersch Trio - + 2 Andrew Hill - A Beautiful Day Andrew Hill - Dusk Javon Jackson - Easy Does It Rick Margitza - Memento Rick Margitza - Heart of Hearts Ted Nash - Still Evolved Greg Tardy - Abundance The Hills and the Tardy are probably my favourites from these.

very nice disc - here's the tunes: Escapade; Cheesecake; Warm Valley; Madeline; Just One of Those Things; Grant's Tune; High Modes; Break Through; It Could Happen to You; La Mesha. The band is Spaulding (as,fl), Richard Wyands (p), Ron McClure (b), Tony Reedus (d). -
Huh? You'll be in Basel, too? I'm not sure... and I cannot speak Viennese slang, either. -_- Skip the Basel gig, too: It's one of those 45 minute gigs on a kurdish festival, and it's in Liestal, not in Basel, I was told last night. Thanks for the info Mike! Liestal is not exactly a very nice place, I think, and to go there for such a short gig would not make much sense for me. But keep me posted about future "real" gigs!

yes. There are interesting bets to be won where you have to hit the thing just right with your index finger to crack the smaller piece off without blood squirting from your finger. Plus these caps come in handy if you are drinking beer during heavy rainfall. This sounds rather bovine to me... -_-

Then I beat you... they had an avant garde 50% off sale at the shop I bought the discs, and I paid around 30$ for all four of them! Full prize for the Malinga would have been around 17-18$. I've seen it go for $80 on eBay more than once, so we both beat out somebody! Wow! So I can consider that an investment... I am clueless as far as prizes for vinyls are concerned... I just sort of buy what I feel like buying for a prize that looks ok to me... (bought the Buck Clayton Mosaic there for quite some, but I guess it was not half as much as I would have to pay on Ebay...)

invite me for a train ticket? i can pay entrance and drinks myself, then... couw is next in line: been there, done that... Stunning image by Guy Le Querrec! A classic! Oh yes! I've known this photo for years, but only last week I found the Sclavis disc in a sale - terrific one! And nice to see it was left as short as it came out originally - no need for all those lengthy releases!

Btw: that phrase about Malinga being the sax player at Dollar Brand's side - that's a wrong translation from the Brambus site! The german version actually says something like: Malinga is kind of a pendant to Dollar Brand, only on sax, and earlier he worked with Brand (I guess that's *way* early, back in ZA in the early sixties?) The prize of 16$ includes shipping but they only accept VISA (or cash or eurochecks of money transfer).

Brambus is a small swiss label - I suppose the original label was swiss or german, too. Not much to be found on the internet about Malinga or the original label.

Thanks for that review... kind of a mixed bag, then. I should have gone to see Golson when he played that gig of which I had a tune on my BFT, back in 2000 or so... Henderson is another musician I'm not sure about... I saw him with the Mingus big band and he was weak, weakest of the bunch to be honest. Like, his first solo was more like him warming up his horn and chops. The second turn then was ok and pretty lyrical. But surrounded by the likes of Frank Lacy, Wayne Escofferey and Jaleel Shaw, and also his fellow trumpeters, Alex Sipiagin and Kenny Rampton, he looked pretty weak - biggest name, worst performance... (the concert all in all was terrific, though!) I guess I'll try and go to see Golson - might well be the last chance I get, alas. -

Barak, was the concert good? He'll play in Zurich on April 11, but this being some kind of all star package and a very negative review about their Burghausen concert in March make me a bit hesitant... On the other hand, he'll appear in a fairly small club and he's quite old and I never saw him before, so... -
Zany Katie Couric - A Network News Anchor?
king ubu replied to RonF's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well yes, and we've had anchor women on TV for years, and nothing's more normal than that... (but that 1971 *does* bug me! Even though I wasn't born then...) -
That tune was the first instance where I heard and dug Dolphy - an awesome performance! I got a cheapo disc pairing that one quartet track with some Eldridge/Flanagan and some of the large group Candid cuts. Made for a good entry into the world of Mingus - in medias res, so to say. That "Stormy Weather" is indeed to this day my favourite single Dolphy performance, I think!

Going from memory that disc did not contain unreleased Mingus (just doubled up two tunes available elsewhere), but it does add to the great Booker Little album. Candid Dolphy (info taken from the www, not double-checked with my own disc): 1. Re-Incarnation of a love Bird (take 1) 2. Stormy Weather (take 1) 3. T'aint Nobody's Business If I Do (take 3) 4. Body and Soul (take 2) 5. African Lady (take 4) 6. Quiet Please (take 1) 7. Moods in Free Time (take 5) 8. Zany Katie Couric - A Network News Anchor?
king ubu replied to RonF's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
So you still find it weird to have women reporting evening news on tv (and actually putting together, choosing topics etc. etc) - *without* a male colleague next to her and fully in charge? Sort of third world tv, no? Are women allowed to vote, too? (They are even allowed to vote in - dig that! - Switzerland since - and dig that!!! - 1971!) -
For Mingus I always thought this site did well enough: http://webusers.siba.fi/~eonttone/mingus/leader.html For the Cecil Taylor material (similar mess), there's this one: http://www.efi.group.shef.ac.uk/mtaylors.html The CT online sessionography says "more details forthcoming" but has no info so far.
