Just in case someone still needs "da shit" [<<="Arcana Major"]
  2. Is that one worth getting for the rest of what it includes, too? The Frémeaux looks good. Although I have almost nothing they did, I really like that label. Also they send a free catalogue each year... ubu
  3. No problem. The two cuts I heard are ok, but that's the kind of music you must have more to really judge... Drake played some various percussion instruments, it seems, before finally settling on drums. I hope they will broadcast this concert!
  4. Jim, I just caught up with this thread. Terrible news! I wish you and even more so Alison all the best. I'm not the one who has prayers to offer, but you'll be in my thoughts for sure, and I really hope this takes a good turn!
  5. A funny read, yes! I don't have the set (and don't plan to get it), just in case someone wonders. I'm not into Braxton very much (yet). And I guess I would rather start with other recordings... ubu
  6. I posted this in the "rat" already, and as I took the pains to type it up, I may as well post it here, too: Here's The Wire’s review of the recent 4CD Braxton box, as well as Leo Feigin’s reply. The review also covers Andrew Cyrille/Anthony Braxton’s “Duo Palindrome” discs on Intakt, and the hatOLOGY reissue of Max Roach/Anthony Braxton, “One in Two/Two in One”. I did not type up those parts (they follow what I did type up), as Feigin did only write about his own Braxton release. Now here comes Mr. Feigin’s reply: ubu (back from fighting for God and - what to call it? It's not God's own... - country)
  7. Email sent, thanks!
  8. Here's Hodes' other Candid release (don't have it, don't know it): ubu
  9. some real bluesy caucasian (real caucasian, I might add) piano...

Did you ever get a chance to hear this one? I just did for the first time and am very impressed. Just received this CD from CD Connection. Looks like they have more in stock (and don't forget this Cecil poetry disc as well). Just ordered it there, thanks! I added the new Andrew Hill Conn, in order to evade copy protection. Also they offer them for a rather nice price. ubu
  11. available for free download here. edit: sorry, that link does not work anymore! ubu link works again, so you'll finally get a chance... enjoy! ubu

Welcome! I can't give any insight as to my own opinion, as I don't have the Standards set. However, that statement about "standard repertoire" needing "very precise playing" I do find rather strange. Leo's letter, well... The point(s) he makes in his second paragraph don't work, but it's a funny read, of course! ubu
  13. Yes, that's the same Eddie Henderson. I came to know him (like most of us, I suppose) as a member of the Mwandishi sextet, and ever since liked his playing. Finally, I just got his "Sunburst" in some sale. No time to listen yet, though. When I saw him last year with the MingusBB I found him rather disappointing and unfocused. ubu
  14. Nice to see another thread dedicated to Schweizer (please, do correct the spelling in the title!). I still don't have any of her discs, except for the Chicago Piano Solo, which I love a lot (see the other thread). Heard an hour-long programme on Swiss radio dedicated to Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim, with Schweizer being invited to present him in an interview with some radio guy. Pretty interesting to get first-hand information from her, as the Brand-influence is quite easily discernable from her playing, I'd say. Schweizer performed this year's Willisau festival in trio with Hamid Drake and Fred Anderson. I only heard two cuts on the air, but I am looking forward to hopefully hearing more (in form of a radio broadcast on swiss radio). ubu

Upon request of D.D., I typed up The Wire’s review of the recent 4CD Braxton box, as well as Leo Feigin’s reply. The review also covers Andrew Cyrille/Anthony Braxton’s “Duo Palindrome” discs on Intakt, and the hatOLOGY reissue of Max Roach/Anthony Braxton, “One in Two/Two in One”. 16. How much music is there on the Slug's date? It's the only ESP I don't have in one or the other version. Only as much so it fits easy onto one CD? Or is there more? And who sends me a burn? ubu From the Fresh Sound web: This outstanding 66-minute release includes Albert Ayler's complete May 1, 1966 Slug's Saloon performance for the first time ever on one CD. But from Ayler pages: Also the Lonehill Jazz version of Slug?s is confusingly called Complete Live at Slug?s Saloon - it isn?t, it?s missing a track. (it's missing track "Initiation" 16.34).

Gokhan, I heard three or four tracks from Byron's Saalfelden 2004 concert on radio, and did mention how sloppy i found his playing in the New Releases section's "Ivey Divey"-dedicated thread. I really don't understand why he does that (supposing he COULD do better if only he WANTED). ubu

Accidentally, I met ubu today, and he implied that today might indeed beThe Funny Rat anniversary. Even more accidentally, November 7th is also an anniversary of what we, Soviet kids, were taught to call The Great October Socialist Revolution of 1917. To commemorate both of these historically important events, I will be listenig to some revolutionery Russian music - Golden Years of Soviet New Jazz Vol. I (Leo). Enjoy! I listened to most of the Koller disc on my way home on train, and I love it, thanks a lot! Won't have time for the other one till next weekend, though. ubu

Hey, I've been heavy drinking for two weeks (and will continue for another one) without any good reason...

    Funny Rat

Hey friends, I met D.D. again today, and he told me today was the one year anniversary of the funny rat. Time to open some of your favourite booze and join the virtual party! ubu
  21. Her latest effort. There's a thread about it in the New Releases forum. A great one! I hope Guy's new programme (which I saw live), "Oort-Entropy", will see an official release (there were radio broadcasts from two concerts in Switzerland, and as Intakt is a swiss label and collaborator of the two festivals, I have hope...) Now this is a great disc, if you can find it! It collects the best of several of Gruntz early albums, featuring many great musicians/soloists, among them a few famous americans, such as Elvin, Scofield, and Joe Henderson, as well as many top European artists (among them Concert Jazz Band co-founder Franco Ambrosetti). ubu
  22. The first band I though of was Barry Guy, then Mingus Big Band, then the Instabile fellows. I guess these three are my favourite big bands of late. Gruntz is good as well, as is the Vienna Art Orchestra (though their latest efforts are not as strong and individualist anymore, I think). Then there's Maria Schneider I have seen all of these bands live, except for Gruntz. Interesting to note that so many of these bands are either European (Guy, Instabile, VAO), or directed by Europeans (Gruntz) ubu
  23. I'm the one with the freakin' baritone sax... No jazz to be played here, no sir! They all officially *hate* jazz. Rather they play badly arranged cover versions of stoopid songs such as "Y.M.C.A." and other total crap. The worst stuff though is the ambitious dutch (no japanese this time, thank God!) stuff.
