I have both the duo hatOLOGY's with Bennink, not heard the Melford yet, but I think "Dissonant Characters" is very good. Also I mentioned that Brötz/Mengelberg/Bennink trio disc I picked up on FMP, "Three Points and a Mountain...Plus" - some great stuff on it. Steve - stick around here!

Got a DVD called "Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis: Great Performances". Here's what it includes: #1-3: Jammin' The Blues (Mili) #4: Hot House (Bird & Diz) #5-9: JATP (Mili) #10-13: The Sound of Miles Davis (Smight) ("The Sound of Jazz") #14-17: bonus tracks from Jammin' the Blues. Now first: I have been very very moved, and deeply impressed. Fantastic to see Prez and all the others! Wow! My question is: is the listing above exactly what Disc 1 of the 2DVD set includes? And if so, can someone confirm that item #10 on this list (Dusty Groove) has exactly what is on the second DVD of the 2 DVD set? The store where I bought the "Great Performances" DVD has #10 from the list, but not the 2DVD set, yet if the two single DVDs don't have it all I might go searching for the 2DVD set... I'm hooked! ubu

Happy birthday! A great bass player with a beautiful sound, and a great bandleader, too (though somehow - sorry to say this on his birthday - I'd wish in that function he'd be a bit more innovative and open again - the band with Wheeler & Priester was fantastic, in my opinion.)

As we're talking third stream now, these are two fantastic discs that went under my radar for much too long: Sony/Legacy 1996 This includes the LP with the cover above, as well as two thirds of the second (not sure, maybe the first, and the following cover was the first...) "Modern Jazz Society presents..." album, with fantastic music by the likes of J.J., Mingus, George Russell, George Lewis, Jimmy Giuffre, and Gunther Schuller. Soloists include Miles and Joe Wilder on the "Birth of..." part, the other LP includes many of the fine musicians that grouped around Russell in those days, Bill Evans (fantastic on "All About Rosie"!), Hal McKusick etc. Then there's this one here, another Verve Elite Edition CD (from 1999, OOP): I think this was the first of the "Modern Jazz Society presents..." albums. Lots of good stuff, J.J., Getz, Aaron Sachs, Tony Scott, Lucky Thompson... not a large band/orchestra this time, but just as fascinating music, in my opinion. ubu

Picked this one used yesterday, had a quick listen, like it, will return. Nice music, some of it with a ZA touch, some rather European. John Tchicai is in the band. ubu

Not sure it's "off the beaten path" - Dizzy made so many recordings in varying settings, however, it's a great disc! Certainly one of my favourite of Dizzy's - he's soaring, and the writing by J.J. is something else. Which is the album of Waldron tunes, Nate? ubu

What's the problem with that one? It's been a long time I had that in the CD player, but I don't remember noticing anything... they reversed the original side A and B on the disk. The booklet is correct wrt the tracks as they were on the original album, but the disk is not. It runs titles 4 to 6, then 1 to 3, and finishes with 7. Thanks!

I passed a cheap used copy of "Space" a month or two ago... didn't know it was rare or OOP. Didn't like it too much, though, so I don't really regret it. The cover and all is quite stylish, the sound seemed very fine. ubu

Congrats on the discography, Agustín and Mike! Of course I don't complain being listed as having helped some, although i feel bad for not yet having done all that I did indeed promise to... I'll check the 1991-11-06 date with Booby - the playing time for "I should care" is probably wrong (it's only around 6 minutes, the source you had doubles the first three, it seems - I'll check and report back). Then there's anotehr bit of talking somewhere, and the radio guy mentions at least one title of a Tete composition ("Barcelona", I think) that you don't list - but then the titles are performed as a medley, anyway, so it's difficult to sort things out. ****** And as this is not a discographical-details-thread, some thoughts on Tete's music: I listened to "It's about Blues Time" "Lunch in LA" and that early trio disc EKE listed above (with Peter & Wyboris), last week. While I'm impressed, I have to say I don't (yet? - I hope!) really "get" all of his music. I love the trio a lot, they were so good together (the bass-drum team was a seasoned one, as I understand, mainstays of the spanish jazz scene, they also did that Pedro Iturralde record date with Hamp Hawes in Barcelona, really really nice one, reissued [but now OOP I think] on Spanish or some other European Blue Note). With the later discs I got from EKE, I have, well, not exactly troubles, but it just doesn't really "click" with me. Will have to spend some more time with them, I suppose... ubu

Got a burn of this together with "News For Lulu" and a second Clusone disc. No time to listen to the two Clusones yet, but I'll report once I get a chance! ubu

I'm sure this one will come back in the hatOLOGY series some day. I just had a first listen to it a couple of days ago, as well, and wow! I really really like it! Zorn has an acidic alto sound that I love - he's a very able hardbop player for sure (we knew that from the Sonny Clark disc, I suppose), yet he transcends that (and I think in fact any) genre, screeching and squealing and having a good portion of musical fun. Yes, this is ecclecticism, but this is good! Also it's much to the benefit of the music that Lewis plays more of a background role (astonishing he is, nevertheless), as does Frisell, who is quite tasteful (moreso than I'd have expected from the little aural evidence I know - AND like, don't get me wrong, but generally I tend to consider what I know of his work ratehr as "americana" then as "jazz"). ubu

Swiss Army Website We have a militia system, every male reaching age 20 has to serve for around 4 months, and then return to serve 3 weeks in regular intervals (they just changed that from 2 years to 1, which means: I'm out faster, also I won't have to serve all 300 days I actually should have, because of those changes). However, I blow the baritone saxophone there, playing ridiculous pop music and stiff prussian marches and other shit... usually playing along the tenor sax voice, or doing some other strange things, no one there has ears to listen, anyway. That's the drôle de guerre, really! I'm not making fun of the army as such, but if I'd be in charge, it would cost a third and be ten times as efficient. Three weeks sitting around, doing nothing, learning nothing, yet constantly rotating, without the least result. I'll have some whisky on me and will be fine Now back on topic: I'll be able to make a fine recording of today's broadcast. About the Donaueschingen one I'll ask a friend and fellow Taylor-fanatic, not sure he'll be able to record, though, so if you, Claude, can, please do! Didn't yet find the air date of the Saalfelden concert. Will report back on that.
