    Mal Waldron

As a sideman, don't overlook his contributions to Webster Young's For Lady. That's an all-around good outing. Any comments on Waldron's Plays Eric Satie? I've had my eye on that one for awhile. It shows up on eBay quite regularly.
  2. Why, they'll just win. How boring. Try being a Red Wing fan. Hey, did you see that one handed goal by Ovechkin w/8 secs to go in 2nd last night? Holy s***.......that looked amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-D4fBkdnoU Like the man said, "another highlight reel goal." Ovechkin is a remarkable offensive talent. I just wish he had more (or any) of a defensive presence. He is kind of a cherry picker. This goal is a textbook example as you can see him circling the blue line waiting for an outlet pass while the rest of the play is down low. How far the Caps go in the playoffs is going to boil down to goaltending. I'm not sure I'd want to stake my claim with their with the guys they have between the pipes. More to the subject at hand, sounds like a good time to settle in with some good music and a toddy or two.

  4. Many people do who love nothing more than the sound of their own voice. Anyone who can survive in the broadcasting business for 40 years is doing something right, but anyone who takes to focus away from the music and moves it to themselves is doing something wrong.
  5. I really like this kind of music, but $20.00 for a 26 minute CD is a little steep. I may waver later, but for now, I'm out.

  7. I still think Rocco Baldelli might be in the Yankee's plans. Winn is beyond horrible against left handed pitching, so Baldelli could find some PT in that role. More to the point, he's got an incredibly hot girlfriend. http://www.survivinggrady.com/uploaded_images/gia-741461.jpg
  8. Now we're talking. Something for young and old alike. Or how about some large scale magic acts like David Copperfield. I know. Maybe he could make the halftime entertainment disappear.
  9. Over at Elusive Disc, they have a Blue Note XRCD subscription program. When you sign up, you automatically receive two new discs each month for 12 months. Once you reach that point, the 25th disc is free. Kind of like having a punch card where you get your morning coffee. Sounds like an OK way to stay ahead of the curve, not to mention the bragging rights associated with being the first person on your block to get this classic music in an updated format. 10. Don't overlook the fine cast of supporting players. Nell and Inspector Fenwick from Dudley Doright and Fearless Leader from R&B. And, although it was and object and not a character, who could forget the infamous Kerward Derby.
  11. I'm sure there's a sizable group of people out there in who actually enjoy these half time extravaganzas, but I'll be damned if I know any of them. I have never found a single person who thinks these shows are anything other than horrifically bad, if not downright embarrassing. But, as the expression goes, no one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public. If you're old enough to remember the old Orange Bowl half times featuring the likes of Anita Bryant, it's easy to see that only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
  12. Hey, Dan. Welcome back, man. Hope things are going well for you.
  13. I've been thinking a lot about this lately. As you probably know, the two remaining original members of The Who and two other guys who don't play bass or drums nearly as well as John Entwistle and Keith Moon will be performing during halftime at the Super Bowl. Although the chances are slim, all we can hope is that this will go better for The Who than it did for the Stones. Who needs another amped up, played too fast, get 'em while they last send up of a group's greatest hits? Not this listener. Who needs a bandstand surrounded by gyrating, paid- to-play young people whose parents might not even have been born when the Who was in their prime and whose exposure of to their music begins and ends with this show? Not this listener. But what scares me the most, what's been keeping me up nights is the possibility that Pete Townshend, who will be 65 years old next May, might see fit to end the show by smashing his guitar to pieces. Frankly, I can't imagine anything more embarrassing. I hereby petition the gods of rock and roll. For the sake of dignity, do not let this happen.
  14. While I wouldn't characterize these two discs as being Yet Another Workout or Soul Station II, they are very serviceable and I'm glad I have them.
  15. David, thanks for posting this. I have to confess that this is the first Salinger I've ever read. I thought it was terrific. Quirky, off plumb, whatever. The sort of piece where you can lose track of the narrative in deference to style and nuance. More than once, I laughed out loud, just like I used to when I'd read David Sedaris in the New Yorker. On the basis of this limited exposure, I must make it a point to do Catcher, and soon.
  16. You and me Chris. I think we could make this happen.
  17. I think someone with even a rudimentary knowledge of English could move to Nigeria and make a fair living offering their services as a scam letter editor. I mean, the first thing you notice when you get one of these is how poorly written and badly organized they are. With jobs in this country so hard to come by, I don't think anyone would begrudge someone who was just trying to makes ends meet.
  18. Although it doesn't say it on the website, this has been pushed to at least mid-2010 because Mosaic has yet to finalize all the licensing agreements. Frankly, I'm surprised Mosaic would go so far as to announce a set if they hadn't secured all the rights. Isn't that the very first thing you'd do? Your customer base is already a little gnarly about catalog availability so why run the risk of further antagonizing it by having to pull the plug on a much anticipated release? I'm not at all impugning your credibility, but can you tell us where you got this information? Thanks. I live in NY, and have been a customer for 17 years. I call them frequently for info, or just to shoot the you know what. Frankly, I had the same reaction as you did at first. I asked why it was announced on the site, and was told that although they are relatively certain they will obtain necessary licensing, the process takes much longer than any of us non-business types here might think. Does this work for you? Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like you might have taken my question the wrong way. That was certainly not my intent.

  20. And he will probably hit 20 flyballs that will go over the fence 212 feet away from home plate! Heck, Damon hit what, 17 at home, 7 on the road??? Still, I don't like that no one wants Damon for one main reason, his age. Well, having Borass as an agent probably doesn't help at this point of his career. That and the fact he's got a rag arm. Damon can't throw. Coaches know it, base runners know it. He may be the most "run on" outfielder in the majors.
  21. Two ATR Threadgill albums, When Was That? and Pass the Bucket, are available on both LP and CD. I recently got the CDs from Jazz Loft. Both are also available from iTunes. When Was That for $11.99 and Pass The Bucket for only $5.94.
  22. Here's a clip from the Doors Of The 21st Century tour that shows off Krieger nicely on Riders On The Storm. It also illustrates how much better the group would have been with a different drummer and a stand alone bass player. All things considered, not a bad choice to "play" Morrison although I might've looked into Val Kilmer's availability. The guy actually looks a little like Morrison might have looked had he survived. This is actually a pretty cool video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4zWSMlZnbQ You might also want to check out the video from the same performance where Ray Manzarek appears to channel the spirit of Keith Jarrett during Light My Fire.
  23. All glove, no bat. I don't know if I'd agree with that. In his five most recent years with the Giants he hit .290 with 51 home runs, 262 RBI's and 73 stolen bases. I'd say mostly glove, some bat.
  24. The Yankees have just announced the signing of Randy Winn to a one year deal. I think that's a good insurance move. He's had reasonable numbers for the last few seasons. On the downside, any chances of bringing back Johnny Damon seem to have disappeared entirely.
