Jim, I did jazz radio for about six years in the late '80's and early '90's. I know how that works. How does this work? Equipment-wise etc.? I might be interested. Can you PM me, or sent an email to davejames48@gmail.com

I loved the comment, "That thing is more eye-catching than oiled cleavage,"

On the Rhino website, they have an application where you can actually click on any one of four corners in a virtual "room" and hear the music coming from that quadrant.

Wonder what marketing genius came up with the name Discrete for Quadrophonic sound? No soup for him!

Thank God the Shindig Dancers were there to prop Jackie up. Without them, I don't know how you can even watch this. What was it about shows like this or Hullabaloo or Hollywood Palace that made it mandatory to pepper the stages with a bunch of knuckleheads whose only accomplishment was to detract from both the performer and the performance. Didn't get it then, don't get it now.

Indeed he did. He took over from Clyde McPhatter as lead singer with Billy Ward & the Dominoes in 1953 and had a hit that year with "Rags to riches". One thing that Wilson could do that JB never could was sing a big ballad, or a blues ballad. "Doggin' around", "A woman, a lover, a friend" and "No pity in the naked city" are some of the JW singles I regret ditching back in the day. MG I don't know. I always thought It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World and I'm Just A Prisoner were a pretty "big" ballads.

Wasn't Wilson a professional boxer before he got into the music biz? That might explain his mastery of foot work.

Our local PBS affiliate is in the midst of a fund raising effort, so they're showing some stuff you don't see every day. Last night it was the original TAMI show from 1964. Jan & Dean, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Marvin Gaye, Leslie Gore and, last but not least, a very young James Brown. Man, you want to talk about a guy whose body sings. He was all over the place. Check this out: He and Jackie Wilson would have given Michael Jackson a run for his money any day of the week.

They've been working on more sets than those two; let's hope they'll be able to get them past the planning stages. Don't tease. Are you sworn to silence on this?

This morning I received an e-mail from Scott Wenzel indicating that the Bix, Tram & Tea set was moving to "last chance" status. This got me thinking that most of the news we hear from Mosaic these days is bad. Even the good news, e.g. the fact that sets which had been unavailable were once again in play, is kind of marginal. Now, in addition to this, Hans lets us know that economic conditions are forcing Mosaic to close its warehouse. When you get right down to it, and since the release of the Crosby set, this has been by far the most dormant period in the history of the label. The only "in development" sets are beset with licensing problems, so there's really not much to look forward to at all. I sure hope this doesn't portend the label going dark. That would be way too much like losing a close friend.

I watched Airplane again last night. What's great about that movie is that even though I've seen it maybe 20 times, I still see things I never noticed before. I hate to admit it, but last night was the first time I saw all the mayonnaise jars on the shelf behind the physician at the Mayo Clinic. I guess I was too focused on the heart jumping all over his desk. I think my favorite scene when the kid visits the cockpit and Jabbar keeps denying he's Jabbar . Then when he gets sick and they have to pull him out of the co-pilot's chair, he's dressed in his Laker uniform, goggles and all. Inspired.

I'm going to see Further Monday night, the band with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh. I've never heard a note this band has played, so it's going to be something of a crapshoot. This is the last date of their West Coast mini-tour. In addition to the original Dead guys, the band consists of John Kadlecik of the Dark Star Orchestra on guitar, Jeff Chimenti of RatDog on keyboards and Jay Lane and Joe Russo on drums. The back up singers (and its always good to have plenty of vocal backup available when Bobby and Phil are involved) are Zoe Ellis and Sunshine Garcia Becker. Should be interesting.

I can hear it. That's good news since my S.O. claims my hearing is all but gone. This confirms what I've been telling her; that my internal settings are simply incompatible with the frequency of her voice.

I sent a note to Mosaic asking for the latest on the Henry Threadgill box. Here's their response: We are waiting for approvals and our best guess at the moment would be mid-year. Regards, Mosaic Records I guess that's good news, although the word approvals could be subject to multiple interpretations.

Pizza Beer? This is sick & wrong.

I know this is off topic, but the discussion of the pizza cone (which looks like a decent idea to me) reminded me of pretzel cones for ice cream. If you're a fan of salty and sweet, get yourself one of these with a nice big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Mmm, mmm, good. -

We have a Leonberger who is subject to big time hot spots. Granted, our problem is canine and yours is feline, but we've had a fair amount of success with a home remedy consisting of water, baby oil and Listerine (as in mouthwash). Mix it in thirds and use an atomizing spray bottle as an applicator. -

Or, to slightly tweak the phrase, Young is better old. I like it.

Hey, congratulations to you and your wife-to-be. The woman who can tolerate not only the volume of music but also, the kind of music, is something of a rara avis.

When I played slo-pitch softball, our post game beverage of choice, especially at tournaments when a little less alcohol in your system was a good idea, was what we called red beer. Beer and tomato juice with a dash of salt. 2/3'rds beer, 1/3 tomato juice. -
Just got this information from the folks at Rhino Handmade. This is a music only DVD release. I'm a big fan of Chicago's first album, so this is one I'll probably end up getting. Here's a link to their website: http://www.rhino.com/shop/product/chicago-chicago-transit-authority-dvd-quadraphonic

Joshua Breakstone might be worth looking into.

The first thing you have to acknowledge is that what's happening is beyond your immediate control. Then, instead of focusing on what will be lost, focus on what you were able to accomplish in the 28 years you devoted to music instruction. I'm sure you had quite an effect on a lot of kid's lives and on their appreciation of music. You should feel good about that.

There's a pretty nice retrospective of Young's work between 1966-1976 called Decade. Entries from Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse and all the solo stuff. I DL'ed it from eMusic just this week. At present, my collection is painfully short of Young. I do have a DVD I highly recommend. It's called Neil Young in Berlin. It includes a hair-raising version of Like A Hurricane and a largely unknown tune called Back to Berlin that is rock solid.
