Which Board Member turned you on to Which Artist?
Dave James replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Thank you -- might not have got there otherwise. Wow. Who'd have thought. I only know her from Hurt (*) which is one of my all-time favorites. Looks like I'm off on another scavenger hunt. Thanks guys. (*) -
Does that mean that Pat Sajak was really Illya Kuryakin? If that's the case, I'm going need a few minutes to recalibrate.

Hope you had a great birthday, Conrad. I know when you blew out the candles on your cake, you were wishing that the health care bill will soon bite the dust. You do know, of course, that a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting
Dave James replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm disappointed to find out that so much of this has already been released on CD. There is so much Lucky out there that you'd hope for three CD's of unrelased material. There is easily enough of that out there to warrant the big box treatment. I'm guessing that getting the rights to all of it would be the elephant in the room. I wonder if they ever looked into including the Jackson/Thompson Savoys in this set. That would have made me a much happier camper. -
Did you get this from Dusty Groove? They used to have this and one other Cuppini led LP available from time to time. I came this close to pulling the trigger on both of them many times. Gil Cuppini seems to always be in good company. One of my very favorite CD's is his What's New Vol. 2 that features Barney Wilen and Dusko Goykovic. That's one that ought to be in everyone's collection.

I go further back than Mission Impossible. My brother and I were big fans of a '50's TV show called Fury. Graves always seemed like someone you might be able to sit down with and have a beer. Not only did he have a 60 year career in show business, but a 60 year marriage as well. R.I.P.

If the stylus remains in the run out groove, then in theory, no damage will be done. However, on more than one occasion, I have seen the stylus actually exit the run out groove and begin brushing up against the record label. That is not a good thing under any circumstances. Bottom line, I'd characterize the tone arm lifter as one of those better safe than sorry devices. I've turned over every rock I can find on the internet and, while there's lots of discussion about lifters, actually finding one is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Even if you do, the cost is outrageous: http://cgi.ebay.com/Alphason-Automatic-Tonearm-Lifter-RARE-NOS_W0QQitemZ150422640664QQcmdZViewItemQQptZTurntable_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2305e35818#ht_500wt_1182. With more and more people either getting into or getting back into vinyl, it surprises me that someone hasn't recognized this opportunity and taken advantage of it. I'm sure it's only a matter of time. Hopefully, sooner than later. If I had even a rudimentary knowledge of metal fabrication, I'd give this a go myself.

The other side of Jo, a.k.a. Darlene Edwards pickin' on the Bee Gees. I don't know squick about singing but my understanding is that it's not easy to do this kind of thing.

Well, I'll cheer him on and wish him well in his pursuit of citibank, but even Howell himself would probably admit he's a nonpareil dumbass. Typical American lack of accountability. What I did was incredibly stupid, but, by God, someone else is going to pay for it. I hate to see kind of thing happen to anyone, but at least have the guts to accept the responsibility for your own behavior.

I've often thought if a new sheriff showed up in town and told me that in the future I could only listen to one vocalist, male or female, I wouldn't hesitate for a second. Jo Stafford I'd say and when can I start listening? Unfortunately, most of the clips on YouTube are static, so there appears to be very little video that documents her performances. Too bad. Here's one of those picture vids with Jo doing The Nearness of You. All I can say is "wow".

The primary turntable in my system is a Thorens TD125. It's 100% manual in every sense of the word, so when the stylus hits the run out grooves, it just keeps going. Years ago I had a simple little device that would raise the tone arm off a record to prevent damage to the stylus, but that bad boy is long gone. You would think with the resurgence in the popularity of vinyl that something like this would be readily available, but that's not the case. There are a couple listed on eBay but I can't justify paying over $200 for something that probably cost $10.00 back in the day. Is anyone aware of a reasonably priced source for lifters? It would sure make my vinyl life a whole lot easier.

Chris, Yes, thanks for the heads up. I was sorely tempted by this set when it first came out even at the full price. This is an amazing bargain. As close to giving something away as you can get. I'm a big WWII buff so reading through the issues from the war years is going to be a real experience.

I saw these guys years ago. Just went by myself as none of my friends were much into that kind of music. Man, the crowd was dressed to the nines. I felt like an intruder. Anyhow, my favorite EW&F tune is That's The Way Of The World, followed closely by After The Love Is Gone and Keep Your Head To The Sky . After those three, there are a bunch of good songs that all run together.

Looking for help/advice on mailing vinyl
Dave James replied to fent99's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Have we got a troll here? Looks that way to me. A quick perusal of TheLBC's profile page indicates that he hasn't added any friends yet. Wonder why?
