  1. Now I see why your nom de plume is "Impossible."

    Flugelbone

Sure looks like a bass trumpet to me. Not sure why it would be called a Flugelbone. Wouldn't that imply some sort of slide mechanism?
  3. Too bad he couldn't take a mulligan.
  4. The only Lennon bio I've ever read is Albert Goldman's hack job. If anyone can recommend a balanced and informative alternative, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.
  5. Chas, That's a spot on observation.
  6. As much as appreciate the stoic professionalism of Hadeki Matsui, I think this is the right call. I'm hearing that the Mariners might be interested in signing him if New York does pass. He'd make for a nice combination with Ichiro. I might even watch some M's games if that happens. If the Yanks don't sign him, I certainly wish him the best wherever he goes. He's a class act. Ghost, that book looks interesting. I have not read it. Halberstam is as good as it gets whether he's writing about sports or politics. I think I mentioned to you how much I enjoyed his book about the Yankee Red Sox pennant race in 1949, Summer of '49. The Breaks of the Game, the book he wrote about the Portland Trailblazers post-championship travails, is a classic.
  7. Good. That will balance out the RBI Baseball 1986 video game where everyone was white regardless of their actual color.
  8. 35/38. I missed Return to Forever, Michael Brecker and The Mahivishnu Orchestra. I knew the albums but I kept trying to enter John McLaughlin.
  9. Not much in terms of specifics at this point, but the NYT is reporting that Tiger Woods was involved in a single vehicle car accident early this morning. He was leaving his Florida home when he ran over a fire hydrant and a tree while driving his 2009 Cadillac Escalade. No word on whether alcohol was involved as the accident is still under investigation. Hope everything is OK.
  10. The boxing posts reminded me of this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_fJYhcUBVA
  11. That's actually kind of an interesting thought. Wonder if anyone ever pitched this to Mosaic?
  12. Actually, if you want to blame a person, blame Curt Flood for challenging the reserve clause. If you want to blame an entity, blame major league baseball for not forcing the union to negotiate a salary cap. Sure the Yankees have spent a lot of money, but they have a lot of money to spend. And they haven't done anything that isn't within the rules, they just had the resources to exploit them. In short, the Yanks are just a convenient scape goat for the myriad of financial ills that currently beset the game.
  13. I have an inexplicable fondness for The Pixies. With regard to Wilco, their song, Impossible Germany from Sky Blue Sky is very nice. One of my favorite contemporary guitar solos.
  14. I'm no fan of bowing, but of all the bassists who occasionally ply that trade, Paul Chambers has to be the worst. When he goes arco, it sounds to me like he's got as good a chance of sawing his instrument in two as he does of completing the solo.
  15. I completely agree. The artier they got, the more their music suffered. I think The Who as a group, but mostly Townsend, got caught up in the fame and all the slick things they could do in the studio. IMO, it cost them the hard edge and chippiness that got them noticed in the first place. Once they became popular, it didn't take the boys long to completely forget where they came from. Nevertheless, I still love Keith Moon. A complete original. He's the personification of what is probably the Who's most memorable lyric, "hope I die before I get old." Up over and out.
  16. Nothing very deep or thought provoking. I just replaced a picture of 50's Cincinnati Red, Ted Kluszewski with a Grateful Dead logo. Up over and out.
  17. I hope not many with a celeste. I hate that namby pamby instrument. When I have to listen to one, I try to convince myself, usually unsuccessfully, that it's really a vibraharp. Up over and out.
  18. Me too. A great example of the band's close three part harmony. Or, I suppose five or six part harmony if you're into counting the double tracked vocals. Up over and out.
  19. Well, certainly, Dr. Watson, as played by Nigel Bruce, bears little if any resemblance to the character in the Conan Doyle originals. I'm sure Hollywood exercised its "poetic license" for purposes of injecting a bit of levity into the proceedings and, perhaps as well, to make Holmes seem that much brighter. I just find Bruce's bumbling and overall clumsy demeanor amusing. Of course, that's not the only way they toyed with those stories, A number of the later plot lines revolved around events in the '40's to correspond with the war effort. I have not seen the BBC series, so I could not comment on that. Up over and out.
  20. A Taste of Honey comes close. Up over and out.
  21. Well for one thing, and as closed minded as this may seem, for me, there will never be anyone who can measure up to Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce when it comes to playing Holmes and Watson. Second, there are very few movies I enjoy that are laden with CGI's, even the simple stuff. Ironically, one of those is Iron Man starring the unindicted co-conspirator himself, Robert Downey, Jr. Lastly, there are a lot of other movies I'd rather see. Up over and out.
  22. One more reason to villify Bill Bavasi, one of the worst GM's in recent memory. Up over and out.
  23. I think I'll fire up a fatty in honor of Lincecum's second Cy. He's kind of a local boy, having starred at the U Dub. I came within an eyelash of writing a letter to Brian Cashman insisting that the Yanks draft this guy. He always had the mark of a special pitcher. Man, would he have looked good in pinstripes. Up over and out,
  24. I was just checking my online bank statement when I noticed that my account has debited for the Bing Crosby set. Even though the Mosaic website has not been updated, it looks like this one should be shipping in the next day or so. Up over and out.
  25. Yeah, Guy Ritchie sure seems like a terrible director, doesn't he? One of those who's all 'tude and talent. I'll not being seeing the new Holmes movie, but it's not because of Guy Ritchie. I love both Snatch (one of Brad Pitt's off plumb roles that really works) and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. There are more interesting characters in those movies than you can count. Both films, IMO, are right up there with The Big Lebowski. Speaking of The Dude, Jeff Bridges is going to be in the Coen Brothers 2011 repurposing of True Grit. That one sounds like fun. Up over and out.
