  1. I have this. Very '40's. Of those I've watched, my favorite is "I Walked With A Zombie." Very atmospheric and creepy. Lots of voodoo and all that. Good Halloween fare for sure. Up over and out.
  2. Chris, Yes, belated felici- and salu- tations. Keep those NYT articles coming. Thanks for taking the time to do that for all of us. Up over and out.
  3. Perhaps he should be called Duke Brubeck. It would have been interesting to get Desmond's perspective on this. It does seem odd to me that if Brubeck did have "a huge hand in writing the song", why he would not have claimed at least co-authorship for publishing/royalty purposes. Can you imagine what kind of bucks that tune must've generated over the years? Up over and out.
  4. A couple of more comments and then I'm outta here. Piniella replaces Torre. A-Rod gets traded. I've heard the Angels have offered a package of players that would be hard to turn down, although I'd prefer to see Rodriguez in the National League. Re-sign Sheffield and then trade him for some prime pitching prospects. That's it. See ya. Up over and out.
  5. Nothing is wrong with the Cowboys. As long as they keep losing, they're fine. The Eagles Jimmy Johnson created a masterful defensive game plan that kept the 'Boys on their heels for most of the game, especially in the second half. McNabb was brilliant, everything Bledsoe wasn't. T.O. looked like he was about to go off on someone a half a dozen times. With no quarterback to get him the ball consistently, it's only a matter of time before he loses it. Hey, Dallas, welcome to the nightmare. Been there, done that. Also, just to set the record straight about Tom Brady replacing Bledsoe, New England only made that move after Bledsoe was injured. That's not to say he was setting the league on fire when he was starting for the Pats, but an injury, not a coaching decision, is what put Brady in the starting lineup. Up over and out.
  6. I've often wondered about Clemens. His before and after pix are not dissimilar to those of other obvious juicers like Bonds and Sosa. Frankly, I'm surprised more attention hasn't been paid to pitchers. It's like if you don't hit home runs, you couldn't possibly be cheating. Bullshit. Up over and out.
  7. Albom's books should by rights be black and blue from people touching them with ten foot poles. I need this new age stuff like I need a hole in my head. Nonetheless, Albom is a pretty fair sports columnist for The Freep (Detroit Free Press). I regularly read his articles, especially the ones about my Red Wings. If he'd just get back to dancing with the gal that brung him, we'd all be the better for it. Guess the allure of the easy money associated with writing self-help, self-analysis drivel for the masses is just too great to ignore. Up over and out.
  8. Dan, You know I have to say this. The Yankees have to be worried about Mussina's hand and The Unit's back. The Red Sox only have to worry about making a tee time. Up over and out.
  9. Amen to that. I just pulled this off e-Music the other night. Some serious mojo here. I like it better than "Conflict". Wonder why this guy just stopped playing? It's sure not for lack of chops. Up over and out.
  10. I have the first two Beatles' box sets on Capitol, the ones with both the mono and stereo versions. I put a number of the tune on my i-Pod that I thought were good to excellent, but, in general, lesser known and not over abused. Here's what I included: Ask Me Why P.S. I Love You Do You Wan To Know A Secret Yes It Is (Please Don't Wear Red Tonight) You Like Me Too Much I Don't Want To Spoil The Party Devil In Her Heart I'm Happy Just To Dance With You I'll Get You If I Fell (One of my all time favorites) The Night Before I Need You (Another favorite) Another Girl You're Gonna Lose That Girl No Reply I'll Follow The Sun I'll Be Back Up over and out.
  11. Two come to mind: "When approaching infinity, beware of intersecting parallel lines." "This is Godot. I was here. Where were you?" I also enjoyed finding Wilt Chamberlain's autograph on the ceiling of a restroom. Up over and out.
  12. Dan, Hope ya'll have as good a b-day as you can. I know things haven't exactly gone your way of late, but go out and find a way to have some fun. With regard to the Sox, I guess it's wait until next year, especially if they sign Gary Sheffield. Up over and out.
  13. Would someone help me understand why Bobby Brown is still relevant to anything. This article refers to him as an R&B singer. How long has it been since he did anything entertainment-wise at all? In this crazy, mixed up, celebrity obsessed, voyeuristic world, he's one of a number of people, like Cato Kalen or Fabio or Paris Hilton, who is famous simply for being famous. If Whitney had a brain, she would have dumped his ass years ago. All she has to thank him for is 14 years of misery and a trashed career. Up over and out.
  14. I've always had a soft spot for the 1957 Impulse recording, "Zoot Sims Plays Four Altos". It's kind of a novelty record where Sims plays alto and then overdubs the results...kind of like an alto sax section. It features John Williams on piano, Knobby Totah (one of the all-time great names in jazz) on bass and Gus Johnson on drums. I have this on vinyl but I don't think it's ever been on CD. Up over and out.
  15. Larry, I've had the de Valk Baker book for several years, but I've yet to read it. I did do the Gavin bio and that was depressing enough to steer me even clearer of the de Valk. I must make it a point to read that one. Have you read de Valk's Ben Webster biography? I have that one too but, again, it remains unread. If you're read it, I'd be very interested in your reaction / comments. Up over and out.

    Rod Levitt

If you like Rod Levitt, you might want to check out Lyle Murphy. I have two of his albums on my i-Pod, "Gone With the Woodwinds" and "New Orbits in Sound". Murphy is not as "off plumb" as Levitt, but I find him to be pretty interesting, much in the manner of Levitt. There's some echoes of both Gil Melle and George Russell in each of their compositions. Up over and out.
  17. If you're into '30's soap, "The Women" is pretty good. If I recall, quite the star studded cast. In addition to Joan Crawford, there's Norma Shearer, Rosiland Russell and the sweater girl, Paulette Goddard. Color was still kind of an oddity in 1939, so the fashion show sequence in the middle of the picture was proabably quite a shock to a lot of movie goers at the time. Not to mention how cool it is to see some of the haute coutoure of the period in living color. Up over and out.
  18. Any manager who considers 100 pitches to be his entire staff's limit is crazy. As Joe Morgan pointed out the other night, some pitchers can throw well over 100 and still be effective while other flame out in the mid-80s. To overlay the same pitch count template on everyone makes no sense at all. It's just a cop out. Not to mention how it can affect your bull pen and suboptimize the contribution a genuine horse can make. Up over and out.
  19. If Ford had never made any films other than "The Blackboard Jungle" and "The Big Heat", he would still have had a memorable career. Not a glitzy, glamorous, leading man type...more of an everyman. As Berigan pointed out, he kind of snuck up on you...you didn't realize how good he was until you really watched what he was doing. For sure, guys don't stick around Hollywood as long as he did if they're not pretty good at what they're doing. Also agree with Larry vis a vis "The Violent Men". One of Barbara Stanwyck's strongest later roles. Up over and out.
  20. Dan and I have had our moments in the past, but I think we've learned to respect eachother and I consider him a friend. While I was a bit taken aback by some of the exchanges between him and Heatwave, that was between the two of them and none of my business. This, however, takes things to an altogether different level. Now it is my business. I think I speak for all of us when I say that these kind of remarks have no place on this board. Heatwave, please, haul your twisted psyche someplace else. You're not welcome here. Up over and out.
  21. Dan, Kottaras is playing right here in Portland, being as we're the Padre's AAA affiliate. He'd better be a good defensive catcher, cuz he's hitting seventh in our lineup and punishing the ball at a .224 clip. Up over and out.
  22. Boston newspapers are reporting this morning that Big Papi looks to be in good shape. Among other things, they've done stress testing and an echo-cardiogram. Everything seems to have turned out fine. They are saying he may be back in the lineup as early as next week. No word on Manny or WMP. Also, it appears David Wells is headed back to San Diego. No word as yet as to who the Sox get in return. With the Yanks up 8 and 9 in the win column, this trade could be construed as a striking of the colors as far as the 2006 season goes. Nonetheless, with the Sox scheduled to get most of their guys back soon, including the all important Varitek, this Yankee fan will not be celebrating anything until the fat lady sings. Up over and out.
  23. I assume many of you have seen the film "Let's Get Lost". In a word, that is a sobering experience. Still, it's a good and a fair look at the early '80's Baker, even with all the scabs pulled off. Not pretty, but fascinating. It's kind of like a car wreck in that you can't stop looking at it. If you haven't seen this and you're lucky enough to find a copy, don't pass up the opportunity. Up over and out.
  24. One more thumb up for all four volumes of the "Chet in Paris" series, especially, the material with Dick Twardzik. And another one for "Chet Baker in Tokyo". That's as good late period Chet as you're likely to run into. Count me a fan of his singing as well. It's interesting that his voice deteriorated right along with the rest of him. He was a more than adequate singer in the early years, but by the end, something of an acquired taste. I equate him to Billie Holiday circa "Lady in Satin", basically running on fumes, but gutting it out on emotion alone. There's a couple of lifetimes of hurt in both those voices. Up over and out.
  25. The Red Sox freefall just got worse. In addition to Big Papi, they've sent Manny and Willy Mo back to Boston as well. Manny for his knee and Pena for his wrist. It's like they blew all four tires at once. Will the last guy leaving the locker room please remember to turn out the lights? ESPN is now substantiating what Dan mentioned earlier; that the Sox are actively shopping David Wells. Teams interested include the Mets, Twins, Diamondbacks, Padres, Cards, Phillies, Dodgers, A's and Reds. Up over and out.
