Not that I don't like her, but I haven't a single Sarah Vaughn CD in my entire collection. Up over and out.

Jim, I just sent you $25.00. I haven't pitched in before, so consider this my $5 with interest. I'd hate to see this board in jeopardy. I remember when the BN board went kaput and how it made me feel a little adrift. Hopefully, that won't happen again. I need tethering. Up over and out.

Noted here as well, but I always figure folks have their reasons for not posting. Dan, if you don't come back, who am I going to have to kick around when the Yanks beat the Sox this year and then take the Series? It won't be nearly as much fun if you're not putting up any resistance. Up over and out

The problem, of course, is that Kenny G laughs all the way to the bank. He realized a long time ago that all most people are after is ear candy. He's just givin' 'em what they want. No reason to get excited, just ignore him. Interesting enough, I happened to see The Pat Methany Group many years ago here in Portland when the opening act was none other than Jeff Lorber featuring Kenny G. Witnessing the sewing of the the seeds of animus, as it were. Up over and out.

Don Cheadle may play Miles Davis in biopic
Dave James replied to mgraham333's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I guess before we just hand the part over to Mr. Cheadle by acclamatioon, someone ought to make sure he can do the rasp. I've always thought that was a big part of the Miles mystique. IMO, if ya'll can't sound like him, I don't care how good an actor you are, you ain't Miles. Period, end of story. Up over and out. -
I got the same message this morning. I'm assuming when the Winterland set does become available that they are not keeping any of these pre-orders on file and that anyone who threw their hat in the ring early will have to kick start the process all over again. For an outfit that seems to run a pretty tight marketing ship, I'm amazed they could let something like this happen. Myself? I'm choosing to take this message with a grain of salt. I think they know all the "w's" (what, where, when etc.) right now. I think they just let the (China) cat out of the bag a little sooner than they wanted to. Someone in their sales department must've tried to take on too big a fatty and wound up pushing the wrong button. Up over and out.

Clifford, There was actually some discussion of Snoop playing Miles on this board awhile back. Go figure. Up over and out. -
Don Cheadle may play Miles Davis in biopic
Dave James replied to mgraham333's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've liked Don Cheadle ever since I first saw him as the DA on the old TV show "Picket Fences". I think he would be great as Miles and his status as a serious and well-respected craftsman would impart a certain level of gravitas to the project. No matter what direction they go with this, anything beats the Snoop Dog option. Up over and out. -
Anyone heard this? It's a 3 disc live recording. Another Dusty Groove flyer for Lonesome Dave, but one that's turned out to be a keeper. These guys dance the fine line between out and in a very engaging manner. A tasty combination, I really must say. If you're into this kind of thing, and just like your red hots at the ballpark, get 'em while they last. Up over and out.

Anyone know of a way to keep Wasps away???
Dave James replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You probably have a nest someplace. Wasps tend to build them in shaded areas, under eaves, around the ceiling in the corners of garages. Sometimes they find a hole in a truss or and outside support beam and burrow into those to set up shop. Unless you can figure out where the nest is and how to destroy it, you're going to continue to have trouble. Also, and I'm sure you already know this, these are not very happy little campers to begin with. Point being, you don't want to piss them off. I'd be doubly concerned if you have kids. If this continues, I'd suggest getting an exterminator. You just have to remember that they know what they're doing and you don't. Up over and out. -
As I recall, Bev Stapleton was quite a big fan of hers. Haven't seen many posts from him recently, but if my memory is on point, he'd be the one to discuss Ms. Winstone. Up over and out.

It took my order fine. Striking while the iron is hot. No screwin' around this time...the kind of dilly dallying that cost me the Filmore set. According the the website, May 1st is the release date. Up over and out.

Twins player Kirby Puckett passes away at 44
Dave James replied to HolyStitt's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That would have to be a mighty big heart. Up over and out. -
Guy - That one scene defines the whole Jack Bauer personna. I actually think he would have shot his own mother if he thought it would get him what he needed. Really sorry to see Edgar go. Television has very few everymen and he was one of them. Looked to me like Chloe might had more of a Jones for him that you might have imagined. Geez, I thought for a second this might turn into a Captain Kirk / Mr. Spock moment from the second Star Trek movie. "...the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few..." That moment. Sure nice to see Kim again. That's a full on babe. I would advise her new boyfriend that Jack should not be trifled with in this manner. Seems to me anyone who has their radar engaged would know intuitively that this is a guy you don't want to mess with. His actions can't bode too well for his future, either with Kim or in general. Boy do I miss David Palmer. Up over and out.

Got this one the other day from Dusty Groove. I'm a big fan of the Swedish music scene from the '50's and '60's and I'm reasonably familiar with a lot of the players, but Lars Lystedt was a new one on me. I was yet again seduced by the siren song of the DG reviewer (God, make him stop) and took a flyer on this one. My first and continuing reaction to this one is that it's a European "Kind of Blue". Just a really, really nice set of creative and imaginative music. I bring it up because it's once again available from da bastids. Here's the pitch: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lars Lystedt -- Jazz Under The Midnight Sun (with bonus tracks) . . . CD . . . $26.99 Swedisk/Celeste (Japan), 1963/1964 Beautifully modern work from the Swedish scene of the 60s -- and proof that Scandinavian jazz was some of the freshest in Europe at the time! The album features incredibly evocative work from the sextet of trombonist Lars Lystedt -- a player who's clearly picked up a sense of shape and sound from Bob Brookmeyer, but who's also working here in a much more complicated approach to rhythms and tones! The work's never too far out, but is kind of an extension of 50s experiments in well-crafted horn charts and writing -- in a way that almost has a jazz soundtrack sort of feel, where the overall purpose seems to be more towards shaping a scene in sound, than it is pushing the individual egos of any one players. Lars' sextet have a talent for allowing space to create even more of a tension in their horns -- in a way that reminds us of the legendary JFK Quintet, but which is a bit looser overall. Other players include Lars-Goran Ulander on alto, Lief Hellman on tenor, and Berndt Egerbladh on piano -- and the CD features 5 bonus tracks added to the original album! Titles include "Bothnia", "Woodoo", "The Hammock", "Cook It", "Fanfar", and "Krypto". Up over and out.

Teddy Charles Jazz in the Garden at the Museum of Modern Art
Dave James replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
I think this was up for discussion awhile back. If I recall correctly, it was issued twice by two different labels. Don't know the specifics but for whatever it's worth, I seem to recall that one had more material on it than the other. Up over and out. -
Twins player Kirby Puckett passes away at 44
Dave James replied to HolyStitt's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
If you want to see the personification of a player carrying a team on his back, look no further than the 6th game of the 1991 Series. Absolutely remarkable. It was painful to see Puckett tarnish his reputation after he was done playing, but while he was between the lines, he was something. Up over and out. -
If he ever gets dialed in off the tee, he will be untouchable. He hit almost no fairways at Doral and he still wins. That's got to be pretty discouraging if your trying to compete at this level. His ability to recover is other worldly. You can argue all you want about who's the best golfer ever, but when it comes to getting up and down, no one has ever been this good. Up over and out.

You know it almost spring when...
Dave James replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This reminds of a golf trip I took with some of the guys from work a few years back. One of them, unbeknownst to the rest of us, brought along a video called "Fatliners". He put it on without any fanfare, and I can tell you, you've never heard anything quite like that reaction in your life. I mean the gals in this flick make the one's in the picture Weizie posted look like Victoria Secret models. I'm serious...these women clocked in at what had to be seven or eight spins. They were so big they couldn't even move. So, can you guess who the guy was who performed some of the service work? Yup, the human sweater, Ron Jeremy. I'm telling you, you have never, ever seen anything like this. Totally, completely and utterly disgusting. We couldn't quit watching. Up over and out. -

I think what Young brings to the table that's sadly lacking in 99% of what passes for popular music these days is authenticity. With him, what you see is what you get. I remember him way back when with The Buffalo Springfield or Crazy Horse..."Cinnamon Girl", "Down By The River"... those are great tunes, full of memories. And, at least IMO, he gave Crosby Stills & Nash an edge that they never came close to without him. Can you even imagine CS&N doing a song like "Southern Man" without him? I also think he's underrated as a musician. I have a DVD of a concert performance in Berlin, Germany where he plays a monstrous electric version of "Like a Hurricane". If his extended guitar solo on that one doesn't knock your socks off, something is seriously wrong with your innards. There's a new concert film out from Jonathan Demme called "Heart of Gold" that supposably captures the essence of Young as an artist. From what I understand, it was the talk of the recent Sundance Film Festival. It was filmed in the Ryman (?) Auditorium in Nashville, Kentucky. Havent' seen it yet, but I intend to. Up over and out.

What Young Lion records will hold up?
Dave James replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Speaking of Roy Hargrove, "The Tokyo Sessions" on Novus is a burner. I think Antonio Hart is on this one along with a Japanese rhythm section that really holds its own. Good stuff. I'm also partial to an early Harper Brothers albums called "Artistry". They do a kick ass version of "Yessir, That's My Baby" on that one. Other than that, not too much from The Young Lions movement continues to resonate. Up over and out.
