Beloved supporting roles on TV (or in film)...
Dave James replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
There's really only one supporting actor who matters: Up over and out. -
Or alternatively, "Don't let it hit you where the Good Lord split you." Up over and out.

I like 'em. Got interested in what they were doing when I got seriously into the Dead about two years back. I only have their box set called "Hampton Comes Alive". Some pretty good jam band stuff on that one. Give them credit for not overstaying their welcome, although I have a feeling we'll be seeing plenty more live Phish over the coming years. They were obsessive about taping their live shows. Up over and out.

I have nothing but kind things to say about Tina Brooks. He's the guy who really got me interested in mainstream jazz. Up over and out.

Got this one a couple of weeks ago, but I've only listened to it once. I had a fairly positive reaction to it, but it was on a Saturday afternoon and was not what I'd call a CLE (Concentrated Listening Event), i.e. lots of distractions. I need to give a a few more spins and pay closer attention. Up over and out.

I rarely watched Hee Haw, but I can tell you that Roy Clark in his prime was about as good a picker as you'll ever see. Upright Bill - I'm with you on the Lawrence Welk reruns. They're on here in Portland at 6:00 on Saturday nights. If I'm around, I tune in. Not unlike Hee Haw, you have to be willing to tolerate the chaff (and there's plenty of that) to get to the wheat. But, if you're like me, you know that when Larry decided to put down the hammer, that band of his could flat out swing. Up over and out.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Mulligan CJB. This weekend it was Anita O'Day. Up over and out. -
Electric blues and the Grateful Dead. Up over and out.

I'm still waiting for news on the biopic with Jim Carey playing Chet Baker. Up over and out.

As Gunther Tooty from "Car 54 Where Are You" used to say. "Ooh...ooh...jumpin' Jehosafat." A Hall Select sounds like the finest of ideas to moi. I'm sure they'll tap into some Pacific Jazz material when they put this one together. Up over and out.

Ed's reference to the AAJ reminded me of their other end game smackdown. Remember after the BNBB had been down for quite some time, they redirected folks who were checking in to two other boards, neither of which was Organnissimo? Now you know they had to have been aware of this community, so why the slight? I'm guessing it was probably ecomomically driven in some way, shape or form, but I still thought it was pretty cold. BTW, Ed, good to see you posting again. Up over and out.

I wonder if someone like Tom Evered ever laments the fate of the late BNBB. Just from the standpoint of hosting the board, they would seem to have had gained so much in terms of differentiating their brand from everyone else. Not to mention the advertising / promotional bump from having so many people pass through their site to get to the board. They essentially told everyone who had been so loyal for so long to go fuck themselves. I didn't understand it then and I don't understand it now, but they lost something that's irretrievable in the process. Much is the pity. By the way, the BNBB-E is a total waste of time. Chuck, Hope you have a great day today. Thanks for being an O.B. contributor. Nothing like an insider's perspective. Up over and out.

Dean Martin. I have everything he ever recorded on four Bear Family box sets. Up over and out.

Kevin, First of all, I'm glad to see you posting here again. Second, call Michael C. immediately and see if there's anything he can do. I've had a Jones for these recordings for so long I can't even remember when it started. I can tell you one thing...36 hour Levitra can't hold a candle to what I'm going through. Up over and out.

What is wrong with these thimblebrains at Concord? They are sitting on three (3) Richie Kamuca albums with no sign whatsoever that they intend to reissue them at any point in the near (of far) future. With some of the crap they sling around, you'd think they'd have time for this. Wish there was some way Mosaic could license these recordings. Boy, would they make for a nice Select or what? Throw in "Tenors Head On" to round things out and away you go. Up over and out.

If you could only buy one of the Vee-Jays
Dave James replied to John Tapscott's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Rooster - God do I love that kind of logic. The world is full of good women, but good jazz that's going OOP? It's simply a matter of priorities, and getting them straight. Up over and out. -
Dusty Groove lists three upcoming Lafitte CD reissues. All were to have been issued in "late May" but have been...hold onto your hats...delayed. Titles are: Blues in Summertime Jambo Sugar & Spice Could this be the new Barney Wilen? Up over and out.

Killer Joe from Hot Stuff is Killer Barbara. One of the first B-3 recordings that captured my attention. Here's a nice pic from the AMG website. She can push my bass pedals anytime she wants. Up over and out.

Pittsfield uncovers earliest written reference to
Dave James replied to Johnny E's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I saw this too. Interesting article. Reminds me of the controversy that's still raging in Canada about the birthplace of ice hockey. Not sure if this really detracts from the Doubleday legacy. As was pointed out in the article, Cooperstown is the place where Doubleday is said to have come up with the rules for the MODERN game. I don't think anyone has any idea how the game was being played when the Pittsfield document was written. Doubleday may very well still be responsible for the game as we know it today. Joe - You're right about the piano. It sounds "tinny" to me. I thought it might just be the quality of the instrument itself...Lord knows any pianist is at the mercy of the house 88, but you may be correct that it's really a miking / recording issue. Up over and out.

When I was a kid, my brother and I spent about six summers toggling between Evanston and Western Springs, Illinois while our Mom got her Masters at Northwestern. One of thsoe Summers corresponded with the arrival of the 17 locusts. I will never forget that as long as I live. Guess I'm glad I live in Ogygone. Up over and out.

Andrew Hill "Mosaic Select" SPECULATION thread...

Cool! Up over and out. -
Jim, There used to be a funky jazz record stop in the vicinity of the old Kingdome called Bud's Records. Someone who lives in the Queen City might be able to supply additional details or info as to whether Bud's is still even in business. It's been years since I was there. The Boeing Museum of Flight is just a little south of Seattle. Not sure if this is the kind of thing that puts wind in your sails, but I found it pretty interesting. If you do go to Pike Place, don't miss the Pike Place Fish Market. That's the place that's world famous for fish throwing. It's pretty entertaining. A brief cautionary note. Be prepared for some of the worst freeway traffic you'll ever run into. Seattle is the poster child for lack of infrastructural planning. Oh, one other thing...while you're there, you won't want for coffee. Up over and out.

Dan - Let me know what you think if you pick this one up. Sal - I have not heard the Harper disc you mentioned. The only other exposure I have to Winard is via the first CD he and his brother put out about 10 years ago called "Artistry". I thought that that was a good enough freshman effort that the two would be heard from again, but they really dropped off the radar. So, I just don't have enough information to recommend one CD over the other. For what it's worth, I must say I'd be surprised if "A Time For The Soul" outshone "Come Into The Light". It's that good. Up over and out.
