  1. Even if you're not a Yankee fan, you have to appreciate this. One of the things I most admire about MLB is that it doesn't forget its past whether that past was 50 years ago or just last season. http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c_id=nyy&content_id=20574611&topic_id=26446990
  2. A whole 6 games? This kind of stressin' leads to heart attacks. A-Rod goes yard in his first AB against the Angels today. Guess I'll just ignore that pain in my left arm and the shortness of breath.
  3. Through six games, the Yankees 3-4-5 hitters (Cano, Rodriguez and Teixeira) have zero RBI's and a combined batting average of .208. Wow.
  4. Saxophonist Hal McKusick passed away this week. One of the many unsung heroes in jazz. The guy was everywhere. His album Cross Section Saxes is a classic. Hal was 87 and died of complications that arose from a hip fracture.
  5. From what I'm hearing, Weber will be fined but not suspended for the Zetterberg incident last night. For a league that likes to pride itself on concern for player safety, that's a joke. Weber should be sitting Friday night.
  6. The first Philadelphia goal that began the Flyers comeback was scored by Danny Briere on a play that was offsides by at least a yard. How the linesman could have missed that call is beyond me. It wasn't even close. The Wing's loss was not unexpected. They've been a terrible road team all year and now that they don't have home ice advantage, it's going to be a tough row to hoe. I'm curious what discipline the league will mete out to Shea Weber who deliberately tried to injure Henrik Zetterberg at the end of the game by slamming his head into the glass behind the Nashville net. He got a two minute minor that should have been five, but to me, and not speaking as a Wing's fan, that warrants a one game suspension.
  7. Check out this picture. You may recognize the guy third from the left along with the guy in the combat fatigues. Guess this is OK.
  8. I have a Japanese copy of Walter Benton's Out Of This World, so that one has been out on CD before. Benton is a guy you need to hear if you haven't run into him before. His sound is somewhat reminiscent of the so-called "roundness" that characterizes Hank Mobley. Having bought this CD without listening to it, I can recall being very pleased with the session when I first heard it.
  9. If you're going to do a seance, get Duke.
  10. If this had happened anywhere else, it might have raised a little dust but not much more. Ozzie's not very good at editing himself and probably never will be, but with a population of Cuban ex-pats the size of the one in Miami, he should have known better. Frankly, I don't think the team had much choice. They had to do something.
  11. In 27 post-season games with the Yankees, Teixeira has three home runs, 12 RBI's and a batting average of .170.
  12. Petrified, mortified, mystified, stupefied. All is well. The last time the Yanks started a season 0-3, they went on to win 114 games and the World Series.
  13. NIce to see the Yankees off to another great start. Poor managing, poor starting pitching, worse relief pitching and untimely hitting have combined for a flaccid 0-2 beginning to the 2012 campaign. Glad the slimmed down and trimmed up Mark Teixeira is off on the right foot, batting a cool .000 after six official plate appearances. Maybe he should look more seriously into that bunting idea he espoused during Spring training. Between him and A-Rod, the Yanks are on the hook for an awful lot of money for the production they could easily be getting out of guys who cost about 20% of what they're paying these two. Hopefully, the new look Phil Hughes can pull us up by our own bootstraps tomorrow afternoon. Leaving Tampa 0-3 would be unacceptable. I am unhappy. I am disgruntled. Not to the level of unhappy, disgruntled Dan, but damn friggin' close.
  14. Hopefully, ones that aren't put together yet.
  15. Perfect.
  16. Hate to see anyone check out that early, but I haven't a clue as to what anyone saw in his work. At best, it was no more than kitsch. RIP anyhow.
  17. My favorite Getz by a fair margin is In Sweden 1958-60 on Dragon Records. Here's the set list and the players: Honeysuckle Rose - They Can't Take That Away From Me - Topsy - Celebrating (Janne's Blues) - Cabin In The Sky - Like Someone In Love - Speak Low - Stockholm Street - Bengt's Blues - Gold Rush - Celebrating - Stairway To The Stars - Jordu - Ah-Moore - Just You, Just Me - I Remember Clifford - Night In Tunisia - Just A Child - Lover Come Back To Me Personel: Stan Getz tenor sax; Benny Bailey trumpet; Åke Persson trombone; Erik Norström or Bjarne Nerem tenor sax; Lars Gullin baritone sax; Jan Johansson or Bengt Hallberg or Bosse Söderman piano; Gunnar Johnson or Georg Riedel or Torbjörn Hultcrantz bass; William Schiöpffe or Joe Harris or Ed Thigpen or Sune Spångberg drums Getz's solo on Stairway to the Stars is jaw dropping. The tone he teases from his tenor is other worldly...almost vaporous. Saxophone playing at its very finest. Here's a video of Getz performing I Remember Clifford recorded in Copenhagen:
  18. John Tortorella, the Ranger's coach, is not happy with the Penguins as a team or an organization. This interview followed the game last night between the two clubs that included a knee to knee hit courtesy of one of the dirtier players in the league, Brooks Orpik. I'll say one thing. There are certainly going to be some interesting match-ups in the early rounds of the SCP.
  19. Harrison's son looks a little like Russell Brand.
  20. People who don't like The Killing complain that it moves too slowly. I'd call it deliberate. I'm totally hooked on this. It's obvious at this point that the roots of this conspiracy run pretty deep. Bring it on. Nice to see Mark Moses ("Duck" Phillips from Mad Men) making an appearance as the new Lieutenant.
  21. Speaking of Canadian teams, Phoenix will be in Quebec next season.
  22. One year at the original Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, Freddie Hubbard was a no-show. Another year at the same festival, Ella Fitzgerald cancelled due to illness.
  23. After watching the Pens and Flyers get after each other yesterday, that has to be the first round match-up with the most potential. I've pretty much resigned myself to my Red Wings not making much noise this year, so I'll have to get my jollies elsewhere.
