  1. Here's the only thing I could locate on Google. Interesting that you can purchase an "online" copy as well as the physical product. JAZZ ON THE CHEAP: Reviews, Controversies, & Miscellaneous Musings About Jazz Records by Lynn E. McCutcheon, Ed. D. features reviews of & controversies about rare & unusual jazz records (non-vocal bop, post bop, mainstream) made between 1945 & 1985. Focuses on albums un-cited or inadequately described in jazz price guides. $7.00 + $2.95 shipping & handling for paperback (8.5 X 11, 158 pgs., 2010), or $4.00 for an online copy. To order, email the author at najp@embarqmail.com.
  2. I'm in this for the music and the music on this one is transcendent. I have both the Taylor CD's but of the two, Pendulum is clearly the keeper. Of course the fact that he died at such a young age and left such a tiny recorded legacy has to make these outings all the more valuable.
  3. Will someone please explain to me why Mark Tiexiera is still batting fifth in the Yankee lineup. He's 0-fer again tonight against Tampa Bay and his average (.212) is now officially below the Mendoza line. I know Joe Girardi is a home on the range guy (never is heard a discouraging word) but c'mon man, either sit this guy down or drop him the at least 7th in the order. He's just taking up space.
  4. Well, it's official. Note the time. I cannot get A Night Like This out of my head. Thanks a bunch.
  5. Some nice stuff here. This clip of a tune called Harlequin Bounce features Benny Carter and Britt Woodman. Also in the band, among others, are Wardell Gray, Marshall Royal and Gerald Wiggins.
  6. To put this in a musical context, it's like selling a box set that cost you $100 for $50 and then turning around and buying another box set for $100 and convincing yourself that it only cost $50.
  7. Ward, I'm worried about the Cleaver.
  8. Has there ever been a player who was more fun to watch? Just seeing that film of him recklessly darting around the bases, arms waving, hat flying off his head...the sheer joy he took in doing something as well as anyone ever has done it. Talk about your five tool player. They broke the mold after they made Willie.
  9. Agreed. Blue Note is a concept. It no longer exists. If anyone is at all conflicted about this, just try to imagine Mssrs. Lion and Wolff releasing a Norah Jones recording.
  10. Absolutely love these guys. Great deadpan...taking themselves so seriously when everyone else around them was dissolving in laughter. Rooney's point about the pair is right on the mark. The whole being greater than the sum of its parts. It's unfortunate that this sort of subtle, well-considered, non-scatological humor seems to have run its course. I'll bet if you played a couple of B&R routines for a twenty something, they'd look at you like you'd taken leave of your senses.
  11. He was/is the consummate professional. In a town and a lineup filled with seekers of the limelight, he just went about his business. Easily the best there's ever been and perhaps the best there ever will be. We should consider ourselves fortunate to have seen him work.
  12. And the hits just keep on coming. First Pineda, now Mo. Rivera has a torn ACL. This could very well mark the end of his career. He's 42 and this was probably his last year anyway. What a way to end it. Screwing around in the outfield.
  13. Seems to me I read that one of the Cowsills is part of the band that's backing the Beach Boys on their 50th anniversary tour.
  14. FWIW. I like this gal a lot.
  15. You're certainly paying for the upgrade, but the sample tracks I previewed sounded awfully good to me.
  16. She looks like an old shoe. Child protective services should be seriously considering removing the daughter from her custody.
  17. Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon were all over the concussion aspect of this on Pardon The Interruption yesterday, so it's not like ESPN is ignoring the possibility. With respect to the future of the game, I'm not sure the NFL has much control over that. Critical mass will be reached when parents decide that they don't want their kids putting themselves at risk by playing the game. Once that starts to happen, it's only a matter of time before the well runs dry.
  18. No, what the NFL cannot afford is to continue covering up what they knew about head trauma injuries and their failure to act on that information, all for the sake of business and profits. FWIW, that's what I was trying to say. There's going to come a time in the not too distant future when the NFL is going to have to answer for their willingness to sweep such a terrible problem under the carpet. A class action suit is brewing that I think may threaten the very existence of the league. I'll bet the lawyers are schooling up like piranha to represent the plaintiffs.
  19. Hope this doesn't turn out to be head trauma related. The NFL can ill-afford too many more of those...especially when we're talking big name players like Seau who aren't very old. Crossing my fingers that this isn't the case. Hope his family can find their way through this. Addendum: I did not know this, but when former Chicago Bear Dave Duerson shot himself in the chest, he did so deliberately to ensure that his brain would remain intact. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but the fact that Seau also shot himself in the chest is very troubling.
  20. Just wondering if there's a past tense in the English language for Blue Note? How about WasBlue Note.
  21. Scott Wenzel told me the Webb/Fitzgerald won't be released until late 2012. Is Mosaic still not charging for pre-orders until they actually ship? I know they didn't in the past, but when their financials are not as strong as they may have once been, that would be a way to maintain some cash flow.
  22. If you like Teddy Pendergrass, check out Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. Before he went out on his own, Pendergrass was one of their lead singers. IMO, his work with Melvin far outstrips his later solo efforts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1q0Po-KCsg Also, spend some time with one of the lesser known smooth soul artists who's right up there with the best of them, Leroy Hutson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG_UtvC9JdM
