  1. Personal feelings? Screw that; I'm more than happy that he's not in a Falcons uniform, I don't care how good he is. I hear you. I'm as conflicted as I can be. I've been a serious Eagles fan since I saw them play an exhibition game here in Portland back in 1959, so not rooting for them is not an option. On the other hand, I'm a dog lover and MIchael Vick is a dog abuser. Not a good combination. I guess I've agreed with myself to try and separate the man from the football player. Maybe that's the chicken s**t way around it, but it is what it is. Also, with respect to Donovan McNabb's new contract, it may not be as bad as it first sounded. Turns out if Washington releases him, they owe "only" $3.75 million. I'm guessing the Skins pick their QB of the future in this year's draft, keep McNabb around for a year or two to break the new guy in and then cut him loose. If that's their plan they'd be very smart if they back end loaded the deal, but I haven't seen anything about that.

  3. All these shows are re-done in high definition. The one from August 13, 1975 is stellar. Even Donna Jean sounds good and Jerry and Bobby are both in fine vocal form. They do a couple of very different jams after "Drums" on each of the two sets Each is superb. Seriously, this is some of the better live Dead I've yet heard. I"m looking forward to getting into the two earlier sets from '68 and '71 that both feature Mr. Pen.
  4. Bet Redskin fans everywhere are hitting their knees over Donovan McNabb's new $78 million, five year deal ($40 million guaranteed). I have no idea how Daniel Synder made his money. He's an idiot. Needless to say, being an Eagle fan, tonight's game is as good as it can possibly get. Vick's QB rating at the end of the third quarter was 150.2. That's off the charts. I dislike Vick too, but you've got to admire him as a football player, if not as a person.
  5. One more vote for this iteration, but must respectively disagree with Lon when it comes to Blakey as a drummer. The only other guy who pushed a band like Blakey was Shelly Manne. Both are very high on my list of favorites,
  6. Here's another one some of you may enjoy, an interpretation of Don't Go To Strangers w/ Paul Weller. Nice sax solo just before the 3:00 mark. This is a little later in the game (2008) when it looks like things might have started coming apart. My link I really think this gal is a talent. Too bad she can't handle it.
  7. Frank (The B-SIdes)
  8. Jim, The tenor player is a guy by the name of Phil Veacock.
  9. Not bad: My link
  10. Agree with those who recommend listening to a piece of music with which you're very familiar. If you know what to expect musically, you can concentrate on the quality of the reproduction. A couple of other thoughts: Don't fall into the trap of believing that a system will sound the same in your house as it does in the store. Stereo shops have rooms that are specifically designed to reproduce the best possible sound. To compensate for this, some places will actually let you take a system home with you with the right to return it if it doesn't measure up. Also, take note of where in the showroom the speakers are positioned. The closer to a corner, the better they will sound. Lastly, be careful about the sales guy pushing one brand over another. Retailers strike different deals with different manufacturers so their profit margins can vary.
  11. How can you not love Jack Webb? As nearly as I can tell, he didn't have a scintilla of acting ability, but he parlayed what he did have into a pretty successful career. Of course, he was also married to Julie London and was a hard core jazz fanatic. He even used trumpeter Jack Shelton in a number of Dragnet 1970 episodes. Here's another clip of Webb a slightly less serious vein. Watch how he almost cracks up towards the end of the skit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pWBJiW0Xpo

  13. JIm, I think you're making a major mistake by not traveling to San Francisco and selling these on a per peanut basis.
  14. Great video. Thanks for posting it. One pet peeve. If I never saw another audience sing-along, it would be way too soon. I've never understood what drives performers to solicit assistance from those who are least able to provide it. There's a reason you're on stage and they're not. Deal with it!
  15. Among studio backed, "mainstream" movies, two card carrying clinkers that come to mind are Popeye with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall and Jet Pilot with John Wayne and Janet Leigh. The latter was so bad, it was filmed in 1950 and not released until 1957.
  16. I just ordered this and I thought some of you old salts who grew up with the San Francisco sound might find it of interest. I had the good fortune to see the Jefferson Airplane twice in their mid to late '60's hey day. Mighty fine stuff. I still think Marty Balin had one of the great underrated voices in the history of rock. http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/memorabilia/jefferson-airplane-live-box-set.html?utm_source=NL&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=101102
  17. Have we defined what constitutes a "hit" record?
  18. Take Five - Dave Brubeck. More - Kai Winding (not a jazz tune, but a jazz musician). Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White - Perez Prado. Agree with Van Basten II. Outside of the big band era, if any jazz guy had a hit, you can bet the farm it only happened once.
  19. I bought the CD in question several years ago right before I locked myself in a room for a week to kick my Dusty Groove habit. Glad I got it. Very nice. Steve Kuhn is one of those guys who kind of flies underneath the radar. Too bad. As they used to say in Downbeat, an artist deserving of wider recognition.
  20. I couldn't count time if my life depended on it, but I know good music when I hear it. Asia Minor is good music. Perhaps my favorite Dizzy Reece recording. If you haven't heard it, you need to hear it.
  21. I've had a jones for this recording for the last year. I've bid on it a couple of times on eBay to no avail. I've never heard anything on it, but I am a fan of Satie's music. If anyone has this, what do you think? IYO, is it worth having considering the $25 to $35 freight?
  22. About the only thing that's missing is a certificate of authenticity. That would close the deal for me.
  23. Klaatu Barada Nicto!
  24. Powering down. See you guys next season.
  25. Congratulations to fans of both the Rangers and the Giants. They both deserve to be where they are. I just hope both teams can continue to play at the same high level they've been at for the last week. That would make for an entertaining and exciting World Series.
