  1. I don't *think* (could well be wrong) that's the original cover, which, IIRC, is composed of individual black and white photos of the quartet; the Tatum and Webster images being the largest. Edit: not quite an accurate description...I'll post it if I can figure out how!
  2. Manfred Mann Manfred Eicher Manfred Schoof
  3. Misha Bennink Honsinger wish they were playing here!
  4. Thanks! ...and I promise I'll stop going on about it , but Muhal absolutely SMOKES on that Clifford Jordan track. DAMN!!!!!!
  5. Haven't even heard of Terry Adams, so I googled and found a link to this release (bottom of the page). Samples do sound insane. I'll get it, I guess. Insane just about says it. 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' on the same gig as a Ra tune says it all as well! Actually, Adams plays some nice piano on here - even if it's something of a novelty album, I guess.
  6. I never came across these books
  7. Beautiful. Wish we had more snow here!
  8. Great downhill race. Rahlves and Miller disappointed, I think it's fair to say. Which is to take NOTHING away from Deneriaz, who seemed to have a similar margin between him and 2nd to that between 2nd and about 6th/7th! Men's halfpipe was fun, too.
  9. There's plenty of live Tatum out there. I highly recommend "God Is In the House" originally on Muse, currently on High Note. I don't have mine to hand - but if anyone knows offhand, is the GIITH material duplicated on the Tatum Chronological Classics?
  10. Percy Sledge Edge Djibril Cisse
  11. Steve McQueen Peter King Peter Pan
  12. This album is simply stunning. Webster is a perfect foil for Tatum, and they both seem to me to be on top form. All of the Tatum group sessions are fantastic IMHO. A particular favourite is the trio session - also with Red Callender on bass, but this time Jo Jones, not Bill Douglass, on cans.
  13. Thanks for all these recommendations! I also have the All-Star Game on Eremite, which is enoyable. Always good to hear Marshall Allen...Has anyone heard that album of duets between Allen and Terry Adams? Crazy!
  14. I'm not sure I get the distinction... I think Lee is the better brass player, I think KD is the superior musical thinker. Got it (and agree)!
  15. I've been listening to Vista a lot recently as well, and think it's great. What do people here make of the Alan Silva ESP? I had it on earlier, and I'm a big fan! Also, where should I go next with Silva?
  16. Been re-reading bits of this lately (something in itself - I'm definitely not one for re-reading things in general) - and I stick by what I said earlier. It's amazing stuff
  17. I'm not sure I get the distinction...
  18. I'd be very interested in this - I'd have thought it could work very well indeed.
  19. They are crazy! Some nice noises, though. Hearing various minor chords reminded me of a piece Yehudi Menuhin published in the British press a few years back, complaining that ambulance sirens should surely oscillate between notes a major, rather than the customary minor, third apart.
  20. As you point out, apples and oranges to an extent. As for a personal favourite (and my knowledge is far from extensive), I'll go for Clifford Brown at Birdland. IMHO, 'Once in a While' is one of the great recorded ballad performances.
  21. It's difficult to know what the purpose of definition might be (is it a peculiarly Anglo-American impulse, by the way?) The responses here suggest that it's one of those 'family resemblance' phenomena. We have a number of definitions which seem good in most cases, although no universalisable definitions, etc. etc. etc.
  22. I think this is part of what John Cage was getting at.
  23. Charles Munch Chu Berry Elder Eatmore Lamont Young Norman Lamont Spiny Norman
  24. $100+??? ...in which case, I might sit tight. Plenty of other music out there I don't know yet. Too much to be spending that money.
  25. Thanks for that! The revelation to me was Kenny Barron on track two. Wonderful.
