Where are these remaining record stores with a sizable jazz department? Seriously, I would like to know. I have recently visited some of the big name stores of the past and noticed that they do not have a very large selection any more. In Amsterdam there is Concerto, good for the whole spectrum from classical to jazz to rock. They also have a good second hand section. Basically, it's four or five interconnected stores in the Utrechtsestraat near Rembrandt Square. In The Hague there is the Jazz Center, just jazz like the names says. Concerto has been selling more low quality PD releases of classic albums over the past decade, but they are still pretty good, though not as good as they used to be, but perhaps that is also a reflection of the dwindling number of worthwhile new releases by reputable record labels and discs going OOP.

Destination-out.com?

Yes, the Penguin Guide is full of praise for the whole set, calling Alms/ Tiergarten (Spree) monumental. Recently I came across a different opinion on Allmusic (Thom Jurek). His review for the collaboration with Louis Moholo opens as follows: "Much of the music Cecil Taylor made during his month-long stay in Berlin was truly worthwhile and reinvigorating for him as an artist, some of it was just ho hum, a little of it was pretty much garbage, and a very small amount was so brilliant it ranked near the pinnacle of his long and well-documented career. " (Remembrance was not counted among the ho hum or garbage by him.) I do remember reading some negative comments about Thom Jurek here, so perhaps that quote is a minority opinion. -

How is Alms/Tiergarten (Spree)? All I've heard are the two short samples on Allmusic, and there's not been much discussion of it on Organissimo. -
I HATE these sets. They are ruining the few remaining record stores with a sizeable jazz department. If you absolutely need to hear music that is otherwise unavailable, why not use bittorrent as a temporary stopgap?

Likewise I've only got the 1958 in it's first CD incarnation. I'm game for all periods of MIles. As long as they keep coherence and quality going I'll surely continue to go for these Bootleg sets. A great 35 1/2 minutes performance from the Isle of Wight festival makes Bitches Brew Live worth getting even if the first three tracks from Newport '69 will be reissued on the Bootleg Series Vol.4. At £4.99 you get one of the very best electric Miles recordings officially released.

This thread is a good example of what most discussions of music here end up being. Very entertaining and I do enjoy reading, so please continue, but I'll stick, hopefully understandably so, to posting about CD releases and sound quality, information that helps me build a more satisfying music library. -
Is anyone here familiar with this book.
-
A slap in the face of those who bought the three disc (2 CD + 1 DVD) Legacy edition extracted from the 40th Anniversary set.
-
Is it too much to hope the '66 and '67 performances on disc 2 will be in stereo?
-
There are other lightweight acts like Chaka Khan and Lionel Richie who will undoubtedly get a handsome paycheque. I don't fancy my money disappearing into their pockets.
-
What a knockout! Think I'll pass.

That one is hard to locate on CD for a reasonable price, unlike some of the other solo albums on FMP. -
Newport '69 was only released on CD, Bitches Brew Live, along with Isle of Wight. It wasn't part of the Isle of Wight concert film (Miles Electric: A Different Kind Of Blue). Newport '69 is just three tracks without Wayne Shorter, who was stuck in traffic.

You're right, Lon: A four-disc set of live recordings, it traces the history of Davis’s concerts at the various Newport Festivals — in Newport, R.I., as well as in Berlin; Dietikon, Switzerland; and New York City. (About three-quarters of the tracks have not been commercially released.)

The 1955 (how long ?) and 1969 (just the three previously released tracks ?) performances probably fit on one disc. That leaves three discs for the 1975 material? Strange. Squares will be thrilled.

Cecil Taylor - Jazz Advance (Blue Note, CDP 7 84462 2) Cecil Taylor - Looking Ahead! (Universal Japan, UCCO-9966), SHM-CD from 2011 with DSD mastering from 2007. Long OOP, but luckily Amazon Japan had one copy left in stock. My first Cecil Taylor album was Looking (Berlin Version) The Feel Trio, and for years Nefertiti was the earliest Taylor album in my collection, until I got the Candid Mosaic box last year. The majority of my favourite Cecil Taylor recordings are still on FMP. Some of the FMPs are still available in ever dwindling quantities as new old stock from German sellers on (mostly) Discogs, and I have been happily adding several to my collection since signing up to Discogs, the latest being Regalia with Paul Lovens.

On CD as Thelonious Monk Piano Solo (Vogue, BMG France, 1996). discogs How does the Japanese remaster compare to the Jazz on Disques Vogue box? SICP 3980 is indeed quite a bit better than the black Vogue BMG France digipak. A no-brainer at ¥1000.
-
Kevin, any word on whether the Blue Note and Prestige SHM series will continue in the future?

I had that thought too. But then that leaves a title like The Song of Singing in question. Was it ever an RVG or 24bit TOCJ? 1998 BN Works (TOCJ-4353) and 2004 (24bit ?).
-
It doesn't make much sense, but Universal Japan have done it before. In 2011, alongside the newly mastered late Coltrane Impulse SHM CDs, they release a batch of budget titles with 20bit K2 masterings. These K2 masterings had already been replaced once by 24bit 96kHz masterings in the early 2000s. There was no overlap in material between SHM and budget releases. They complemented each other like the BN SHMs and the July 2015 batch.

And no bonus tracks. Kenny Burrell's Five Spot date, and Una Mas, for example, benefit from their bonus tracks. Since there no bonus tracks, does that mean these are older remasterings being recycled? If so, does that no more CDs of the new Bernie Grundman digital transfers will be issued? It was mentioned upthread that the Duke Pearson Sweet Honey Bee SHM CD may be from a tape source instead of a needle drop. Has anyone confirmed this? The Bernie Grundman transfers released on HD Tracks lack bonus tracks. On the other hand, nowhere does Universal Japan mention these Blue Note The Finest 1100 discs are 24bit 192kHz masterings. Perhaps a photo of the obi of an actual CD will provide an answer.
