  1. Defense was an embarrassment for both sides. With reasonably good finishing, the match could have been 10-9. All four U.S. goals can be seen here: http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/us-vs-the-netherlands-general-postgame-thread-r.2020824/page-3#post-32356581 The Dutch defense on two of them was obviously terrible. On the John Brooks goal in particular, it's astonishing to watch what the defenders were doing. The Woods goal also featured very poor defending. I have a feeling that Hiddink will make improvements for when it's time to play meaningful games. You should have seen Hiddink mumbling and fidgeting in front of the interviewer's camera on Dutch television at the start of this qualifying campaign. Changing back and forth between Van Gaal's World Cup 3-5-2 and the traditional 4-3-3 during the time of the first friendlies and qualifiers. It was embarrassing and frustrating to watch. Even an idiot like me who has never hit a ball straight in his life could see where this was headed and that confused geezer Hiddink was not the right man for the job.
  2. Guus Hiddink finally had the good sense to fuck off.
  3. Keep The Bugs Off Your Glass And The Bears Off Your Ass as well as this explanation in the CD booklet:"The Bad Plus is from the land of 18-wheelers, and this one is for truckers everywhere."
  4. I'm sure he thinks he did a splendid job.
  5. I watched the first episode twice and need to watch episode two again. I nodded off during both episodes. Nicely textured visuals although the constant use of aerial footage between scenes is wearing a bit thin. My main problem is it's very murky nature, mood over substance is all well and good but shouldn't outstay it's welcome at the expense of some forward moving narrative. I'm looking forward to episode three to see how they are going to resolve that final scene. The critics were given access to the first three episodes for their previews and were overall lukewarm in their response, so I don't expect the narrative to improve until after.
  6. True Detective season 2. My negative comments on first seeing episode 1 have been deleted in the software upgrade. I watched the season premiere again followed by yesterday's episode, this time at night with the lights out, and I'm still not convinced this is going someplace interesting. It does look pretty.
  7. I never really got into Page One. Bought it after I had been listening to Inner Urge, and In n Out. I finally ordered Our Thing after years of procrastination. I'm really looking forward to it, as I'm on a Kenny Dorham kick at the moment. Page One seemed tame to me as well, although the lifeless RVG mastering didn't help. I now think it's a great record from start to finish.
  8. Listening now. Stereo! The U.S. Labson digipack edition is squashed into near-mono in comparison. Still, this new (re)reissue doesn't sound spectacular. Might be the limitations in the original recording, I'm not sure, but whoever remastered this Japanese edition seemingly didn't know what to do with the bass. It sounds boosted to me. Max's drums sound good, but are deeply recessed. I have to imagine this was a frustrating project, recording-wise, for both Roach and Thiele. Max Roach - It's Time (UCCI 9255) This is a reissue of the 20bit K2 remaster by Shigeo Miyamoto and Tamaki Beck. The same team who did the Prestige, New Jazz, and Riverside 20bit K2s (US and Japan). Most titles from this series not included in the 2011 SHM batch seem to be 20bit K2 reissues. I find these K2s to be a mixed bag, especially the Impulse! titles. For example, Excession and Kulu Se Mama (2000 Kevin Revees US digipak is better). The Japanese mini-lp of Thelonious Himself on Riverside is especially bad.
  9. I haven't heard it yet, but I imagine Art Blakey's Mosaic must be among those. On the RVG Wayne Shorter sounds like he is playing through a piece of crêpe paper on the title track (compared to the 1989 McMaster). Free For All I have heard, and it is a definite improvement over the pumped up RVG. It's shit like that that I hate about the RVGs, but most people choose to be deaf to it and get all righteous when Van Gelder's 24bit remastering work is criticized.
  10. Listening to the SHM-CD now. I share your dislike of the RVG. I used to prefer the BN Works to the RVG, but the SHM has a more full bodied sax sound. Incidentally, the RVG has a wider stereo image than the 1989 McMaster, which I read somewhere was near mono, but not as wide as the BN Works and SHM.
  11. Worth a mention:
  12. I think 'The Good Wife' is better. Currently watching season 5. NBC cancelled Hannibal.
  13. Cecil Taylor Unit - It Is In The Brewing Luminous (hatART, 1989)
  14. Sonny Rollins - Tour De Force (OJC)
  15. I didn't promise this particular Miles digipak uses a heavier cardboard. I bet it is indistinguishable except for the made in EU fine print and the possible absence of an FBI warning logo.
  16. No. English liner notes. Only a made in EU line on the discs and back cover art. As for packaging differences? I believe the EU digipaks from the 90s Impulse! Master Sessions used thicker cardboard. So much for American exceptionalism.
  17. IMO this one and the later Blue Note Village Vanguard Twofer are his best live recordings. I know lots of people love "State of the Tenor," but for me the playing sounds too constrictive -- I'm not convinced Joe is really into all of the material selected for him, the tunes are atypically short compared to Joe's best playing in those days and the sound mix for me doesn't work: not nearly enough Foster in the balance and way too much bass (that's an LP impression; if that's been fixed on CD, somebody tell me...). In any case there were some European live concerts of similar vintage that I prefer, especially "An Evening with Joe Henderson" (Red). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMkkqphwI-k&list=PLF06EF13D310BE710 The recent SHM-CDs reveal much more of Al Foster's playing. 18. I have a problem with seeing some actors as embodying the role they are playing, and Colin Farrell is one of them. I hope he will be more to me than Colin Farrell with a moustache this time.
  19. My favourite tea. Ambootia Royal First Flush. I drink more than a litre of Darjeeling tea a day, mostly regular first flush, as the tea I'm drinking now is only available in the spring and is twice as expensive.
  20. Tonight, Hannibal season 3 episode 3. Still the best show on television.
  21. A US style gun culture is also no prerequisite to mass murder. Hate is more elemental, for instance hatred of the kafir (infidel).
  22. "Insanity" means that the person either could not control their behavior, or they could not distinguish right from wrong due to mental illness. From all accounts, this individual was focused, determined and in full control of his actions. We tend to identify such people and their actions as "insane", "monstrous" or "pure evil" in order to protect and distance ourselves from the harsh reality that tragedies like this are the result of the fear, ignorance and hatred of those who believe they are losing their ability to exert power and control in our society. A psychiatric diagnosis is not a prerequisite for mass murder, nor does such a diagnosis make one generally more inclined to commit (mass) murder. If every killer with a certain number of sociopathic personality traits was declared insane, hardly anyone would get convicted for murder, and instead most would be institutionalised. You might with equal right declare all believers in holy books and prophets insane. Popularly mass murderers might be regarded as insane, but this is counterproductive in getting people to understand what a certain psychiatric diagnosis means for a person's personality and behaviour.
  23. the japanese RVG TOCJ-9104 is excellent .... That's the mini-lp? I have the 2008 jewel case edition, TOCJ-7147.
  24. I believe you do not have to pay VAT if you export to the US, so it should be cheaper than ordering from amazon.com. Put the item in your cart and initiate the checkout process to see what kind of a deal you get.
  25. Yes, in Europe (only with copy control technology), and in Japan. The new budget release is most likely the RVG. I own the Connoisseur, BN Works, and JRVG, and prefer the latter. It's one of the few RVGs I enjoy.
