From his post 1995 output, I like the first trio fascination with Elvin Jones and Dave Holland, and also the two quartet discs with Hank Jones, George Mraz and Paul Motian. And, of course, there's the Paul Motian trio with Bill Frisell. The best Scofield Lovano stuff is the Live Jazz Door bootleg (Scofield lists it on his website's discography, and the Live in Montreal DVD.

Last night, Jopen Adriaan Wit. Jopen beer is brewed in Haarlem's Jopenkerk, which functions as brewery, cafe, and restaurant. -
Here you go: Blocked by discogs. I can see it.

Only 9 posts in the last 26 hours. What's with that, Jim?

Sorry for that.

I don't share Page's enthusiasm for the Dutch language. I only read English language books, watch no Dutch television channels, no radio. I only listen to the BBC (online through a VPN). Get the news off the internet for free. By now my Dutch spelling must be worse than my English spelling, and I couldn't care less. I live here, but have little love for this country.

There is a copy of a Japanese 2CD set of the Atlantis album up on eBay. It contains one extra track, Naima, not on the domestic CD or original LP. Am I correct in assuming this is the only time that track was ever released? (Not that I'm contemplating bidding on this auction.)

Once you've started with Discogs it's a slippery slope - at least that's what I've found Certainly. eBay is a thing of the past for me.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
erwbol replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Do you go to the Bimhuis often? To be honest, this will be my first time. Till last year I never really went to Jazz concerts as all of my friends are in different "scene's" (mostly house, hip-hop and/or the funk/soul/jazz DJ scene), but this year I decided to just go by myself if a great concert comes up. The Braxton concert was also my first visit. I hadn't been to a (jazz) concert since North Sea Jazz 2004 in the Hague. It's a great room and the entrance bridge is spectacular unless you're afraid of heights! -

Some good ones too - the 'Oliver Nelson and Friends' (Hank Jones on funky harpsichord !), the Chico Hamilton 'El Chico', the Archie Shepp 'For Losers' and the McCoy Tyner 'Inception/Reaching Forth'. Sound quality seems very good - should have bought even more of them ! I'm particularly fond of Inception/Reaching Forth. The one I got from this series (Sonny Rollins) sounds good. It was mastered at Eastside Mastering Studios, Berlin. This series was a European initiative? A lot of them are currently €15 for three CDs at amazon.de (about two thirds of the series). Much better than the US Impulse! Originals from a few years earlier (mostly Kevin Reeves). Those were garbage. The sound on these is better than the GRPs (not difficult) and also the digipacksI think. Certainly good enough for my everyday purposes and if I want to treat myself to a 'hi fi' listen then I'll pop a vinyl copy on if I have one (stand by for 'incoming'..). No point in splurging money on imported Japanese CDs.. The text in the booklet confirms that these originate in Germany - Darmstadt Jazz Institut seem to have been involved in the series as does (intriguingly) Dusty Groove ! The McCoy is a great release - two classic LPs. and where else can you hear Ollie Nelson and Hank Jones do a nice cheesy version of 'Winchester Cathedral'? Sure, if I want to hear Sonny Rollins On Impulse! in 'hi fi' then I pop in the hybrid SACD (APO, Kevin Gray) (just €21 incl. shipping). No point in splurging money on even more expensive vinyl of the same APO release. I got the 2-on-1 for There Will Never Be Another You.

If they are like 2014's budget releases (also without bonus tracks) they will disappear a lot sooner than the SHMs.

I got lucky with Musicjapan, an amazon.co.uk third party seller that is also active on amazon.de. Shipping to the Netherlands is cheaper on the Uk site, though. There were a couple of Great Jazz Trio albums (Carter Williams lineup) I had delayed picking up. I had expected these to be available for six months.

Sound is much improved over the GRP edition. Hey, wasn't the awakening also part of the same 2011 SHM series as the Coltranes, and they still used an older mastering for this? That's unexpected. As a result, it's no longer in my shopping cart. Thank you. UCCI 9227(SHM CD) Jamal,Ahmad(p)/The Awakening I know — it's the first time, in my experience, that this series didn't fall back, when it easily could have, on the SHM-CD remaster. I took one for the team! So, a heads-up for the board — I wouldn't recommend UCCI 9282. Try to find the 2011 edition. How is the US/EU 1997 digipak? It is currently only €5 at amazon.de as part of their three for €15 offer.

I really like Myron's playing with Brian Blade Fellowship. I believe I'll look into this one as well, once the ol' wallet recovers.... If only shit stopped disappearing before the wallet had a chance to recover!

Joe Lovano and John Scofield are touring again. A quartet concert has been announced for 11 November 2015 at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Hopefully this leads to another album, studio or live.

Most now OOP at CD Japan and even at hmv.co.jp.

If you know the session already, and like it, you will not be disappointed with this new edition. At 1000¥, and with a superior (SHM-CD) remaster, it's a bargain. So far, I've been cherry-picking titles from this latest reissue batch that were previously SHM-CDs, and each title has — as I've posted above — used the SHM-CD remaster. Great way to get the music in excellent sound. Even better when you have CD Japan points stacked up. Yeah I have the GRP version, there's a lot of room for improvement sound wise. When it was the only option, fine, but knowing this alternative is out there and for a reasonable price... i just placed my order. Also ordered Living Space (one i've wanted to get for ages) and Meditations (used to have it but traded it). I don't really have the money right now but fugg it: i always end up looking back and being thankful that past-me stretched his budget at the the time because current me really can't afford stuff now. I should check out CD Japan at some stage. I use Amazon Japan whenever possible and have had nothing but good experiences. They have some sort of points system but not sure how it compares to the CD Japan one. For some reason, i guess partly geographical although it doesn't entirely add up, it's cheaper for me to get something couriered from Amazon Japan than it is to get something posted from Amazon US. It's cheaper, and items arrive mint at my workplace within 2-3 days of shipping rather than 4-6 weeks when posted from Amazon US. A no brainer, i wish i'd discovered them earlier. When pre-ordering, Amazon Japan also starts the process of debiting my bank account a few days earlier than the release date and then ship on the actual release date rather than starting the process a couple of days after the release date like Amazon US does for me. Sorry to go on but the contrast has just been astounding; again i wish that i'd discovered Amazon Japan and ditched Amazon US/UK earlier. When ordering from the Netherlands, Amazon Japan only offer a very expensive shipping option, ¥1300 for one CD (DHL), whereas CD Japan charge ¥500 for the SAL shipment of one CD (regular post). Sure it takes a few days extra to arrive, but is very reliable and better protected through their elaborate packaging.
