  1. Eastern Rebellion arrived today. Mastered by Toshiyuki Abe who also did the Bethlehem albums for Solid. Not as loud as the stereo Bethlehems. Not a lot of bottom end, but that's probably the recording. At least Abe didn't try to boost the lowest and highest frequencies. And that's a relief. Your list is six titles short. This batch (2015-03-18) is numbered CDSOL-6301 through CDSOL-6330. 2. To attend concerts I would have to take an expensive trip to Amsterdam on progressively more uncomfortable public transport. Amsterdam is an open sewer where rudeness and anti-social behaviour are the norm. Then I would have to part with even more money to listen to music in a room full of potentially annoying strangers. You'd have to pay me to go through such an ordeal.
  3. I'm a bit confused. If the item on sale here is the set in the picture above, what's the difference with the book (with optional CDRs) on your website? Is that book the same as the CDROM commentary included in the 9CD set?
  4. Goooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loserpool 1 - King Louis I Gerrard fastest red card in Premier League history?
  5. He's in love with himself, thinks he's a genius blah, blah. More tolerable than Mourinho. That's not saying much, however. Typically Dutch. Today King Louis I of Manchester takes on Loserpool on their home turf.
  6. Hoping that before too long it'll be on Dimeadozen. I collect every concert by this band I can get my hands on.
  7. Is that a digipak? Having those shipped by bubble-mailer can be a bit hairy.
  8. Wonderful. I hope you're right.
  9. It should because it was distributed by BMG in the 90's, I don't remember when Warner stopped distributing ECM. In Europe, ECM CDs are manufactured at the Universal plant.
  10. Joe Henderson on Verve, mostly very good albums.
  11. Well, the occasion for this thread is the reissue of a long OOP but still coveted box set with 25 years old mastering and a reputation for comparatively good sound quality. Naturally there will be concerns about which route to take. The music itself has been discussed many times before in other threads.
  12. IMO, the books are also tripe, even the first three.
  13. Right. There are so many good shows, why bother if you're not excited to begin with.
  14. Yes thanks for sharing your research. Weird that the SHM remasters weren't used for the latest "low-priced" editions. I did a Google Translate search at Universal Japan's site a while ago, and remember reading (re. the Blue Note SHM-CDs) the phrase "final chapter" in regard to this fifth batch. I hope that doesn't mean this series is over! Even if it is, they picked some great titles. (Though Cecil was snubbed.) Hm, so possibly never a Vol. 2 of Hipp @ Hickory House - that would definitely suck! For the BNL999 there was a later batch titled BNL999 Encore. And now that the Blue Note 75th anniversary festivities are coming to an end, there is no reason a successor series of classic BN SHMs couldn't materialise in the near future. The project of digitising the BN catalogue through these Bernie Grundman transfers will be completed and Universal will want to make money off these new transfers one way or another. Also for the obscure titles. And these last few years have shown the market for quality (budget) CD reissues isn't dead yet, at least in Japan.
  15. You'd have to appreciate Oliphant to get hooked on Justified. Seasons 1 through 4 were excellent, as is 6. Five was miserable and is best skipped in favour of a wikipedia synopsis and a few pre-episode recaps at the start of season 6.
  16. Never even heard of it, homie. I'm about to watch this week's Justified and Americans myself.
  17. My conclusion is One Night In Birdland is not, see post #41.
  18. That was a quote from Peter Losin's website.
  19. One of the first jazz LPs I bought back in the very early 70s, the Ornithology with Fats and Bud is still one of the essential jazz recordings for me. Both this and the Columbia shown below play back above pitch; there is a remastering on one of the Andorran labels that corrects this (surprisingly enough!) It was a shock to hear the pitch corrected version (just that little bit slower and calm), but actually it makes sense when you get used to it. Has anyone else logged this? Xybert earlier posted a link to a review of the track Ornithology by Steve Coleman at jazz.com. "I have owned several versions of this exact recording, and almost all of them are technically flawed in one way or another. My most complete version is a CD re-mastered with the help of the excellent drummer Kenny Washington, who pitch-corrected the recording. Also the complete Bud Powell solo is present in this recording, whereas on my original LP edition that I still own, Bud's solo was edited out." He does not mention which CD release is the corrected version. On the 2014 Japanese release (2014 DSD remaster) Ornithology is 7:50. On the Japanese CD Powell's solo starts at 4:24 and ends at 6:00. More: Session information from plosin: "Most of the tunes on the Columbia LP produced by Gary Giddins are clearly off-speed -- about a half step sharp, sometimes more. The Sony (J) CD reissue is also fast, but the versions on the Bird Box LPs and CDs play at the correct pitch." "13 Ornithology (C. Parker-B. Harris) 8:04 At the beginning of Parker's solo someone (Little Jimmy Scott?) yells "Go, baby!" During his solo Navarro quotes "Cool Blues" (3:08-3:10); Parker and Navarro exchanges following Powell's solo (6:17-7:23)" Even more: MarkR, is this the Andorran release you own?
  20. I have this on the way from CD Japan. Should be here this week. Sony Japan also reissued Summit Meeting At Birdland. Is it in the same league as One Night In Birdland? It seems that One Night at Birdland was recorded on 30 June 1950, and Summit Meeting at Birdland on March 31, 1951 - May 9, 1953. I meant if the quality of the performances were on the same exalted level as on One Night In Birdland.

  22. Hello and welcome. On the last two Great Jazz Trio albums included in this batch (with Eddie Gomez and Al Foster: Chapter II and Moreover) Hank Jones switches to an electric instrument for some tracks. On Chapter II Jones plays what I can only describe as 'the electric piano from hell.' The East Wind albums arrived today. I'm very happy with these. I already look forward to ordering more Great Jazz Trio albums with the Jones, Carter, Williams line-up.
  23. The SHM remasters from 2011 were exceptional. If Meditations uses the 2011 remaster this is a must own disc. Some titles not issued in 2011 like Ascension, Africa Brass, Fire Music & Archie Shepp Live in San Francisco. I will definitely get Ascension to see what masterings are used. The last time this was issued in Japan was, I believe, in 2005, UCCI-9124, currently my preferred version.
  24. Amen! I'm not interested in discussing the music myself, though I do appreciate others here doing so. Or reading about the music in books. I'm on the internet to get ideas for building a more satisfying CD collection in terms of both quality of music and product. Less waste of modest resources. Modest resources is another reason I prefer to invest in a CD collection over going to live gigs, another pet subject of Steve's. Deal with it.
