  1. $24.75 is a bit expensive for mp3s IMO. These East Wind reissues are a little over $8 a piece on CD. My approach to mp3 is something you mightn't approve of, though. I download them through bittorrent to decide what to buy on CD and then erase them. Now listening to New Wine in Old Bottles.
  2. There's not much on Hank Jones' Great Jazz Trio at Allmusic, but this overview of the recordings of the lineup with Carter & Williams on Do The Math was really helpful. I just ordered At the Village Vanguard Vol.1 & 2, and KJLH, along with Cedar Walton's Pit Inn.
  3. Yes, they sound stellar. Much improved. from post #34 and
  4. On CD as Thelonious Monk Piano Solo (Vogue, BMG France, 1996). discogs
  5. No, they will simply hold back those titles for you as soon as they come in until your order can be completed. You can see in your order history whether they have arrived yet. It will say 'In Stock', but that will be solely for you.
  6. A number of those from the first batch, October (and probably November) 2013, are OOP. For example Clark's Cool Struttin'. At CD Japan, it seems they are available for 12 months. After that, depending on how popular they are, you're at risk of either missing out or paying extra on eBay, amazon third party, etc. Things may be a bit different at HMV Japan, but they don't ship everywhere.

  9. I probably need to be more cautious about the time I spend under headphones. Otherwise I have to keep volume down or I'd annoy the neighbours. When you listen to jazz, you never know if the neighbours' stares are because the music is too loud or they think you're crazy to listen to that racket from what they can hear passing by your front door.
  10. After a very poor fifth season, Justified is back on track for its final season, the big showdown between Raylan and Boyd. The Americans also going strong this season. Huge potential here, let's hope it's not waisted like it almost was on Justified (both on FX).

Not US, but probably cheaper than amazon.co.jp. CD Japan
  12. Haven't you heard? Hell is freezing over in the U.S.A. The Cold Hard Truth
  13. Episode 4 tonight.
  14. Hi Erwin. My Originals "Transition" CD from Vol. 5 box has the same tracks and at the same order as the 2011 SHM-CD. You mean that it was not like this, and was later corrected? Thanks Alex I believe so. Amazon
  15. Erwin, one of the ways that I first connected emotionally to stringed instruments in classical music was through Beethoven's String Quartet works, especially the late works which seem to combine both writing that is technically difficult (I imagine, I don't play those type of instruments at all) and appeared to me very emotional. My father on the other hand likes the earliest and doesn't know what to make of the later ones, and he's not a very emotional person or listener. I first related to piano music in classical music, having spent time with pianos and loving the piano in other genres. I like the Beethoven late quartets. My preferred performances are the Emerson cycle on DG. I first heard them, also on DG, by the Amadeus Quartet and found those renditions very off-putting. The first string performance that caught my attention was Schubert, Quintet in C major. link
  16. Good discussion earlier on in the thread. This set is a real treasure trove, best consumed after acquainting oneself with the standalone Blue Note albums. Trio, strings, some great horns. The May 17, 1967 trio session ended up being my favourite.
  17. Listening to disc 1 of Andrew Hill's Mosaic Select 16, I was wondering if there are any known Francis Wolff photographs of Paul Motian from the January 16, 1970 session. All photos in the booklet come from 1967 sessions. And what about the 1969 sessions with string quartet?
  18. Whereas in Fargo Bob Odenkirk was no more than Bob Odenkirk with a moustache, he's absolutely nailed it in the first three episodes of Better Call Saul.
  19. 1. Did you grow up in a household with classical music around you? Yes, my mother played piano and my parents had a couple of vinyl records, but her choice in classical music (Mozart) did not end up being mine. When I eventually started buying classical music CDs it was mostly string quartets/quintets, cello suites, etc. Coincidentally, I generally don't like string instruments in a jazz context. 2. Did you learn an instrument and experience classical music that way? No. 3. How does classical music relate to your love of jazz? A secondary interest, a primary interest (with jazz in second place) or part of the seamless web of music? I was also exposed to jazz at a young age through my uncle's vinyl collection (Ben Webster). I did connect emotionally to Ben Webster's playing, whereas my mother's piano playing didn't do much for me. Classical music is definitely a secondary interest. I have trouble connecting emotionally to a lot of types of classical music, and am very sensitive to finding a performance that appeals to me. I think I especially like string instrument performances that are sometimes seen as rather technical and clinical, perhaps.
  20. Or, especially those of us who grew up knowing only a few words of English, but speaking a language not too far removed from it.

  23. Who knows, it might come in handy if the hotel runs out of toilet paper. Is that a comment on the book's literary merits, or it's political leanings? Serious question btw. Political leanings.
