  1. There really is a bunch of stuff available from this time period and IMO as Jim suggested much of it is worthwhile. Some of my personal favorites include a couple of recordings I have of performancesf from 1980 in Warsaw and Umea with this personnel - Sonny Rollins (ts), Mark Soskin (p), Jerome Harris (el-b), Al Foster (d). The Warsaw tapes are a favorite of mine, too. 10 thumbs up
  2. As far as I know: Bootlegs are grey market material. Live, unauthorized recordings that were commercially available by "bootleg labels" Private recordings are the same as bootlegs, but are not put on the market for sale. They are circulated by fans for private use only - Never for Sale! Truthfully, every one I've heard has had much to offer. I've not catalogued those that I have (and relative to what I understand is out there, I have but a handful) by date or location, so I can't tell you what's what, just that if you have a chance to get some, carpe diem. Thanks, Jim - I'm carping as we speak...
  3. Thnaks for the info, guys. Now, what other privare recordings (not grey market bootlegs) of Rollins in the 80s and 90s do you think is his best of that period?
  4. (If it belongs to the discography forum, please move it) Everybody say that the best way to appreciate Newk is to listen to him live or to his live recordings. So, what private recordings of Newk do you consider his best? Any favorite 70s, 80s and 90s Newk? THNX!
  5. Lester Bowie's Brass Orchestra Fantasy Brotherhood of Breath Sam Rivers' RivBea Orchestra
  6. I wish some of Mobley's tunes would become standards. For example: This I dig of you (Soul station) My Groove your move (Roll Call) Avila & Tequila (HM 4tet & Bu's "At the Cafe Bohemia")
  7. I'll do my best, Sir.
  8. Very interesting! Thanks Chris & jazzshrink
  9. I've been listening to a great live recording by the great late NHOP. A solo recital, btw. One of the tunes NHOP played was Newk's St. Thomas. After the tune ended NHOP said that it was originally a Danish folk song... And I thought it was a Caribbean Calypso... If that's the case, how did a Danish folk song turned out is The Caribbeans??
  10. Happy Birthday Paul. Have a great day!
  11. Happy Birthday, Maren and Yom Hu'ledet Same'ach
  12. Have you guys all converted to Judaism? It must be the coming of Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement...
  13. Shanah Tova to all board members and their families! From Einat and Barak (that's what it says in Hebrew on the white card in the middle of the flower basket )
  14. RIP Mr Arvanitas Some additional fine recorings: Some of the best Live Pepper Adams recordings are with mr. Arvanitas at the piano helm. And I also like his duo recording with David Murray. A fine pianist he was.
  15. Me neither - are you sure he's an Israeli? Anyway you are all invited to listen to some Israeli Jazz on my site (on my label) ← No, I'm not. Actually, Eldad lives just a few doors away from me here in L.A., but I know that he's spent time in Israel and Northern Africa (a musical sabatical I believe), so i thought that you might have heard of him. ← Well, Eldad IS a Hebrew name.
  16. I am not familiar with this name. ← me neither
  17. hmmm... Jerusalem is 40 minutes drive from Tel Aviv... Seriously, if the competitors in the semi finals were as strong as the 2003 competitors in the bone context, every one of the 10 semi finalists must be a killer guitarist.
  18. Yotam Silberstein is indeed an excellent young guitarist, AND he's from Jerusalem, so he must be good...
  19. This is one of the several CDs I took with me to our Alaska trip about 2 years ago. I probably listened to this side more than two dozen times in that month. There are two kind of sides in that sort of intense listening: Some are the kind that really getting on your nerves, making you want to never hear these sides again, or the one that really become a favorite. This CD is definitely belong to the latter kind for me. I can listen to "The Eternal Triangle" repeatedly even today. BTW, Brignola's version of The Eternal Triangle is almost as good as this one afaic.
  20. THNX, Jim
  21. OK, this is a proper thread to return to the big O after a rather long hiatus. Beger is one of the best Israeli Jazz players. He's really really good. He is not well outside Israel known because he decided to stay in Israel rather to go to the States. beger is a great influence on many young musicians here (inc. myself when I played a long time ago). Beger is not a household name in Israel, but every Jazz fan knows of him if not know his music. His last CD before Evolving Silence Vol.1 is called Listening You can listen to a sample Here. This is a 5tet w/Alto sax/B-cl; d; e-guitar and e-bass. Another nice album is a trio (w/bass and drums) called Hevel Havalim. Here is a sample Enjoy
