  1. Here are the top five shows I attended in 2005 (in Israel): Pyramid Trio - Roy Campbell, William Parker & Hamid Drake (February) Jemeel Moondoc & Sabir Mateen w/Chad Taylor et al (June) Buddy DeFranco (January) Roberto Gato w/Danilo Rea (November) David Murray & Archie Shepp (February)
  2. I have several of the half-Notes and can recommend some of them: Conrad Herwig's The Latin Side of Miles is excellent. Same goes with Miri Ben Ari's "Temple Of Beautiful". I prefer this album over Sahara. Von and Chico Freeman's Album is EXCELLENT. A lot of fun. It inc. a great track with Dianne Reeves on board. Reeves outshines her usual self. Bill Watrous' album is perhaps his best performance that I've heard pf him. Nothing of the over-produced studio records that he's doing.
  3. Happy Birthday!!
  4. Many Happy Returns, Dmitry!
  5. Happy Birthday David!!!
  6. RIP. My heart and thoughts are with Sam. If she was half as lovely as the tune that Sam wrote for her, we all lost a special person.
  7. There really is a bunch of stuff available from this time period and IMO as Jim suggested much of it is worthwhile. Some of my personal favorites include a couple of recordings I have of performancesf from 1980 in Warsaw and Umea with this personnel - Sonny Rollins (ts), Mark Soskin (p), Jerome Harris (el-b), Al Foster (d). The Warsaw tapes are a favorite of mine, too. 10 thumbs up
  8. As far as I know: Bootlegs are grey market material. Live, unauthorized recordings that were commercially available by "bootleg labels" Private recordings are the same as bootlegs, but are not put on the market for sale. They are circulated by fans for private use only - Never for Sale! Truthfully, every one I've heard has had much to offer. I've not catalogued those that I have (and relative to what I understand is out there, I have but a handful) by date or location, so I can't tell you what's what, just that if you have a chance to get some, carpe diem. Thanks, Jim - I'm carping as we speak...
  9. Thnaks for the info, guys. Now, what other privare recordings (not grey market bootlegs) of Rollins in the 80s and 90s do you think is his best of that period?
  10. (If it belongs to the discography forum, please move it) Everybody say that the best way to appreciate Newk is to listen to him live or to his live recordings. So, what private recordings of Newk do you consider his best? Any favorite 70s, 80s and 90s Newk? THNX!
  11. Lester Bowie's Brass Orchestra Fantasy Brotherhood of Breath Sam Rivers' RivBea Orchestra
  12. I wish some of Mobley's tunes would become standards. For example: This I dig of you (Soul station) My Groove your move (Roll Call) Avila & Tequila (HM 4tet & Bu's "At the Cafe Bohemia")
  13. I'll do my best, Sir.
  14. Very interesting! Thanks Chris & jazzshrink
  15. I've been listening to a great live recording by the great late NHOP. A solo recital, btw. One of the tunes NHOP played was Newk's St. Thomas. After the tune ended NHOP said that it was originally a Danish folk song... And I thought it was a Caribbean Calypso... If that's the case, how did a Danish folk song turned out is The Caribbeans??
  16. Happy Birthday Paul. Have a great day!
  17. Happy Birthday, Maren and Yom Hu'ledet Same'ach
  18. Have you guys all converted to Judaism? It must be the coming of Yom Kippur - the Day of Atonement...
  19. Shanah Tova to all board members and their families! From Einat and Barak (that's what it says in Hebrew on the white card in the middle of the flower basket )
  20. RIP Mr Arvanitas Some additional fine recorings: Some of the best Live Pepper Adams recordings are with mr. Arvanitas at the piano helm. And I also like his duo recording with David Murray. A fine pianist he was.
  21. Me neither - are you sure he's an Israeli? Anyway you are all invited to listen to some Israeli Jazz on my site (on my label) ← No, I'm not. Actually, Eldad lives just a few doors away from me here in L.A., but I know that he's spent time in Israel and Northern Africa (a musical sabatical I believe), so i thought that you might have heard of him. ← Well, Eldad IS a Hebrew name.
