WHAT HAPPENED TO BLUE LAKE RADIO?
Jim Alfredson replied to randissimo's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
It's too bad that people are dumb enough to believe that a billionaire Republican with a yacht that costs more than most people make in their lifetimes gives a shit about the working man. WAKE UP, BOZOS! -
There are a million guitarists out there... and probably a million drummers, too! You should take up nose-flute or accordian. Not enough of those around and you could work like crazy!

Yanow Is Here
Jim Alfredson replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
My concern was a general one and it has already happened, not with AMG or Yanow, but with at least one other publication that I know of. Does that mean that I will censor people who speak badly of critics? No... in fact, the thread that caused the magazine not to review us is still here. I did not delete it. But it doesn't mean I shouldn't be concerned about it. Right or wrong, that's the way it is with some people... they can't distinguish between organissimo the band and organissimo the forum. And right or wrong, it affects MY GROUP, which is woking very very hard to make it. My problem with these "criticisms" (and it's not just about Yanow at all) is that they tend to be rude and disrespectful. I have no problem with someone not liking a critic's writing, or not liking this band, or not liking whatever, but the thread that was deleted (not by me) was just ugly. I'm sure Yanow can defend himself and will do so when he sees this thread. -
Yanow Is Here
Jim Alfredson replied to AllenLowe's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Maybe, but it was sent as a personal email with the intention that it was for Allen, not the entire forum. If Yanow wanted the forum to see it, he would've posted it here. I'm sure you've had lots of correspondance over the years, be they over the phone or letters or emails, that you wouldn't want posted on a public board, would you Chris? -
Yanow Is Here

Posting a private email is in really bad taste, imo. -
Thanks. I just want more people to be hip to him because I think he stands right up there with the top players and he writes his own material (and that material has a really 'dark' sense of humor about it, much like the man himself). I haven't listened to him in awhile, but I've been pulling out everything I have of his lately and revisiting his approach. It's just damn good stuff.

Well, those top horns are simply a baffle as well. The horn driver (high-frequency driver) is mounted below and fires up into the horns. Only the horns rotate (and only one side of the horn is actually "open" to allow sound out... the other is simply for balance) and the speaker is stationary.
-
Here's a good picture of a Leslie, with the wooden rotor at the bottom. That 15" woofer is in the middle of the cabinet (the wooden back is on this Leslie... it was taken off for the photo you posted). That wooden baffle is what rotates, not the speaker. It is "scooped" at one end, so sound only comes out of one side of it.
-
That woofer fires down into a baffle made of wood that rotates. In the picture that SS1 posted, you can see the baffle at the bottom (covered in cloth). Without the cloth, they look like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=160031303427 Later, Leslie did invent the RotoSonic Leslie, which had a 6x9 speaker (or two) mounted inside a wooden rotor that spun around. But they don't sound as good as the 15" woofer downfiring into the baffle, imo. EDIT: SS1, what happened to the pic of the 31H?

Just got home from picking up this beauty. The guy was about 2 hours from me, one-way. It's a beauty, though. I'll plug her in later today! Woot!

A Message From Ekaterina
Jim Alfredson replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I get wanna-be registrations from gawab.com addresses every single day on this board. So many that I've had to make it so every registration gets manually approved by me, otherwise you'd all be inundated with cigarette ads, porn, and stock market tips. -
I've actually heard (from someone that's done it) that converting a 147 to a 122 is fairly straight-ahead. After all, they use the same tubes and the same components. The real difference is that the audio of the 147 is single-ended (unbalanced) whereas the 122 is balanced. But I think I'll keep this one amp as a 47 and get another 122 amp to swap out with it. Just this weekend I got a call for someone wanting to rent a 47-style Leslie and I didn't have one.
-
It's basically a single-speed version of the 147, much like the 21H or 22 is to the 122. It can be converted to dual-speed. I think what I'll do is put new motors in it and get a 122 amp for it, so I can use it as either a 147 or 122.

I'm starting a new thread on Bill Heid because more people need to know about him. He put out some fabulous records on the Savant label that anyone who calls themselves a fan of the organ should own. And for everyone who thinks Unity is the best organ record ever, you need to listen to Dark Secrets. In fact, it was listening to that record this weekend during my drive to and from gigs that I decided to start this thread. The album is set-up just like Unity: Hammond B3, drums, trumpet and tenor (with some percussion here and there). The tunes are very Larry Young-ish (Heid having studied with Young) but there is also some greaze on tunes like "That Dirty Thang". It also features one of my favorite drummers (who happens to live right here in Lansing) Randy Gelispie. While all of his records are great, another superb one is Bop Rascal. This is a trio date, with the amazing Perry Hughes on guitar. Perry is one of those cats that all the musicians know, but the public isn't as knowledgable about him. Perry is second to no one on the guitar: The guy can hang with anyone. An incredible player in the Wes tradition, I try to see Perry play whenever I can. I'll never forget seeing Bill Heid play for the first time at the Detriot Jazz Festival. He went on right before Jimmy McGriff. Joey DeFrancesco was going on after Jimmy, and both of them were backstage during Bill's set. Bill had Perry and Randy with him and they were playing their asses off. I was watching Joey's reactions and every now and then he would just look back at Jimmy or Houston Person (who was playing with Jimmy, I believe) with a look of "man, this guy can PLAY!" on his face. Y'all gotta get hip to Bill Heid. He's the real deal.

I have a VPI HW-19Jr. It's the only piece of gear from my once magnificent $8000 stereo system that I have kept (ah, the joys of marraige!) It has a Rega arm on it (not sure which one) and a Grado cartridge (again, not sure which... I think a Red?) and it goes through a McCormick preamp. It's a nice sounding set-up. These days I only listen to vinyl when I'm dubbing something into the computer for someone.

Lazaro, you should've came closer and you would've realized that wasn't Joe either. That was Greg Nagy (GregN here on the board). The Salmon Festival originally wanted organissimo, but Joe is on vacation in Colorado, so Greg booked us as "The James Brothers, featuring members of both organissimo and Root Doctor". Randy was suppposed to make the hit but forgot about it and so we called Tim at the last minute (actually we called about 6 drummers in the area, but Tim got back to us quickly and it was a joy playing with him). We had lots of fun and I hope to play with Tim in the future. It was inspiring playing as "The James Brothers". I'm trying to branch out lately and play with different people, which always leads to new ideas and directions. Later this month I'll be doing a duo with drummer Jeff Shoup in Lansing. Joe and I played with Jeff for years before we met Randy, so it'll be great to play with my old friend again.

http://www.hammondorganco.com/index.php?op...4&Itemid=37 Tommy Shaw plays a Hammond?!

Her expression looks about right for a woman being "seduced" by a jazz flautist.

What would a chipmunk do with a bird?
Jim Alfredson replied to kulu se mama's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Great, so now the chipmunk will die because you took away it's dinner. Nice one.
