  1. Yes. That's exactly it. No jokes allowed. Heretofor, any lollygagging, frivilous posts, or humor will not be tolerated and you'll be banned. So glad that my point was understood loud and clear. Gimme a break. I'm just saying, between this thread and terri's thread about Norah Jones, not to mention cooltrane's "I'm new" thread, when anyone new comes along everyone assumes they are spamming the board and instantly poke fun at them. Not exactly a way to encourage new membership. Do we really have a big problem with spam on this board? If so, I haven't noticed. How about being a little more kind to the new posters? I was never a big supporter of hazing in college and I'm not now, if you know what I mean. And no, this isn't directed at anyone in particular so don't get all defensive on me.
  2. Well, fkimbrough is pianist Frank Kimbrough, and he's good friends w/Andrew Hill... he may have even heard them at the Hill house, for all we know! And if you check his stats, he joined back in May of 2004, so he's hardly a newbie. Welcome, one and all! I don't know why everyone gets all up and fussy about spam, especially when it pertains to jazz (and specifically Andrew frickin' Hill!) At least we haven't had spam for cigarettes and russian girls, like the TapeOp board. Those are ridiculous.
  3. TiVo is pretty cool. If I watched more TV, I'd get one. SVHS is nice and I agree with Kevin that the compression on DVDs is shitty (thanks again, industry for rolling something out before it's time) but the media has really come down in price and for archiving TV shows to watch again, it's fine.
  4. The trend in modern pop/rock towards the "loudness wars" is really sad. One of the last pop/rock CDs I bought was a Seal CD and I loved the music but could not listen to the disc because it had absolutely no dynamic range and caused extreme fatique to my ears. This was back in '98 or so. It's only gotten worse. Why record companies make engineers do this is beyond me. And trust me, it is not the engineers' choice... it is the producers and the record company that demand it. They think if people have to touch the volume on their radio, they'll change the channel, not realizing or not caring that the radio stations already compress this shit out of the audio before it goes out anyway. It is especially disheartening that they are now applying this technique to remasters. I haven't bought any remasters lately (as I have been actively trying to buy new releases only.... especially jazz) but to squash all the life out of Hendrix is nothing short of a crime.
  5. This is a different thread, my friend. Your joke is in the other one.
  6. I didn't see that, but it reminds me of this past weekend. I went to a funeral for the father of a great college friend of mine, and in the process hooked up with other college friends and their wives. At dinner we were talking and they asked my wife, who none of them have really gotten to know yet, how old she was and when she said 31, they were shocked. They thought she was younger than me (I'm 27) and thus younger than them! She liked that, to say the least.
  7. I don't know... that last Heat/Pistons game was really close up until the fourth quarter where all of a sudden the Pistons changed into a different team. I think they (the Pistons) are clicking more than ever and are going to be very tough.
  8. I'm with you, brother! Great win over the Suns today.... unfortunately I didn't realize it was an early game, so I missed it, but I'll be watching the game against Orlando tomorro!
  9. And thus, my original assumption as to the ulterior motive behind this thread is confirmed.
  10. Scott's diggin' himself some holes tonight!
  11. Weather Report is completely worthy of inclusion. Even Spyro Gyra has some decent stuff, although most of it is schlock. But Weather Report is heavy.
  12. It's hard to blame the buying public when the industry offers up a standard that is incompatable with the millions of CD players, CD-ROMs, car stereos, etc. and offers no objective improvement from the medium it's meant to replace. And after that, it was expensive as all get-out, both the medium and the players. Now, of course, they are relatively inexpensive, but when they came out they were ridiculous. Now, you and I can hear the difference but the average public cannot. Or maybe they can but they don't think it's worth the extra money for "better" sound (like myself, when it first came out). It's the industry fault for releasing something badly thought out in the first place.
  13. Except who Jimmy Smith is, for starters...
  14. Great story, Chuck. Did he sign the book?
  15. SNWOLF, that's a helluva first post! Very interesting, especially for me as I have a history of mental illness in my family.
  16. Honestly, I think every song on that LP is classic. EVERY one....(and yes, one cylander is a standout, which Lonnie Smith revives on his latest CD "Too Damn Hot.") "Too Damn Hot" is one of the best jazz releases of 2004.

  18. I assume the two secret lovers were unscathed by the fall? That's a funny story!
  19. Why did you create another account? I can just change your name if you'd like.
  20. I was talking to the lead singer of the R&B band I play with the other day. We were having a rehearsal and waiting for the other guys to show up. On TV they were showing footage of MLK and the civil rights movement. The lead singer is black and I mentioned that I can't listen to MLK speak without being moved, usually to tears. He was just an amazing orator. Freddie said that he can't watch such documentaries. He said it's easy for him to watch WWII documentaries or movies because "you know how it's going to end. But this stuff is still going on!" Amen.
  21. This is an endlessly fascinating thread. It's a shame to hear about the inadequencies of the book. I am wary of books on jazz figures ever since reading the horrendous Grant Green "biography". If I ever write that bio on Jimmy Smith, I'll sumbit it here before publishing.
  22. When you were in Detroit you could've picked up both 89.1 WEMU from Ann Arbor, and WDET 101.9 in Detroit.
  23. ...easy for the guy to say! Hell no! Not easy at all! Trust me, I was freakin' out when the doctor said he'd have to do a c-section. I was also very relieved since my wife had been in labor for 24 hours at that point. That's childbirth!! Multiple conflicting emotions running rampant!
  24. Indeed. I find it actually lessens my ability to get involved in the movie. First, because all the dialog comes out of this tiny center channel speaker and seems very disconnected from the screen, and secondly because once you manage to actually immerse yourself in the movie for a few seconds, some stupid sound effect goes whizzin' around your head! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?! Oh, it was a mosquito that flew by the camera lens.
  25. Interesting article. I agree that the technology companies don't have a clue and I am not surprised SACD and DVD-audio are dying. The general public does not care about fidelity as is evidenced by the quick adoption of DVD movies, people's non-complaints about radio (squashing the life out of recordings), and the rise of the mp3 culture. Surround sound is gimicky, even for movies. Who has the space, the time, or the interest in setting up five to seven speakers just so you an hear birds chirping behind you? A buddy of mine has a very expensive surround sound system set up (not optimally... most living rooms are not designed with 5.1 or 7.1 sound in mind) and when I watch movies with him I prefer to have it turned off.
