  1. Doesn't that little black book say that one reaps what one sows? Like many things in that book, it's on the money—Phil, Orrin and Leonard are (even in death re the latter) proving the validity of that tired old saying. That does not mean that they haven't done good things—some actually have.
  2. Just heard back from George. 30 seconds is what he meant, the actual gap being 27 seconds.
  3. 3 minutes or 30 seconds sound more plausible. I'll ask George and get back.
  4. That's odd. I just clicked on it in your response, and it took me right there! Try again. BTW do I owe Barbara Woodhouse to you? If so, thanks and please note that I made the change. Which gives me an opportunity to test another link.
  5. This just in from George Avakian. Dear Chris – Just received word that Schaap made two major goofs in his Goodman Carnegie Hall mastering – he omitted nearly 30 minutes of I Got Rhythm and there is a groove skip near the end of Buck Clayton’s third chorus on Honeysuckle Rose – inexplicable since he presumably used Howard Scott’s tapes that Benny had given Howard. But anything can happen with Schaap. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx* George *Last sentence witheld by CA BTW, here's a link to a pertinent 3-month-old entry on my blog.
  6. Carson and Steve Allen, seemed old-fashioned to me—even when they weren't. Prematurely passé, I guess.
  7. That's a great collection to have—especially for someone who reads French. I have a few copies that Panassié sent me over the years, and I value them highly.
  8. The Zune has a sharper screen, but that is the only advantage over the iPod that I have heard. The iPod is compatible with a far greater apps library and is, understand, better in many ways. I am told that Zune is largely for people suffering from Applephobia (as we see evidenced here )
  9. I would be interested in hearing comments on this entry by Chris Rich on his blog, Brilliant Corners, which is a spot well worth paying a regular visit to.* BTW, it can always be reached via Stomp Off
  10. I will be having bison burgers swimming in a naughty wine sauce and topped with crisp-fried onions. Also boiled new potatoes with a subtle caramel (butter and sugar) coating, and (courtesy of my trusty old Cuisinart) a cucumber salad on the side. No, this is not Bison Tartar, they will be fully cooked.
  11. Here's an early rock and roll song.... Conrad should love this.
  12. You were right the first time, James. He's in Hattiesberg, and the addiction being treated is sex..
  13. Tiger is in rehab. Nasty (funny) parting shots have been heard on Conan's show all week, if not longer. I hope Leno has a hard time coming back.
  14. I think "Headlines" was the best part of Leno's show—and it came from the viewers.
  15. I enjoy these sides as much today as I did many, many, many years ago, when they first spun on my turntable. My favorites are probably the Spanier/Bechet sides, which I had in their original 12" 78rpm form.
  16. Never heard that term applied to music, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from burning out the stuff mentioned in this thread's opening post—provided that they also threw out the ashes.
  17. If you find all this "tiring," just don't watch it. Are you being force-fed TV?
  18. I just saw Bloomberg, the guy who recently spent millions of his own dollars buying his own re-election ask people to contribute to Haiti. I didn't hear him pledge a dollar of his own.
  19. A truly great jazz performer may well have been born this week. Sorry to hear that we lost Ed Thigpen.
  20. I know, Allen. BTW, I was at the post office when you posted this. I also have a one-hour (or is it 2?) roundtable discussion about the future of something called jazz. It took place over 50 years ago and the panelists include, if memory serves, Hentoff, Martin, and Schuller.
  21. Somewhere around here, in a closet, tucked away in an old Scotch tape box there is a reel of 51 years old tape containing my interview with Billie. It took place in her dressing room at Pep's, a Philadelphia club where she was appearing. Unlike my "interview" with Prez, which was never meant to be heard as such, this was done for my radio show and meant to be heard in toto. I haven't had a rel-to-reel deck in many years, so I don't even know what I've got in those tape boxes, but there should also be interviews with Rex Stewart, Jimmy Rushing, Willie the Lion. Mahalia. Count Basie, Lem Winchester, and others. Perhaps it has all turned to magnetized brittle.
  22. Prestige also issued some interesting non-jazz albums, ranging from Burgess Meredith reading Ray Bradbury stories to a Hermione Baddeley comedy album and Billy Dee Williams singing cabaret songs.
  23. Plain old double LP set. Allen, I'm surprised that you don't have this Riverside album... or, do you?
  24. Thanks, Chewy, for reminding me. I have now dusted off my album and will be listening to it today. Fortunately, although the cover reveals my 50 years of having this set, the discs are pristine—having access to the real thing , I think I played it twice, at most.
  25. Monday is opening day for the talllest building in the world, I hear tell that it exceeds the height of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings stacked!
