  1. There was a lengthy period during which they did not communicate. That followed Leonard's Metronome article on John, which appeared during WWII and was entitled, "HEIL HAMMOND." They eventually made up, but I don't think their friendship ever was a warm one. Again, thanks to you guys for looking in on my somewhat disorganized blog
  2. Thank you, kh.
  3. His wig is made of early, unprocessed vinyl shavings, his teeth are on loan from a Bulgarian war museum, his delusion is genuine. Given all that, he is still a tad more talented than Peter Lemongello. Anyone here remember Lemongello? Back in '76, he sold himself on late-nite TV, like a bonus Ginsu knife.
  4. Never came close to being my favorite Parker—matter of fact, I had a closer affinity for my Parker pen. And that tail on his head? Puleeeze!
  5. Here's the latest one I reported—came in today and has a slightly different wrinkle in that it openly invites the recipient to commit fraud. Well, I guess they all do, but this one just seems to be not quite as subtle as what I am used to. The guy seriously needs to have his sixth sense repaired. Good Day, How are you doing? I am Michael Kumani a solicitor at law. This is a personal email written from my office to you about my late client whose name is Robert, he was my friend and I was his solicitor until the point of his death, he died unfortunately in an autocrash alongside his family. Just immediately after his death has been confirmed alongside the death of his family, his account officer asked me to find his next of kin who could stand in for my late client in order to claim his estate valued at 9.8 Million GBP, I set about immediately to do that, I wrote several letters to different organizations, embassies and what have you so I could locate his next of kin but all my efforts hit a brick wall, I have been asked to produce a next of kin by the board of directors in the next 14 days o r else they plan to use the abandoned property decree of the company which is to impound the funds after the 14 days given to me, two days ago, I got some official letters saying that a likely confiscation of the assets was really underway with reference and in accordance to existing laws of the institution. On this note I will like you to know that I have put my trust in you and that is why I have contacted you and I find this also more possible because you might be of the same nationality with my late client which will make it the more easier for you to put up a claim to the bank as his next of kin. I know the bank want the funds for themselves and would want to share it amongst themselves which would make them enrich their fat accounts and greedy stomachs. Now my purpose for doing this is to get this funds, for this purpose I seek your assistance because for the past eight years I've been unable to find his next of kin. I know you must also ask what about the legal documents that we will need to get this done, you don't have to worry about that because I have all the needed documents that would make you have the legal right to make this claim before it gets confisticated in the next 14-15 days and so the money can be shared between us, I know there are other persons with the same name as my late client and I even put up an advertisement for that and I received all sorts of mails and applications but after a little check, my 6th sense told me to use you instead. Can I trust you on this? I will get all legal documents necessary for you to use to back up your claim. Please contact me by my number below or my alternate email michaelkumani@gmx.co.uk Kindly give me a contact number to reach you so we can discuss further on how to proceed. Regards, Michael Kumani Esq. Phone: +447404400170
  6. He had a knack for finding truly interesting, often amazing recordings. I will miss staying up to hear his show on WNYC-FM.
  7. I recall 78 rpm changers as being rather commonplace when I was a teenager (1940s). When RCA came out with that awful, cheap 45rpm changer, we were already used to the concept of stacking the discs. Then, of course, there were the jukeboxes. I also recall that some reviewers regarded as odd the way I programmed the 10-LP Bessie Smith series. There are two reasons why I programmed them so that Side 1 of Disc 1 contained (in chronological order, of course) Bessie's first recordings while Side 2 of Disc 1 had her last recordings. That way, one could stack all 10 LPs on a changer and listen to them in chronological order, simply turning the entire stack over at the end of Disc 10. Another very practical reason why I chose this arrangement was that Bessie's chronological output reflect the recording techniques employed from 1923 to 1933—i.e. from acoustic to electric. Some people have difficulty adjusting to acoustic recordings, so this avoided issuing strictly acoustical LPs. It seemed logical.
  8. Countries have ben attacked for less. Reminds me of something I recently reminisced about here. Scroll down to the illustration, "Hear My Song," and read from there.
  9. As if the performances, production and music weren't bad enough?
  10. I made a little montage to give you an idea of what the set looks like. The printed book is a compilation of articles, cartoons, covers, etc. in color and on good glossy paper.
  11. People should have better sense than to fall for something that obvious, especially people who have studied law. I think Howell deserves to lose every penny of that amount. How utterly stupid and avoidable. As someone who has been ripped off by a "respectable" law firm, I have no trust in these guys, and no sympathy.
  12. I find the cover of this new album as bothersome as Whitney Houston's exhibitionistic "I Will Always Love You
  13. Also worth it for the Thurbers and Dorothy Parkers and .....
  14. The search feature could use improvement, but it works on key words, departments, authors, etc. it will ask you to insert the pertinent disc. You can also browse through all the issues by cover, eyc. I have always found what I was looking for. Could it be more intuitive? Definitely, but it does a nice job and the software automatically looks for updates when you start it up.
  15. It shows every bit of every page. Nothing left unscanned.
  16. I paid $75 for this and it was worth every penny. I am almost sorry that I already have it, because this price is ridiculous. Think of what you get.....years and years of fantastic writing, great cartoons and interesting advertisements. This is the New Yorker starting with issue 1 (1925) and it is every page of every issue. Go for it!
  17. Interesting, I didn't know that I had written notes for any of his albums. Are they readable or—like so much of my work, especially earlier writing—embarrassing?
  18. It seems to me that your dentist is among the last persons you would want to hate you. I know that Willis is long gone, but has anyone checked with Schaap on the current condition of Jackson's teeth?

    Miles

I know that I've already posted the resulting article, so just skip that. However, you might find mildly interesting my intro—so here's a link to My Lunch with Miles.
  20. When it is ready to go and you have a price, I will put a plug and a link on my blog. It has close to 16,000 hits so far, so one never knows, do one? BTW, give me some pertinent images and I will create a visually enticing plug
  21. No, I was wondering if it existed—the performance obviously took place.
  22. I wonder why we don't hear Ruby Walker (Smith) in that set. John had her replace Bessie, who had died the year before and to whom the 1938 evening was dedicated. According to the program, Ruby rehearsed with Basie and Howard Taubman's NYT review has her opening the concert, accompanied by James P. Johnson. So, one may wonder if the recordings leave anything else out.
  23. 1948 was the year I turned the dial on my wood-encased B&O radio and stumbled upon jazz. It was a very great year for me. Yes, I know that it always sounds best the first time, but this music just kept on giving....
  24. The ones that have Albertson stomping off, endlessly, on his political treadmill and making only left turns. Sometimes I just wanna scream!
