  1. I'm always amazed to find guys playing the same metal riffs I was playing in high school. 16 years ago. I was at Elderly a week ago, playing a Yamaha nylon-string practice guitar in the small room with all the acoustic amps, and after a while turned around to find a couple of metalheads standing at the door listening to me. If they only knew...
  2. It would expedite things to get a good guitar teacher to work with for a couple of years. Then you can use those books to expand on that base of knowledge.
  3. Perhaps Organissimo fans can pre-pay to help the band get this one out sooner. (ala the ArtistShare model!) Funny you should mention it. We were discussing that very idea at the gig tonight.
  4. It's a very good idea. It gets you out of playing strictly guitaristic stuff. One of the most interesting non-guitar solos I ever learned was from Miles on Freddie Freeloader. Try to play the rhythms and pitches exactly as he does. It's not as simple as it initially sounds. I had also worked up Wynton's solo on the same tune, though an octave down for some of it IIRC. For chords, there's a good (and slim) book by Joe Pass that would get you on the right track.

  6. Wish I could come down! Got a gig tomorrow night...
  7. I guess my sage advice isn't worth what it used to be...
  8. An excellent first entry in the Organissimo CD liner note competition!
  9. Has someone been faking Organissimos?
  10. By that I mean work on whatever piques your interest. Don't worry about "shoulds".
  11. I had a couple of teachers when I first started out (from age 8 to about 14) who had me reading off and on. But then I got into rock, playing in basement bands. No one reads in those situations. I started doing some more reading in the late 90's; real book tunes, Bach, a couple of broadway-type shows, and stuff out of various instructional books. I'm not a sight reader by any means, I just take little bits and memorize them quickly. I've learned lots of solos and tunes by ear also. Everyone learns differently. You should just do what comes naturally and feels good. B-)
  12. I find guitar tablature to be rather cumbersome. My preferred method is ear+standard notation.
  13. The stakes are high and so am I....
  14. YES!!!!!
  15. I think that shot was from the Love of Bad Medicine period. Bad Medicine. What happened to the love of Good Music???
  16. This just in from the "I did not know that" department: That beats out the 27 heys in Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love by a longshot!
  17. Now we're cookin'!
  18. Thought I could do a little better than the lame cliche I tossed out way past my bedtime last night... I just want to say that I really dig having you around here Paul. The way you express your point of view (and the views you hold) always makes me feel a kindred spirit. Keep it coming my friend, and enjoy the day.
  19. B-) You da man!
  20. More wacky visuals popping up...
  21. The Beast packs a lunch?
  22. "the baddest bassist in the land.... WILLIE WEEKS Y'ALL!" That's the second time in two days that someone has mentioned him.
  23. Well we definitely need a headbangin' smiley!
  24. Still, I'm partial to Powerslave. :rsmile:
