Bruce Springsteen ESSENTIALS
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Tjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
fer certain! I remember he opened up those '78 summer shows w/ "Summertime Blues" and then did an extra work out on the Stones "Not Fade Away" right into "G L O R I A" and that Bo Diddley jungle version of "She's the One" Burning it down all the way! It wasn't ever like he was pushing goods during the old tours, just playing like no tomorrow. -
Bruce Springsteen ESSENTIALS
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Tjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Any clean issues of the '78 (?) shows from the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland(played the heck out of those cassette FM dupes) available. Missed going to that one as it was a "draw" lottery but stayed up many nights or drove down to the post office right next to the Cleveland Colliseum for Springsteen shows in the late seventies. Them tickets were like $7.50 and the shows were, what, FOUR HOURS! You can't get a kid to shovel the drive for that and guaranteed he won't finish it off with CC Rider and Devil in a Blue Dress! ... and, yes, "Held Up without a Gun" is a great B-side.... that needle used to fly across that one. Changing 45s... how inconvenient. -
Marc Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos
Man with the Golden Arm replied to mikeweil's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
The difference between them discos IMO is Medeski vs Anthony Coleman. Medeski seems to have more a grasp of the groove created by Ribot and the rhythm team that is rooted a bit more in the afro than Coleman who seems to tinker about and let those Sun Ra echos in his head come to play. Both good and even better as a whole all smattered about on a single disc. Any ever heard his Haitian music explorations? but please yall go here: afraid?, no... -
yikes! i don't think the entire state of Utah sold for that!

not that anyone should click that to start the day, but shit, that is damn powerful and hardly gratuitous. especially had i not known the subject content prior. -
I've got a Sinatra Capitol from the late fifties that had the shrink wrap on it from a place called the Jazz Mart (?) and a price tag of $1.47!

Best of the BN Mitchell's IMO and yes, look for that TOCJ. Too much weird stuff going on in the Mosaic as I recall.

Favorite Stevie Wonder album
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Alon Marcus's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I voted up 'Innervisions' as well but looking at 'Songs in the Key of Life' had me thinking that that would have been more of a classic than it is had it been a single LP. Nothing wrong with the whole weave that was there and I always loved pulling out the 45 to play "Saturn" and "Ebony Eyes". But if "Knocks Me Off My Feet", "Pastime Paradise", "Ordinary Pain", "As", "Another Star" aren't the basic root of today's neo-soul then I don't know what. -

i'm gonna go home and see if my LP still smells. Not as bad as you might remember it being! The words are goofy as hell, but the music itself is pretty darn interesting more often than not. no, no. that album was the whole 'sensory thing' at the time and had been olfactorily embibed with lavendar or rose as well as having the braile embossing. a literal smell! -
Joe Williams and Ben Webster???!!!

The worst CD collection ever
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
if this is true and you did in fact have Money Jungle lying around i can only imagine that Max and Mingus would walk over and kick it's ass! -
Not a bad magazine perse, but I don't get it anymore merely because these days they are so heavily laden with all the paper manufacturer's and photo stock ads and lack for really good stuff. Here in the states Print, How, Step By Step, Graphis etc... are always offering a 'free trial issue'. Seems by doing that that I get a few issues of each a year, gratis. Maybe look out for annuals or even try eBay for back issues. Sold my collection of old Print regional annuals last summer and was surprised at the popularity.

Blindfold Test .:.23 DISC TWO Answers
Man with the Golden Arm replied to .:.impossible's topic in Blindfold Test
Harrumph! Fantastically astute writings on both of these threads, Cary. Some of those cats over in the "jazz in print forum" might be hitting you up for tips. One of the greatest things about these BFTs is the individual feeling within so much of the compiler's mission. .:. proved it. Thanks for the great discs and I plan to revisit them with the education now on the wall. -
Well if it wasn't for Les Baxter, Denny would be less ... and if it wasn't for Denny, Les wouldn't be more... kind of a rhino / tic bird thing. and if it wasn't for the chics that Esquivel guy would be wishing he were Carl Stallings.

I'd like to think I'd heard that somewhere before, but no, it's an instant classic.

That must be the program where Zorn & Sandborn were playing the Ornette/Spy vs Spy material (am I imagining this?). I know they did a gig together with that material in NYC around that time. That line up sounds very fun!. Sure wish I'd seen that Spy vs Spy live w/ Sanborn and Berne along for the front line making it a menage a trio of sorts. Have not played my only Sanborn record, "Another Hand", in quite some time but that was a good group at top of game on there. My only recollection of the Night Music show was a one featuring Arto's Ambitious Lovers. Never got to see them live either. Sorry, but that 'Greed' album is still in my top ten! This thread kind of parallels that smoov jazz one in so far as artists who've taken another route but have the chops to drop it all and come back and play stuff we'd like!

Oh, Tom in RI that does sound good! I saw the Kip Hanrahan "Exotica" show at the Strand in Dorchester circa 1989 with Pullen and all the gang. They were essentially practicing for the big Brooklyn Academy gigs. That was a fantastic show and more of a stage play than anything. My wife and I got to go to the after party with a journalist friend and met Don. Looking back fifteen years I sure wish I could go see that show again. But Tom some of the best shows for pure sweat and dance frenzies were by that "house band" at Lupos!
