  1. Not a bad magazine perse, but I don't get it anymore merely because these days they are so heavily laden with all the paper manufacturer's and photo stock ads and lack for really good stuff. Here in the states Print, How, Step By Step, Graphis etc... are always offering a 'free trial issue'. Seems by doing that that I get a few issues of each a year, gratis. Maybe look out for annuals or even try eBay for back issues. Sold my collection of old Print regional annuals last summer and was surprised at the popularity.
  2. Harrumph! Fantastically astute writings on both of these threads, Cary. Some of those cats over in the "jazz in print forum" might be hitting you up for tips. One of the greatest things about these BFTs is the individual feeling within so much of the compiler's mission. .:. proved it. Thanks for the great discs and I plan to revisit them with the education now on the wall.
  3. Well if it wasn't for Les Baxter, Denny would be less ... and if it wasn't for Denny, Les wouldn't be more... kind of a rhino / tic bird thing. and if it wasn't for the chics that Esquivel guy would be wishing he were Carl Stallings.
  4. I'd like to think I'd heard that somewhere before, but no, it's an instant classic.
  5. That must be the program where Zorn & Sandborn were playing the Ornette/Spy vs Spy material (am I imagining this?). I know they did a gig together with that material in NYC around that time. That line up sounds very fun!. Sure wish I'd seen that Spy vs Spy live w/ Sanborn and Berne along for the front line making it a menage a trio of sorts. Have not played my only Sanborn record, "Another Hand", in quite some time but that was a good group at top of game on there. My only recollection of the Night Music show was a one featuring Arto's Ambitious Lovers. Never got to see them live either. Sorry, but that 'Greed' album is still in my top ten! This thread kind of parallels that smoov jazz one in so far as artists who've taken another route but have the chops to drop it all and come back and play stuff we'd like!
  6. Oh, Tom in RI that does sound good! I saw the Kip Hanrahan "Exotica" show at the Strand in Dorchester circa 1989 with Pullen and all the gang. They were essentially practicing for the big Brooklyn Academy gigs. That was a fantastic show and more of a stage play than anything. My wife and I got to go to the after party with a journalist friend and met Don. Looking back fifteen years I sure wish I could go see that show again. But Tom some of the best shows for pure sweat and dance frenzies were by that "house band" at Lupos!
  7. Wasn't Paris Hilton blind-folded in hers?
  8. Tim Berne with Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey are in town this weekend. I've never seen Tim Berne live but know he can cook it up. This group has a recent release as well. Some freak out going on the samples here (a couple recorded up in ann arbor): screwgun. Looking for a take on this trio from the all knowing ears. Thanks.
  9. Easy on the grease in that recipe next time! Happy Birthday Big AL! (cake comes with an mp3 of MacArthur Park)
  10. from the alps to the green mountains and down to the snow by the sea. thanks, flubu.
  11. What irks me about the whole smooth jazz stereotype is that these are now amongst it!
  12. Did not see this thread when I posted my redundancy at the same time in the "jazz in print..." forum (it is jazz and it is in print) and have since deleted it per request of deus62. Much better w/ the pics. Since folks' hairs have been crossing their asses about all thats copyright-able I chose to go w/ the link.
  13. wasn't it JimR who put up that "Happy Birthday to Everybody!" thread? so Happy Birthday to JimR and everybody!
  14. the other is the leslie mouse - this would be that future mickey you speak of:
  15. Curious to any opinions or discussion on this nearly latest release by Frisell. I sampled a bit and from what I hear it sounds rather nice in that it harkens back to those early days of "Is that You?" and such. Seeing that this took the top Grammy, not that that should account for anything, has me interested.
  16. tsk, tsk, don't go selling yerself so short here. your'e just sandbaggn' for #29 ain'tcha. I too enjoy reading each and every comment posting, whenever it's posted. I even read the threads when I decided to take a time out from a couple of these. All about sharing our love of the art.
  17. Guilty as well and have recently deleted a thread in LF myself. We can certainly all fly under the radar.
  18. now we know how he keeps that nappy glow! WHAT IS TRULY AMAZING IS THAT HE CAN SLURR W/ THE KEYBOARD.
  19. I did some perusing and listened to a bit of "Shake". Sounds very interesting. I do see that there are vocals here? In abundance?? That only flies so far for me. I did check a bit of Vijay Iyler and Mike Ladd on iTunes. That was good to here just once maybe. Then again I must be compulsive to such modernity as I saw your signature as saying: "Brought to you through the courtney love"
  20. well I clicked that one as well. mike ladd? who!? might need to as my poo-pooing of Shipp's last one "Harmony and Abyss" is beginning to smell a bit better. che, I urge you to try Shipp's "Equilibrium". NOW! Has some of that techno to it but it's real... just like them dancers that just jumped on top of my speakers.
  21. I cut the heads off of many people for that one. Do you think it was worth it? let 'em roll! makes it even more endearing knowing that.
