  1. Yeah, I really wish more of the Jimmy Dorsey band from that period would get re-issued. GRP/Decca's CONTRASTS is pretty much it... I have both Circle CDs as well, which cover 1939-1940. There's a Bluebird CD of Sy Oliver's arrangements with T. Dorsey that may still float around used, called YES INDEED! Glad to hear some love for TD and JD from you two! Allen, you are so right, anything with Dave Tough is wonderful, their version of Twilight in Turkey is the best, IMO. Ghost, I love the Post War years cd too! I seem to recall mentioning that period of his band, but some didn't like Charlie Shavers sound with it...Ghost, if you have the Jazz Archives cd, listen to Tommy Dorsey's trombone solo on the first take of Who Stole the Lock? amazing 15-20 second solo, he must have been quite drunk at the time! Any if people have never heard Tommy play the trumpet back in the late 20's, please, please when you can, hear it! It will make you wish he had stuck with it instead of the trombone, and I like his trombone playing! As for JD...someday I will write a long boring thread on him, until then, a short boring post! durn tootin' there ain't near enough Jimmy Dorsey on cd! I had hoped since Classics did his brother, they wouldn't skip Jimmy as too commercial, but so far, no dice. I feel he was an invertebrate improviser, and hope someday he will get his due, and will be thought of as more than merely a good technician. A couple of cds worth checking out if you don't have them is the Complete standard Transcriptions cd from Soundies, which was recorded in the late 40's(Amazing sound quality) and has a nice 20+ minute interview with Jimmy to boot! They play the Finger Bustin' record, which even though one of his most famous tunes, doesn't appear on any cd as far as I can tell! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:yk9ss32la3vg(oh, Amazon does have this cd for sale, $21.98 new, or $4 used!) Also, Jasmine has a very nice cd with record and live tracks.... Jasmine cd, Stop Look and Listen: The Less Familiar Dorsey Finally from the el-cheapo label Fabulous, a cd called I got Rhythm, which has almost all the high end cut out, and has many of the tracks from the the Decca cd, but a few I haven't found elsewhere. "Fabulous" cd
  2. No joke, In Jacksonville, I kinda sorta ran a red light (I say bumper was in the intersection when the light was yellow) and the cop that pulled me over....had liquor on his breath! It was nighttime, and had visions of him thinking I knew he had been drinking, and that I would have to disappear. So, he came back after checking out my "record" for about 10 minutes(And me really to peel out if he said anything strange) he handed me back my info, and he was just reeking of smoke...cigarette smoke. Good, I would live to see another sunrise......
  3. Don't you mean...They blowed up real good? I'm all for people having guns , but shit...letting your 6 year old daughter shoot that machine gun????
  4. They make their southern neighbors seem almost normal! Former Canadian Minister Of Defence Asks Canadian Parliament Asked To Hold Hearings On Relations With Alien "Et" Civilizations Thu Nov 24, 7:00 AM ET (PRWEB) - OTTAWA, CANADA (PRWEB) November 24, 2005 -- A former Canadian Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister under Pierre Trudeau has joined forces with three Non-governmental organizations to ask the Parliament of Canada to hold public hearings on Exopolitics -- relations with “ETs.” By “ETs,” Mr. Hellyer and these organizations mean ethical, advanced extraterrestrial civilizations that may now be visiting Earth. On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canada’s Defence Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head." Mr. Hellyer went on to say, "I'm so concerned about what the consequences might be of starting an intergalactic war, that I just think I had to say something." Hellyer revealed, "The secrecy involved in all matters pertaining to the Roswell incident was unparalled. The classification was, from the outset, above top secret, so the vast majority of U.S. officials and politicians, let alone a mere allied minister of defence, were never in-the-loop." Hellyer warned, "The United States military are preparing weapons which could be used against the aliens, and they could get us into an intergalactic war without us ever having any warning. He stated, "The Bush administration has finally agreed to let the military build a forward base on the moon, which will put them in a better position to keep track of the goings and comings of the visitors from space, and to shoot at them, if they so decide." Hellyer’s speech ended with a standing ovation. He said, "The time has come to lift the veil of secrecy, and let the truth emerge, so there can be a real and informed debate, about one of the most important problems facing our planet today." Three Non-governmental organizations took Hellyer’s words to heart, and approached Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, to hold public hearings on a possible ET presence, and what Canada should do. The Canadian Senate, which is an appointed body, has held objective, well-regarded hearings and issued reports on controversial issues such as same-sex marriage and medical marijuana, On October 20, 2005, the Institute for Cooperation in Space requested Canadian Senator Colin Kenny, Senator, Chair of The Senate Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence, “schedule public hearings on the Canadian Exopolitics Initiative, so that witnesses such as the Hon. Paul Hellyer, and Canadian-connected high level military-intelligence, NORAD-connected, scientific, and governmental witnesses facilitated by the Disclosure Project and by the Toronto Exopolitics Symposium can present compelling evidence, testimony, and Public Policy recommendations.” The Non-governmental organizations seeking Parliament hearings include Canada-based Toronto Exopolitics Symposium, which organized the University of Toronto Symposium at which Mr. Hellyer spoke. The Disclosure Project, a U.S.– based organization that has assembled high level military-intelligence witnesses of a possible ET presence, is also one of the organizations seeking Canadian Parliament hearings. Vancouver-based Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS), whose International Director headed a proposed 1977 Extraterrestrial Communication Study for the White House of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who himself has publicly reported a 1969 Close Encounter of the First Kind with a UFO, filed the original request for Canadian Parliament hearings. The Canadian Exopolitics Initiative, presented by the organizations to a Senate Committee panel hearing in Winnipeg, Canada, on March 10, 2005, proposes that the Government of Canada undertake a Decade of Contact. The proposed Decade of Contact is “a 10-year process of formal, funded public education, scientific research, educational curricula development and implementation, strategic planning, community activity, and public outreach concerning our terrestrial society’s full cultural, political, social, legal, and governmental communication and public interest diplomacy with advanced, ethical Off-Planet cultures now visiting Earth.” Canada has a long history of opposing the basing of weapons in Outer Space. On September 22, 2004 Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin declared to the U.N. General Assembly,” "Space is our final frontier. It has always captured our imagination. What a tragedy it would be if space became one big weapons arsenal and the scene of a new arms race. Martin stated, "In 1967, the United Nations agreed that weapons of mass destruction must not be based in space. The time has come to extend this ban to all weapons..." In May, 2003, speaking before the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Lloyd Axworthy, stated “Washington's offer to Canada is not an invitation to join America under a protective shield, but it presents a global security doctrine that violates Canadian values on many levels." Axworthy concluded, “There should be an uncompromising commitment to preventing the placement of weapons in space.” On February 24, 2005, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin made official Canada's decision not to take part in the U.S government’s Ballistic Missile Defence program. Paul Hellyer, who now seeks Canadian Parliament hearings on relations with ETs, on May 15, 2003, stated in Toronto’s Globe & Mail newspaper, “Canada should accept the long-standing invitation of U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio to launch a conference to seek approval of an international treaty to ban weapons in space. That would be a positive Canadian contribution toward a more peaceful world.” In early November 2005, the Canadian Senate wrote ICIS, indicating the Senate Committee could not hold hearings on ETs in 2005, because of their already crowded schedule. “That does not deter us,” one spokesperson for the Non-governmental organizations said, “We are going ahead with our request to Prime Minister Paul Martin and the official opposition leaders in the House of Commons now, and we will re-apply with the Senate of Canada in early 2006. “Time is on the side of open disclosure that there are ethical Extraterrestrial civilizations visiting Earth,” The spokesperson stated. “Our Canadian government needs to openly address these important issues of the possible deployment of weapons in outer war plans against ethical ET societies.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/prweb/20051124/bs_...b/prweb314382_1
  5. No joke, I first read the thread's title as useless information may improve memory If that were only true! Did you know that in 1969, there were 2447 Impalas SuperSports?

  7. I say, I say, I say son, I may be from Cardinal country but I'm from the Land of Lincoln. (The town is my handle) Not important to anyone else, but when you grow up on the right side of the Mississippi you just gotta say so. Well if you are looking at a map of the U.S. you grew up on the right side, but otherwise.... Of course, you could have also pointed out that your handle has 6 letters, and mine really has 7(I blame putting an 's on Quincy ) Quincy, Illinois! Oh, that rings a distant bell(Haven't lived in Stl. in 22 years) How far is it from St. Louis?
  8. Everyone loved this one!
  9. DTMX, congrats on the job! Are you now Suchita Vadlamani's personal masseuse? Also, many thanks for giving me credit for a thread I didn't start! Quincy's from Missiouri and is a Cardinal fan, as am I , both of our handles have 6 letters in them, so I can see why you may have confused us! Churchill Grounds eh? Better than the very tired ol' jazzmen at Dante's? I'll have to check it out someday!
  10. Carlos Delgado wouldn't stand up for the national anthem when he played for Toronto, how could he play for Steinbrenner????
  11. I think that's indeed what they did, Bruce. I'll still be curious to see it...and it's not included in the film itself, but as an extra on the second disk. I'm actually interested in seeing the remake... the trailer hooked me. Gotta be better than that blasted mid-70's affair (though it did jumpstart Jessica Lange's career, and for that I guess we can be grateful). I gotta agree with Bruce on this one. What is the point??? The ads on TV make me think the CGI is terrible, which I don't quite understand. Did you see trailer in a theatre??? Perhaps it will look better on the big screen.
  12. It was raining , 37 degrees with a 30+ MPH wind last night, I kid you not!!! It was colder in the ATL than in much of the U.S. for some reason. Spot global cooling I guess.
  13. He looks like a giant head riding in some sort of psychedelic cartoon car. But yes, he has a quiet dignity.
  14. The funniest unemployed guy on the board! Hope you have a great birthday! Go to one of dozens of top notch jazz clubs in Atlanta why don't ya! :rsmile: Well, the High has Friday night jazz at least....
  15. There may be a good deli in Atlanta, but I have yet to find it. Jacksonville was worse. Every time I go to L.A., I HAVE to go to Jerry's famous Deli. The Roast beef... Damn, my mouth is dying for one now!!!
  16. cartoon violence is the worst violence.
  17. That works. Squirrels dig bird feeders. ← We had a house in Jacksonville that was a funky flatroofed thing, with roof overhangs, and a wall on one side that went past the end of the roof(Yes, the house was a site to behold) anyway, we had a birdfeeder hanging down from underside the of the roof...about 2 feet away from the floor to ceiling glass windows. So, we had a great view of kamikaze squirrels leaping from the wall hitting the feeder, then dropping to the brick patio to eat. Then, our cats would run full speed into the glass trying to get the squirrel. Animals are dumb.
  18. Marriage is a bigger deal in the south Jazzmoose.....

  21. Gotta love the little twerp neighbor who felt so compelled to turn her in for this heinous crime..... Don't feed the squirrels? Nuts to you, she says St. Petersburg Times November 18. 2005 6:01AM EAST LAKE - Her name is Frances, almost like the saint. And like St. Francis of Assisi, Frances Mirowski loves animals. She has had three dogs in her lifetime but has decided that's enough. It hurts too much when they die. The mother of five has been widowed twice. She's 82 years old. She's survived four heart attacks and can't travel past her yard without a wheelchair. Her world now is contained within her villa in the Salem Square subdivision in East Lake, where a statue of St. Francis stands guard at her door and another sits in her atrium, a bird on his shoulder, a bunny at his feet. She begins every day feeding bread crumbs and peanuts to the birds and squirrels in her yard. She says it's one of life's few remaining joys. "I wait for the day to begin because I have something to do," she said. Then last Thursday, she got a letter demanding that she stop. For 12 years, no one said a peep about the bathrobe-clad woman's morning routine. Maybe they weren't outside at 7 a.m. to see the seven or eight squirrels waiting for her by the oak tree. Maybe they didn't see anything wrong in it, or didn't care. But this year, someone in this subdivision of 107 units complained. On Thursday, Mirowski received a letter from Ronald J. Costa, the property manager for her subdivision. "We are informing you to cease and desist feeding the wildlife," it reads. She was in violation of a county ordinance against feeding wildlife, the letter says. By feeding the community's wild critters, she could be luring coyotes and disease to the neighborhood. She cried. She feared the police would come, and was afraid of being fined. "I couldn't believe this was happening," Mirowski said. "I never broke the law for any reason." Her son, Bill Ploplis, has written to the American Civil Liberties Union. "A person her age doing something quite innocent and getting a formal, negative response is not right," he said. Despite the letter, Mirowski doesn't appear to be violating anything. There is no state law or county ordinance against feeding birds or squirrels. According to state law, Mirowski would only be in violation if she were feeding alligators, foxes, raccoons, sandhill cranes or bears. In an e-mail, Lisa A. Baltus, senior environmental specialist for Pinellas County and Brooker Creek Preserve land manager, told Bill Ploplis that a county ordinance against feeding wildlife applies only to raccoons, possums and similar wild animals. The letter came in response to comments at the annual homeowners meeting in October, during which some homeowners complained about other residents feeding wildlife, said Peggy Psaledakis, former president of the Salem Square Homeowners Association. "As a result, they were getting rodents and blackbirds and those wood storks," Psaledakis said. "There are a lot of owners that are upset with it and concerned with the types of food being fed to the wildlife." At the meeting, Heritage Property Management, Inc., the subdivision's management company, was told to send all residents letters advising them not to feed the wildlife, Psaledakis said. It's not clear why only Mirowski got a letter, but Tom DiGangi, president of the homeowners association, said he reminded Costa to send a letter to everybody. Costa declined to comment. DiGangi said the association can't stop Mirowski from feeding the animals, but it is asking her to cooperate, perhaps by switching to a bird feeder. Psaledakis said the community has had problems with bobcats and raccoons. Residents have been advised to use bungee cords to keep their trash lids shut, she said. Because they live near Brooker Creek Preserve, residents see a lot of small wildlife, said DiGangi, who said he hasn't seen any coyotes in the area. "We're constantly on guard," DiGangi said. However innocent Mirowski's intentions, feeding wild animals just isn't a good idea, said Gary Morse, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "Feeding wildlife is not recommended because it causes animals to lose their natural fear of people," Morse said. The squirrels could set up house in and around her house, causing property damage, he said. Plus, bread is considered junk food for birds. But Mirowski doesn't intend to stop tossing out bread crumbs and peanuts. "It's my only joy for the day," she said.
