Even though I knew he was in his 80's still a bit of a shock, he always looked so young for his age! R.I.P. Actor Ossie Davis dies The Associated Press February 4, 2005, 11:06 AM EST Miami -- Ossie Davis, an actor distinguished for roles dealing with racial injustice on stage, screen and in real life -- and perhaps best known as the husband and partner of actress Ruby Dee -- has died at the age of 87. Davis was found dead on Friday in his hotel room in Miami, where he was making a film called "Retirement," according to Arminda Thomas, who works in his office in New Rochelle, N.Y. Davis, who wrote, acted, directed and produced for the theater and Hollywood, was a central figure among black performers of the last five decades. He and Dee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998 with the publication of a dual autobiography, "In This Life Together." Their partnership called to mind other performing couples, such as the Lunts, or Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. Davis and Dee first appeared together in the plays "Jeb," in 1946, and "Anna Lucasta," in 1946-47. Davis' first film, "No Way Out" in 1950, was Dee's fifth. They shared billing in 11 stage productions and five movies during long parallel careers. Both had key roles in the television series "Roots: The Next Generation" (1978), "Martin Luther King: The Dream and the Drum" (1986) and "The Stand" (1994). Davis appeared in three Spike Lee films, including "School Daze," "Do the Right Thing" and "Jungle Fever." Dee also appeared in the latter two; among her best-known films was "A Raisin in the Sun," in 1961. In 2004, he and Dee were among the artists selected to receive the Kennedy Center Honors.

What does everybody collect besides music?
BERIGAN replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
If I were rich, like you I would have a huge honkin' collection of classic films on DVD. I do have quite the collection(Taped off TV) of 30's, and 40's films deteriorating quite nicely on beta and VHS . I used to collect coins when I was a kid, but once silver went to 50 bucks an ounce in 80/81, that put an end to it...... -

Fallen U.S. Porn King Goldstein Rebuilds With Bagels By John Zawadzinski NEW YORK (Reuters) - He spent a lifetime peddling smut and once had an $11 million fortune, but after losing everything and becoming just another homeless New Yorker, Al Goldstein is now happy pushing bagels instead of porn. Goldstein, a founding father of America's porn industry, now hustles bagels and white fish at a New York-based deli and catering establishment. "I've always loved food more than sex, so this is really my first love," said Goldstein, 69, now a cold-calling salesman for New York City Bagels. "I've gone from broads to bagels." Goldstein has good reason to feel good about his new career, however mundane, after becoming homeless last year when the porn empire he began building in 1968 collapsed. The former owner of Milky Way Productions, home of Screw magazine and the now defunct X-rated cult show "Midnight Blue," went bankrupt over a year ago after amassing an $11 million fortune. Screw once sold over 140,000 copies weekly and was a cash cow thanks to ads for call girls and prostitutes before it fell victim to Internet porn and sagging circulation. "The Internet made pornography available for free and I couldn't compete," said Goldstein, who now lives on Staten Island, with his fifth wife, Christine, 28. Those he befriended in the porn business, a billion-dollar industry he helped pioneer, turned their backs to him. Even his own son, Jordan, a Harvard graduate who works for a New York-based law firm, refuses to speak to him. "My life has turned to crap," Goldstein said. "To go from a being a millionaire and then living in a homeless shelter and being rejecting by 98 percent of your friends is horrendous, but I'm a survivor." PASSION FOR BAGELS Goldstein was hired late last year as a greeter at New York's 2nd Avenue Deli, paid $10 an hour to welcome customers and show them to their tables. He held the position for a few months but was fired when it was discovered he was sleeping in the restaurant. Now he works at New York City Bagels on commission, cold calling customers to generate corporate accounts. "Al is very passionate about the work and he brings a lot to the table," said Glenn Teyf, one of the owners of New York City Bagels, who hired Goldstein more than a month ago on a referral. "Al Goldstein by far has increased our business." Goldstein's current occupation and lifestyle are worlds apart from where he once was. He lost his $2.5 million Pompano Beach, Florida, mansion and his townhouse on New York's East 61st Street, which were both sold to pay of his debts. As a result, he was reduced to sleeping at his in-laws' house and homeless shelters. He slept in Central Park and last year was arrested for allegedly shoplifting books from the Barnes and Noble near Lincoln Center. Gone are the chauffeur, his collection of wine, the Cuban cigars and the parties at New York's legendary Plato's Retreat and Studio 54. He now travels to and from Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, shops at thrift stores and is perfectly content with staying home and watching the History Channel and Court TV. "I don't live in yesterday and I don't live in tomorrow. I live in today," he said. "Just when you think you're done, life becomes different." COOK THE HAWK Goldstein's fall from grace brought a fresh round of press coverage, including a New Yorker article that called him one of New York's two most famous homeless citizens -- the other being the famed hawk Pale Male whose nest was destroyed by a Fifth Avenue apartment building co-op board. Always good for a lively quote, the former porn king told the New Yorker, "If the hawk can't cut it, if it can't carry its own weight, cook the damn thing." "There are thousands of homeless people around, sleeping in hallways, and nobody cares. But one hawk living on Fifth Avenue gets all the publicity," he said. Despite his hardships, Goldstein is thankful for those who have stuck by him and supported him including his lawyer Charles C. DeStefano, who met Goldstein five years ago and began representing him on a pro-bono basis during his trial for harassing a former secretary as well as an ex-wife. Like Pale Male, who was allowed to nest again on Fifth Avenue after protests by bird lovers and residents including actress Mary Tyler Moore, Goldstein is no longer homeless. He now lives in a Staten Island apartment after magician Penn Jillette, of the duo Penn and Teller, helped him out financially to get him back on his feet. "I think Al's had an epiphany and is on an upswing," DeStefano said. "He is such a resilient character. He's bounced back like a rubber ball." Goldstein, who works at New York City Bagels five days a week, is enthusiastic about his latest venture and the potential for him to make big bucks on commission. "I'm in a business that to me, is more dynamic than pornography," he said. "I could do many things, but people who typecast me as just a pornographer, they're just stupid." http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp...=20050124NYK803

'If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits' By Clare Chapman (Filed: 30/01/2005) A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing "sexual services'' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year. Prostitution was legalised in Germany just over two years ago and brothel owners – who must pay tax and employee health insurance – were granted access to official databases of jobseekers. The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe. She received a letter from the job centre telling her that an employer was interested in her "profile'' and that she should ring them. Only on doing so did the woman, who has not been identified for legal reasons, realise that she was calling a brothel. Under Germany's welfare reforms, any woman under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job – including in the sex industry – or lose her unemployment benefit. Last month German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to 4.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest since reunification in 1990. The government had considered making brothels an exception on moral grounds, but decided that it would be too difficult to distinguish them from bars. As a result, job centres must treat employers looking for a prostitute in the same way as those looking for a dental nurse. When the waitress looked into suing the job centre, she found out that it had not broken the law. Job centres that refuse to penalise people who turn down a job by cutting their benefits face legal action from the potential employer. "There is now nothing in the law to stop women from being sent into the sex industry," said Merchthild Garweg, a lawyer from Hamburg who specialises in such cases. "The new regulations say that working in the sex industry is not immoral any more, and so jobs cannot be turned down without a risk to benefits." Miss Garweg said that women who had worked in call centres had been offered jobs on telephone sex lines. At one job centre in the city of Gotha, a 23-year-old woman was told that she had to attend an interview as a "nude model", and should report back on the meeting. Employers in the sex industry can also advertise in job centres, a move that came into force this month. A job centre that refuses to accept the advertisement can be sued. Tatiana Ulyanova, who owns a brothel in central Berlin, has been searching the online database of her local job centre for recruits. "Why shouldn't I look for employees through the job centre when I pay my taxes just like anybody else?" said Miss Ulyanova. Ulrich Kueperkoch wanted to open a brothel in Goerlitz, in former East Germany, but his local job centre withdrew his advertisement for 12 prostitutes, saying it would be impossible to find them. Mr Kueperkoch said that he was confident of demand for a brothel in the area and planned to take a claim for compensation to the highest court. Prostitution was legalised in Germany in 2002 because the government believed that this would help to combat trafficking in women and cut links to organised crime. Miss Garweg believes that pressure on job centres to meet employment targets will soon result in them using their powers to cut the benefits of women who refuse jobs providing sexual services. "They are already prepared to push women into jobs related to sexual services, but which don't count as prostitution,'' she said. "Now that prostitution is no longer considered by the law to be immoral, there is really nothing but the goodwill of the job centres to stop them from pushing women into jobs they don't want to do." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml.../30/wgerm30.xml

It's funny, but until Don Baylor came to town, I never heard a discouraging word about Sosa. Then Dusty said some things as well...he might be a bit of a prima donna, but he plays hard, and usually plays most of his teams games. Don and Dusty should have talked to him in private, not thru the media. Being the DH once in a while will help him rest a bit. I am pissed at the Cubs organision right now. Not only did they poison their relationship with Sosa, but they were asses to Steve Stone as well. Stone was a bit of a Rah-Rah guy for years, he showed some real backbone last year calling the Cubs on their late season choke. He was rewarded with being forced out. Well, Chip Carey left as well so now they have an all new broadcast team. I still hope for long suffering fans that they do win...

It's interesting seeing how many of us have similar tales....remembering what a treat it was to stay up late as a kid on a friday night, or during the summer and seeing the show(Perhaps your parents didn't know you had turned the tv back on) So many comedians owed their career to him....He was the best at interviewing , Jay and Dave have gotten better through the years, but nowhere near his ability. Just a very likable guy, who made the difficult seem easy. Anyone catch those people who filled in after Kilborn left CBS??? Yikes!!! I loved catching Buddy Rich on Carson, Carson didn't go on the air the day Rich died. Joe Williams was his favorite singer, I believe, he was on all the time....

Fish Discovered With Human Face Pattern
BERIGAN replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Looks like a cat head to me. I thought that as well, but I wasn't going to carp on it.... -
Fish Discovered With Human Face Pattern A fish that has a pattern resembling a human face on its body was found in a pond in Chongju, South Korea, according to a Local 6 News report. The news of a fish with a human face spread to South Korea through the Internet after a Japanese sports tabloid reported on the unusual fish. A South Korean newspaper then carried an article about the fish in South Korea. The fish is the result of artificial insemination between a carp and ayu sweetfish. As the fish grew larger, the design on the fish reportedly changed to look more like the face of a human being. Rare markings on a fish are considered a good omen in some Asian countries, according to a report. Watch Local 6 News for more on this story. http://www.local6.com/news/4112928/detail.html

You know, I tried my level best to be nice to you on this thread, pointed out to you that it was a Big time movie star doing Johnson's voice,(Something you clearly didn't know) a major star raised in the south no less, and you say you hope it doesn't bother me that all blacks don't sound like Steppin Fetchit. So please understand, this comes from my heart....FUCK YOU!!! I am sure you have some vendetta againt Ken Burns since he didn't think enough of you to put you in his documentary, but to think that this very clearly liberal man wants to somehow denigrate blacks, when as pointed out before just about every major documentary he has made in the last 10+ years(Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, Now Johnson) has delt with the descrimination blacks have suffered, just shows how very petty you are these days.

Samuel L. Jackson is his "voice" thru the documentary, I somehow feel wee Ken Burns didn't say to Mr. Jackson, talk like a negro! I was, of course, being facetious with that hypothetical request. But you might considerthe fact that Mr. Jackson is an actor and the voice he uses for Johnson is not the voice he uses in normal conversation--it is very clearly a case of deliberate dumbing down, which is what I found offensive and, frankly, racist. You would not readily understand the latter, but please try. Chris, I really think you are making mountains out of molehills. Samuel L. Jackson was raised in Tennessee, and he was "impersonating" the voice of a man born in Galveston, Texas who I believe only had 4 years of formal education. He didn't sound dumbed down, just southern. His words sounded pretty smart, but if Sidney Poitier had portrayed him, I would have been shocked!

I thought it was interesting in part 2 how they didn't run with the "He threw the fight" angle, which is what I had always heard. In fact, I thought there was film footage of the punch not hitting, along with his hands blocking the bright sun. Burt Sugar plainly stated that he (Johnson) more or less spasmed(can't recall his exact words) when he was knocked out and his arms went over his head. If you look at the photo again, his arms are over his face, but in the still they used, the sun was still on his closed eyes. Burns made a good argument that Johnson wasn't in as good a shape as he had been , his opponant was 27, and Johnson was 37 after all! In the earlier rounds, he was moving fine, but be the 20th (Yikes!!!) round, the film showed he was getting tired, rubber legged. And he was knocked out in the 26th. I have seen fights on tv where guys can't keep their arms up after the 7th round.

Weizy, I have a Phillips DVD recorder I got Christmas before last. DVDR-75. Just checked at Amazon, and the DVDR-77 is the same machine, except for a media slot. It is $269, I paid $400+ last year. This is a DVD+R, +RW machine. (Can't use the DVD-R -RW discs that seem to be a bit more common on the shelves) I can't say that I am too happy with the thing. If you record anything from tape to disc, if it isn't in the 1 or 2 hour mode it is a really crude copy. (Doesn't sound like it would be a big issue for you) The machine is very slow to react, I am forever turning it off cuz it doesn't seem like I turned it on(I did, it just takes 20-30 seconds to react-I joke that the tubes take awhile to warm up) It came with a 100+ page manual, that wasn't of much help. (In fact, never have had as much trouble hooking up a device as I did with this-the beta, laserdisc, and vhs just were not problems) It records live tv fine, but the 6 hour mode is not much better than a VHS mode, IMO. Not as good as my ol' Betamax in fact. 1 Hour mode is great, but not long enough for movies. I was forever having to "Finalize" discs, meaning I couldn't play a disc in another non Phillips DVD player, till I was finished recording it. And one in 10 discs would have an error(Usually, when I was filling up the last half hour on the disc) that would ruin the whole disc! Then, I found a stack of DVD-RW discs for about a buck a disc, no more formatting/finalizing issues, they will play on any machine, at any time. Wish I had known before, I will never buy another +R disc again. Prices are MUCH cheaper for discs than they were a year ago. In fact, if you shop around you can get name brand +RWs for less than a dollar a disc! I got 25 Memorex for $18 at fry's. With my machine though, it still is a little harder to erase a show than on VHS, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. Yeah, they put the recorders out too soon. So, long story longer, if you don't keep anything that you tape, look into a tivo or tivo like device. Thru Dish network, we can record upto a 100 hours on the satellite box hardrive, AND if you haven't changed channels, rewind "live" tv going back 2 hours!!!

Yikes !!! Something to hold over the kid for years and years, "Your mother was in labor for 100+ hours, so eat your carrots, dammit!" I hope the kid will be a happy, healthy and a future Republican! (Kids have to give their parents some grief!)

And I thought it was a thread about James Garner driving a Buick Electra! She is cute, and looks/acts like a much younger woman, it is hard to believe she is as old as she is.(Not OLD, just old)
