NBC announcer retires after 62 years NEW YORK (AP) — Through the eras of John Chancellor, Tom Brokaw and now Brian Williams, Howard Reig's voice also was heard when viewers heard they turned on the news. "This is NBC Nightly News," the clear baritone would say, ushering in headlines from Watergate to terrorism. Now 84, with a career that spans the very life of television itself, Reig retires Friday as NBC's last staff announcer. A gnomish figure who walks the halls of NBC's Rockefeller Center office with the help of two hearing aids and a pacemaker, he's been working for NBC and its parent General Electric for nearly 62 years. His role as staff announcer is usually limited to those few key words each day. Sometimes he'd even pretape them. Former "Nightly News" anchorman Tom Brokaw recalled Reig's nightly opening having a settling effect. "It would be chaos around here, with things happening all over the place and big news breaking, and I'd hear Howard's voice and know it was time to settle down and go to work," Brokaw said Thursday. With all his announcing work through the years, Reig is proud to be identified with the "NBC Nightly News." "I'm a news addict," he said. "I love being associated with the news. I think it is the most important part of our business — unfortunately surrounded by a tremendous amount of garbage." His career began in 1943 when, as a high school English teacher, he took a summer acting job at the GE-owned radio station WGY in Schenectady, N.Y., and its new sister station WRGB-TV. "They made me the first GE staff announcer — and the last," he said. (At one time NBC once had several announcers on staff, with duties that ranged from reading commercials to reading the news. Reig's voice will continue to be heard on tape awhile.) When he started, WRGB-TV didn't have a regular schedule. "The TV station went on the air whenever we pleased," he said. "Somebody would get on the phone and call the 200 or 300 people who had sets and tell them to turn on their TVs." Some days he'd arrive at the radio station for his morning music program, then do newscasts until noon, a talk show in the afternoon, and an evening variety show on television. He subsequently won a national announcing contest, which earned him a job with NBC in New York. He almost didn't last long. Reig was host of a classical music radio program that aired between midnight and 6 a.m. at WNBC. One night in 1952 he cued an hourlong symphony on the turntable and fell asleep. His engineer also dozed off; so did the person working the transmitter. For seven minutes, listeners heard the sound of a needle scratching at the end of a record. "I was sure I was going to get fired," he said. He was yelled at, but spared. Not bad for a man born with a heart condition and told by his parents that he'd probably only live to about 10 or 12. "I consider that I've lived a life of small miracles and some large," he said. He plans to move to Florida and live with one of his three sons, and dote on five grandchildren. "You have to face facts," he said. "When you're 84 the end of the road is not that far away and I want to spend as much time as I can with my grandchildren."

NC 17 joke...you have been warned.... As a woman passes her daughter's closed bedroom door, she heard a strange buzzing noise coming from within. Opening the door, she observed her daughter giving herself a real workout with a vibrator. Shocked, she asked; "What in the world are you doing?" The daughter replied: "Mum, I'm thirty-five years old, unmarried, and this thing is about as close as I'll ever get to a husband. Please, go away and leave me alone." The next day, the girl's father heard the same buzz coming from the other side of the closed bedroom door. Upon entering the room, he observed his daughter making passionate love to her vibrator. To his query as to what she was doing, the daughter said; "Dad, I'm thirty-five years old, unmarried, and this thing is about as close as I'll ever get to a husband. Please, go away and leave me alone." A couple days later, the wife came home from a shopping trip, placed the groceries on the kitchen counter, and heard that buzzing noise coming from, of all places, the living room. She entered that area and observed her husband sitting on the couch, downing a cold beer, and staring at the TV. The vibrator was next to him on the couch, buzzing like crazy. The wife asked; "What the hell are you doing?" The husband replied; "I'm watching football with my son-in-law."

Car Developer John DeLorean Dies at 80 25 minutes ago Top Stories - AP By JEFFREY GOLD, Associated Press Writer NEWARK, N.J. - John Z. DeLorean, the innovative automaker who left a promising career in Detroit to develop the stainless steel-skinned, gull-winged sports car bearing his name and was acquitted of charges he planned to sell $24 million worth of cocaine to support the venture, has died at the age of 80. DeLorean died Saturday at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J., of complications from a recent stroke, said Paul Connell, an owner of A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Directors in Royal Oak, Mich., which was handling arrangements. DeLorean, whose namesake car was turned into a time machine in the "Back to the Future" movies, was among just a handful of U.S. entrepreneurs who dared start a car company in the last 75 years. DeLorean "broke the mold" of staid Midwestern auto executives by pushing General Motors Corp. to offer smaller models, auto historians said. While at GM, he created what some consider the first "muscle car" in 1964 by cramming a V-8 engine into a Pontiac Tempest and calling it the GTO. Although he was a rising if unconventional executive at GM, and was believed by many to be destined for its presidency, he quit in 1973 to launch the DeLorean Motor Car Co. in Northern Ireland. Eight years later, the DeLorean DMC-12 hit the streets with its unpainted stainless steel skin and gull-wing doors. Its angular design earned it a cult following, and the car was a time-traveling vehicle for Michael J. Fox in the "Back to the Future" films of the late 1980s. However, the factory produced only about 8,900 cars in three years, estimated John Truscott, membership director of the DeLorean Owners Association. DeLorean's company collapsed in 1983, a year after he was arrested in Los Angeles, accused in a sting of conspiring to sell $24 million of cocaine to salvage the company. DeLorean used an entrapment defense to win acquittal on the drug charges in 1984, despite a surveillance videotape in which he was shown calling a suitcase full of cocaine "good as gold." He was later cleared of defrauding his investors, but continuing legal entanglements kept him on the sidelines of the automotive world. He declared bankruptcy in 1999.

Lawmaker Seeks to End Sexy Cheerleading Email this Story Mar 18, 7:42 AM (ET) By APRIL CASTRO AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Friday night lights in Texas could soon be without bumpin' and grindin' cheerleaders. Legislation filed by Rep. Al Edwards would put an end to "sexually suggestive" performances at athletic events and other extracurricular competitions. "It's just too sexually oriented, you know, the way they're shaking their behinds and going on, breaking it down," said Edwards, a 26-year veteran of the Texas House. "And then we say to them, 'don't get involved in sex unless it's marriage or love, it's dangerous out there' and yet the teachers and directors are helping them go through those kind of gyrations." Under Edwards' bill, if a school district knowingly permits such a performance, funds from the state would be reduced in an amount to be determined by the education commissioner. Edwards said he filed the bill as a result of several instances of seeing such ribald performances in his district. J.M. Farias, owner of Austin Cheer Factory, said cheerleading aficionados would welcome the law. Cheering competitions, he said, penalize for suggestive movements or any vulgarity. "Any coaches that are good won't put that in their routines," he said. And, most girls cheering on Friday nights were trained by professionals who know better, he said. "I don't think this law would really shake the industry at all. In fact, it would give parents a better feeling, mostly dads and boyfriends, too," Farias said. Although cheerleaders must meet the same no-pass, no-play academic requirements of athletes, cheerleading is not a competition sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of Texas high school sports. The UIL also does not have performance regulations for squads who cheer for their teams at state championships, said Athletic Coordinator Peter Contreras. "I think it should have been cut out a long time ago," Edwards said. "It surely needs to be toned down." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050318/D88TCPGO0.html

Left, voluntarily that is! Where to start??? I myself haven't had the time I had in the past to post much of anything on the board the last 5 months or so, but checking out the board every few days is like putting on a pair of comfortable shoes. (Hey, I'm sick, it's the best analogy I could think of!) So, it's sad to see so many people want to leave, in such a short period of time! Why are you all leaving???? There are now, what over a thousand members? Didn't someone mention that 4% (or 1 in 25 people) in the world could be classified as psychopaths?? Even though jazz folks should be better folks than the common rabble, there could be 40 people who post here that could literally stab you in the back, and then get a good night's sleep. I just mention this cuz, the more people who join this board, the more troublemakers will show up, just a fact of life. Why give those troublemakers any kind of victory?? People always react badly when someone is banned, yet if Greg M., DEEP, and Aric were not banned, many more people would have quit this board! Those 3 could bring something nice to the table, and did sometimes but they just didn't give a flying fuck about anyone besides themselves, they all liked to stir up trouble for trouble's sake. They paid the price. Ok. I think one member left because of Aric's departure, but what about the others??? I know I'm not telling anyone something they didn't know, but by and large, this board is about the most civil board around! Why leave this nice warm pool forever, just because some baby peed in the shallow end? We've got chlorine! Algaecide, acid! Please, we are such a tiny community as it is. What are guys gonna do, talk to your next door neighbor about jazz? (The only time that will happen is for him to tell you to turn that awful noise down!)We need Deus, Hans, King Ubu, and Brownie here. Get your asses back here, now! Please!

turnabout is fair play! Have a great one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
They just had a pretty obscure movie on TCM called Mokey, starring a very young "Bobby" Blake. Murder is wrong (Sometimes, you just gotta take a bold stand!) But, if there ever was someone asking to be killed, it was her. The story I read about her in the TV Guide a year or so ago, read like some crazy made up shit. No way after marrying him would she have a phone sex line, would she? Or still trying to find Johns, would she? She ripped off tons of old men, and no doubt thought she had a soft touch in Blake. He should have done some time, but I guess since they had a daughter, perhaps that played a role. Most likely, the prosecutors in La La land once again had a weak case against a killer.

Ok. This is weird. Mom called early this morning, sounding pretty good. But the sputum(Sp?) sample she gave Sunday came back, and she is contagious! Now the nurses are wearing masks when they come in. Of course, the 89 year old woman that Mom got as a roommate last night is still in there! Now I am wondering since it seems Dad and I have the same thing, just not as serious, are we contagious as well? When we saw the Doctor Monday (PA actually) no blood was taken. Supposedly, they will tell us more at the hospital later today. -
he shouldn't get one, cuz he's mean to pianos.

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone! We caught worst virus we have had in years, a week or so ago, and it put my Mom in the Hospital with pneumonia! She was being her usual stubborn self, saying it was just the flu, and she had an appointment Monday to see the doctor. (Amazing how a 64 year old woman with Cancer, diabetes, Heart problems, etc can keep her husband and son from calling for help) Well, Sunday she finally relented, and we called 911. Just in time, as she quickly went downhill in the E.R. Mom was really having trouble breathing, it still took them 6 hours to put her in a hospital room! She did get antibotics, and diuretics fairly quickly (her legs and right arm are quite swollen from the other health problems) Once in the room, they moved her from the ER Bed, to the hospital bed, which really made her out of breath, then 5 minutes later they wanted to get the old E.R. sheets out from under her, and look at a small bed sore. Well, that really made her breath labored, to say the least (I think getting on her left side where the Pneumonia is, did it) she grabbed my hand hard, and later said she thought she was going to die. No more moving her we said! I stayed til 6 am (Dad, who is 73 had lost his voice as well), then told my Dad to come watch over her. She was helpless as a baby the first 24 hours, her right arm is next to useless because of the lymph node damage from radiation, and the left had the I.V. in it. They finally used the port to her heart (for Chemo) and that freed up her left arm, so with her lungs getting a little better, were able to leave her alone for awhile. This hospital doesn't mind if you stay the night, but no foldout chair...should have asked if they had a bed they could have rolled in... Dad and I went to the doctor yesterday, and we both have broncitis, and the doc said my transisent Asthma was acting up as well. Both of Mom's sisters have died, and her 53 year old niece died last year, so just me and Dad to take care of her. So, for the first time I can remember, no birthday card, no gifts, no cake....But I got the best gift I could get, my Mom is still around! -

From Neal Boortz' site... By now most of you are aware of what happened here in Atlanta last Friday. A man on trial for rape escapes from a deputy sheriff in the courthouse, kills a judge, a court stenographer and a deputy sheriff. Hours later he kills an off-duty U.S. Customs Agent. He's captured the next day after holding a remarkable young woman named Ashley Smith in her apartment for hours. Here's a little Q&A to fill you in on some details: How did Brian Nichols get the gun in the first place? He overpowered a 51-year-old female deputy sheriff. Alone she escorted him into a holding area where she took off his handcuffs so that he could change into street clothes for trial. There seem to be a lot of details out there on how Nichols overpowered the deputy sheriff and got her gun. That's because it was all caught on tape. You mean there's a video? Exactly. There was a surveillance camera in the holding area where the attack took place. Was someone supposed to be monitoring the camera? There were two officers in the command center who were supposed to be monitoring the surveillance cameras. If they were, they didn't see this attack. It would seem safe to assume that they weren't exactly paying close attention to the cameras. Did the killer run from the courthouse after the shootings? Now there's an interesting question. That's what everybody thought. After all, he did shoot and kill a Deputy Sheriff as he left the courthouse. Things got a bit confusing though during a Friday afternoon press conference when Fulton County Sheriff Myron Freeman said that he "allegedly" ran from the courthouse. Allegedly? But then, the Sheriff used the "allegedly" word about six times in every sentence during his statements to the press. We may have questions about the abilities of the Sheriff of Fulton County and about his employees who protect the courthouse, but we now know that he sure does have a handle on the "allegedly" word. Were citizens alerted to be on the lookout for a particular type of car? Yes ... we were told all day Friday to be looking for a specific green Honda Accord. Did they ever find the Honda? Yup. Where was the green Honda Accord? It was right there in the parking garage next to the Courthouse. Right where the killer left it, and right smack in the middle of the largest concentration of law enforcement officers at that time in the entire Southeast. It took them 13 hours to find that Honda in the parking garage. Did a police officer or sheriff's deputy finally find the Honda? Nope. It was discovered by a co-worker of the Honda's owner late in the afternoon. So, how did the killer flee the area? Apparently he took MARTA, the rapid rail line, and headed North to Lenox Square. Well, if he took MARTA, why didn't they catch him as he was getting on or getting off a train? Surely they took steps to watch MARTA stations for the killer as soon as the shootings happened, didn't they? Uhhhhhh ... no, they didn't. Why not? Because they were too busy looking for the green Honda that was ... ...still parked in the courthouse parking garage, right? Yup. The Honda seemed to be their entire focus. No need to be searching or watching MARTA stations. The Atlanta police chief, Richard Pennington, told the media: "We still thought he was still in the car. We had no reason to close down MARTA." Where did Brian Nichols head then? Apparently he got off the MARTA train at the Lenox Square Station. He certainly would have been a lot less conspicuous there than he would have been in Doraville. What did he do next? He accosted a woman on Lenox Road and forced her into her apartment. Her boyfriend was there. Nichols and the boyfriend got into a scuffle and Nichols ran. Was this reported to police? Yes, the woman and her boyfriend called 911 to report the incident. And then? Apparently the Atlanta police didn't make much of it. There's no indication that they made any connection to the courthouse murders. This incident happens within walking distance of a rapid rail station. Police could logically believe that a man, on foot, who accosts a resident near a rapid rail station might have arrived on a train from downtown. No special attention is paid to this report. What does Nichols do next? It would seem that he wandered around the Lenox Road area for a while until he came upon off-duty U.S. Customs Agent David Wilhelm. Wilhelm was working on a home he was building in the area. Nichols killed him and stole his truck. When did police discover that Wilhelm had been killed? A carpenter showed up at the house at 6:30 a.m., found the body and called the cops. Where was Nichols at that point? He had driven to Duluth, North of Atlanta, where, at two in the morning, he encountered Ashley Smith getting out of her car at an apartment complex. He forced her into her apartment. Ashley Smith, as it turns out, is a rather remarkable 26-year-old. Here's your link to read the remarkable story of what happened in Smith's apartment. In short, after almost eight hours he lets her go. As she is leaving the apartment Nichols hands Smith $40 he has in his pocket, telling her that he wouldn't be needing the money. He also asks here if there is anything he can do around the apartment, like hanging pictures or curtains, while she's gone. Smith leaves, calls 911, the SWAT team arrives, and Nichols surrenders. Is there a reward for information leading to Nichol's arrest and conviction? About $60,000, last I heard. Who will get it? Should it be anyone other than Ashley Smith? I don't think so.
