  1. You would think he was still alive from that trailer....they still run 4 Match Game shows every day om the game show network and he is on most of them!
  2. Don't they let Mike Gonzalez sway http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwh28tyryPI anymore???? Another great arm all but ruined by Bobby Cox... another former Brave helping the Rangers....
  3. If Carpenter hadn't had so many serious arm injuries, he would be a HOF'er, what a horse! Really thought the Phillies were the team to beat in the W.S. Thought it would be Phils/Yankees....hmmm, who will go to and win the W.S. now??? Rangers/Cards??? then Rangers for all the marbles???
  4. Me too! .302 BA, .366 OBP and no one gave him a shot in 1946????
  5. We are now confirming the stereotype that English people love to talk about the weather..... Heh, I'm sure it couldn't be half as bad as it is in the states. Drizzle can be the top story on the local news... Meanwhile, fall has come a bit early to the ATL, only in the 40's this am!
  6. Why focus on this like it defines baseball today? Jose Reyes is a selfish player, no shit. Also seems to be very well liked by teammates and baseball writers like Peter Gammons, he's loved for the energy he brings. Stoopid move though. By the way, Mets manager Terry Collins went along with Reyes' request to be pulled. He doesn't get a pass here. Collins told reporters he was afraid: "I could possibly lose the one thing I helped create all summer long in one instance, and I wasn't going to let that happen today." Congratulations skipper, instead you created something ugly. What this writer purposely neglected to mention was the manager getting very emotional about this. Kind of changes things doesn't it? Why not look at the teams that made it to the playoffs, against all odds, like the Cards, Diamondbacks, and Rays? Hell, I saw Chipper Jones come back from from the surgery on the torn meniscus in his knee, in two weeks. Players 15 years younger him (he's 39) wouldn't be back that soon. He gets his 15 mil a season no matter when (or if) he came back. I also saw players on the braves who haven't made any "real" money yet, risk their careers throwing way too many innings, willingly, to get into the playoffs, and yet they still didn't. and how about Dustin Pedroia's reaction to the firing of Terry Francona??? Among the most stunned was Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. A former rookie of the year and MVP, a three-time All-Star, a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award winner, and a World Series champion, Pedroia said he owes everything to Francona. [ "I love him. He's given me every opportunity in the world and given me the respect to play the game with a freedom, and that's what he allows us players to do," Pedroia said. "Geez, man, he's done everything for me and everything for my family, and he's done everything for me in the five years I've been in the big leagues. My heart's broken for him, and I wish he was back and I wish I could have played my whole career for him. It's going to be hard. I'm sure he'll come back a better manager and a better person for it. Us, as an organization, we're going to move forward together." There are good and bad stories in baseball, don't have to dig too hard to find either...sorta like as in real life.
  7. Just saw the "highlights" of the Braves-Phils game, I was wrong, Bourn came off the bag and was called out because of that...was at a restaurant for trivia, and sound was off of course, and no cc..
  8. Dan and I will be glad to, for a slight fee, give stock tips, horse racing tips, you name it! Want to know what gold will do in the future, just ask us!
  9. Well, braves season is over...really shouldn't have been since Bourn was safe at 3rd on a steal, but called out, and he would made it a 4-1 score, instead of 3-1. But, still no offense = no playoffs... was at least hoping for a one game playoff to lose, a bit less of a bitter taste in the mouths of braves fans...
  10. it can get A LOT better than this! Fun for non fans of the two collapsing teams...I don't want to see the Braves get in the playoffs either, just because, what would be the point??? Scrappy, low scoring teams can advance if they have good pitching, but the braves don't have it anymore. What would the Yankees chances be without CC. or Ivan Nova? How good would the Tigers look like without Verlander and Doug Fister? (Quincy, I sure hope the Mariners got something good for him, 7-1 1.79 ERA with the Tigers!) As I mentioned before, the braves lost their two best first half pitchers in Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens. Brandon Beachy has 169 strikeouts in only 141 innings, but he is out of steam, having never pitched more than 119 innings in a season in the minors. Mike Minor was done last Sept, and seems done now as well. He's 23. The 4 supposed studs they wouldn't trade for anyone, all have Pedro Martinez builds(to be fair, they are really young, so they may fill out) and all seem to be toast right now. Randall Delgado(21) is the only one starting right now, and can give you 5 decent innings. No one can give you more than 5 innings outside of Tim Hudson. DLowe was the best pitcher in baseball last September, but Father time seems to have finally caught up with him. And we have to pay him 15 Mil next year, no way anyone will trade for him, even if we ate 10 million... What have I forgotten? Oh yes, the entire offense is worthless right now. Well, 39 YO Chipper (Who came back about 3 weeks earlier than ARod from the same type of knee surgery ) Freddie Freeman (possible ROY)and Uggla at least get some hits. Michael Bourn has a .314 OBP since joining the Braves.. So, I guess the best thing to happen is the Braves and Cards winning tonight, and the Braves lose game 163 in St. Louis...because I do feel sorry for some of the players that really do care, Martin Prado has lost sleep for months, Brian McCann came back too soon from an injury, and is a shadow of himself....
  11. so far, can't find any info on those two, but then again it could be they are 3rd cousins or something...from the absolute best source for the truth, Wiki.... His wife, Marguerite "Margie" Rooney (née Howard), died in 2004 of heart failure, after 62 years of marriage. Rooney later wrote, "her name does not appear as often as it originally did [in my essays] because it hurts too much to write it."[31] He has four children, including a daughter, Emily Rooney, who is a TV talk show host and former ABC News producer; she currently hosts a nightly Boston-area public affairs program, Greater Boston, on WGBH. Emily's identical twin, Martha, is Chief of the Public Services Division at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. The third daughter, Ellen, is a photographer based in London. His son, Brian Rooney, has been a correspondent for ABC since the 1980s. Rooney currently lives in the Rowayton section of Norwalk, Connecticut[32] and in Rensselaerville, New York,[33] and is a longtime season ticket holder for the New York Giants.[34] [edit] Awards
  12. I don't Fred Lynn catches that either, the timing sucked hitting the wall just as he tried to put his hand over the glove to keep it bouncing out.... Of course Lynn wouldn't have caught that...He would have been on the DL! Plus, he must be in his 60s... We could have told you Proctor was toast...weird toast that can still throw mid 90's but has no secondary pitches anymore....
  13. Is what I Have read....rights issues again has kept this film from being seen for more than 70 years it appears... From Wiki.... The will of Margaret Kennedy stated that the film could be shown only at universities and museums after its original theatrical run ended. Edmund Goulding's biographer Matthew Kennedy wrote that Joan Fontaine spoke "rapturously" of The Constant Nymph. "She was nominated for a best actress Oscar for it," he stated, "and it remains a personal favorite of hers."[2] The above explanation differs significantly from that presented at the Internet Movie Database, which states that the film is no longer available because the script of the 1943 screen version derived from both the novel by Margaret Kennedy and the play by Margaret Kennedy and Basil Dean, which are legally separate, and expensive legal intervention would be needed to resolve the contractual situation. The result of these legal hurdles is that the film was unavailable for exhibition for nearly seventy years. The film received its first authorized public screening in decades as part of the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival. TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: TRIBUTE TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS FILM ARCHIVE 8:00 PM 112 min romance Constant Nymph, The (1943) A composer finds inspiration in his wife's romantic cousin. Dir: Edmund Goulding Cast: Charles Boyer, Joan Fontaine, Alexis Smith. CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Edmund Goulding. Charles Boyer, Joan Fontaine, Alexis Smith, Brenda Marshall, Charles Coburn, Dame May Whitty, Peter Lorre, Joyce Reynolds, Jean Muir, Montague Love, Edward (Eduardo) Ciannelli. Intensely romantic story of a Belgian gamine (Fontaine) who's madly in love with a self-serious and self-absorbed composer (Boyer). He marries a socialite (Smith) without ever realizing the depth of his own feelings for the younger girl. Touching, intelligent, and beautifully realized, with sweeping music by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Margaret Kennedy's novel and play were adapted by Kathryn Scola. Filmed before in 1928 and 1934.
  14. Your luck might change this weekend in Washington. I am going to Friday night's game, weather permitting. Strasburg pitching. But we are due for some losses. Been winning more often lately than we can sustain. If we keep up like this, we will get close to .500. I can't see it! Or not... I think the Nats make it to .500 and the braves spend Oct playing quite a bit of golf. Really hard to believe the Red Sox and Braves could both collapse like this....
  15. :tup Or how about the Matt Damon's of the world making tens of millions a year? Do the same people who won't watch pro Basketball/Football/Baseball anymore, not watch or rent movies these days either????
  16. Bet he doesn't bother for less than a mere million.
  17. You know, he would be a very expensive 7th/8th inning guy, but with his "Stuff" he would probably do great, could close, but that's not going to happen there. Put Chamberlain in the rotation, and him in the bullpen.
  18. First, congrats to the yankees, great team, blah, blah, blah Ghost, any chance??? I'd say there is about a 90% chance the Cards or even the Giants (pretty long shot now with so few games left) overtake the braves. Kind of hard to to lose Jair Jurrjens (1.87 ERA at the all star break) and Tommy Hanson (2.44 ERA at the break) and still be competitive. We had 4 rookies in a row start a week ago. We don't have the Red Sox's or Yankees offense, to just pound the opponents on the days the starters don't have it. Something is clearly wrong with Brian McCann. at the break, he was hitting .310, and few would have doubted he was the best offensive Catcher in the game (at that time) then he hurt his oblique, and is hitting .197 since the break, and some of that was before getting hurt! Martin Prado is hitting .265 this year, and has only driven in 56 RBI's which would be easier to hide at 2nd base, than in left. He hit .307 or higher, the previous 3 seasons. So many players not having career years, which usually you need of course, to get in the playoffs... Eric Hinske, 11 HR 51 RBi's in less than 300 AB's last year, 10HR 28 RBI this season. (.261 before break, .181 after) Dan Uggla came on strong in the 2nd have, and leads the club in RBI's...78. Not very impressive when you consider he has 35 HR's. Possible rookie of the year, Freddie Freeman (20 HRs .286, .351 OBP) has 74. And there are many scoring opportunities every day...sorta interesting fact. Chipper Jones is hitting only .240 with no one one (but 13 HR's) but .335 with runners on (but only 4 HR's) I mentioned before I believe how very overworked the bullpen is. Eric O'Flaherty, who was injured awhile ago still has been in 75 Games Jonny Venters 82 games Craig Kimbrel 77 games Mo Rivera has never appeared in more than 74 regular season games in any season! in the immortal words of Jim Mora, Playoffs??? Oh, how could I forget, the next Hank Aaron, Jason Heyward, the JHey kid! 14 HR's 42 RBI's and robust .227 BA in 383 AB's. But hey, he is hitting . 263 in September! He just turned 22, so he's clearly not done, but he is not the impressive kid who had 10 HR's and 38 RBI's at the end of May, 2010. He has mastered grounding weakly to 2nd base. Meanwhile, the Marlins have Mike Stanton, who may be THE power hitter of the next decade. Did anyone see the 2 homers he hit the other night? One down the left field line at Joe Robbie was in the 3rd deck, ABOVE the exit, then he hit one supposedly even further to left center. Amazing...
  19. an interesting article on him from 2005 http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/01/nyregion/01jazz.html
  20. Thanks, Conrad! . . . . Well, more criticism of the new changes... http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Netflix-says-its-sorry-then-apf-1912482126.html?x=0
  21. Case in point Funny, I finally signed up for netflix a few weeks back (I can be a wee bit stubborn at times, and those damn pop ups, then pop unders pissed me off) but since I don't have much, whatyacallit, money...I decided it would help feed my recent desire to watch all the old TV shows of my youth like Ironside, Mannix, etc...so went looking for the DVD side of the business, and like you Russell, couldn't find it! But, being stubborn, I finally found the link after much searching... it does exist...they just don't want you to find it... https://dvd.netflix.com/ I really have no interest in streaming video....maybe down the road if the technology (and my connection) catch up to no pauses/glitches/etc but I guess like with cd's , mine is a minority viewpoint...
  22. Funny, I have always hated Wendy's hamburger's taste (didn't help that I worked for them as a teenager) so now I am curious to see if they taste any better to me...
  23. Very cool audio clips! Didn't know Harry Kallas was with the 'stros too! Then again, I am sure people didn't know that Harry Carry was with the Cards, White Sox and A's! Funny, the braves are in real trouble too, but it doesn't seem to get 1/10th press the Red Sox losing ways is....same issue too, too many starters not able to pitch...but now "we" have overworked the best 3 relievers in baseball, and now they are looking quite hittable....well, two of them....Not looking forward to facing the Phils to end the season...
  24. the latest email I have gotten from them....I just LOVE the way they worded that one sentence! Very professional. They sure are understanding to the fact that there might be some confusion on this, or that folks might think it's spam...never occurs to them that they have been telling us for years that they would NEVER ask for our SS#, or that even if you are not close to making 20K mentioned as being the the number they will need to send your deposits to the IRS, they still need your Tax ID to keep on file...
