  1. No, but the booklet has a paragraph of "Producer's Notes" by Michael Cuscuna in English. I don't think I've ever seen a TOCJ with an English translation of the liner notes. All the fold-outs I've seen have been reprints of the original English album notes. Since this album only has been released in Japan, there are no English liner notes to reproduce, and that's why we only get liner notes in Japanese this time, I suppose.
  2. amazon.de says 4th June.
  3. Re: Frank Foster's Manhattan Fever "Tracks 1-6 were released in 1968 and feature the saxophonist in a swinging sextet. The second session, a nonet [sic] augmented by a second reed player, has been in the vaults since it was recorded in early 1969, and offers a fresh look at one of jazz's most versatile tenor players." This means that we get the unissued 1969 session as well! I wonder what?
  4. According to the info that's now up at worldsrecords.com: "Featuring two different 10-piece bands, the first seven tracks were released on two long-out-of-print LPs in the late 70s and the last five tracks are gems from the second session issued here for the first time." That must mean that it includes the following two sessions: Stanley Turrentine Tentet Donald Byrd (tp) Julian Priester (tb) Jerry Dodgion (as, fl) Stanley Turrentine (ts) Joe Farrell (ts, fl) Pepper Adams (bars, cl) Kenny Barron (p) Bucky Pizzarelli (g) Ron Carter (b) Mickey Roker (d) Duke Pearson (arr) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, February 17, 1967 1839 tk.4 She's A Carioca Blue Note BN-LA 394-H2 1840 tk.9 Samba Do Aviao - 1841 tk.14 Manha De Carnaval Blue Note LT 993 1842 tk.15 What Now, My Love? - 1843 tk.24 Night Song Blue Note BN-LA 394-H2 1844 tk.32 Here's That Rainy Day Blue Note LT 993 1845 tk.41 Blues For Del - * Stanley Turrentine Best Album (Blue Note BN-LA 394-H2) * Stanley Turrentine - New Time Shuffle (Blue Note LT 993) Stanley Turrentine Tentet Blue Mitchell, Tommy Turrentine (tp) Julian Priester (tb) Jerry Dodgion (as, fl) Stanley Turrentine (ts) Al Gibbons (ts, bcl) Pepper Adams (bars, cl) McCoy Tyner (p) Walter Booker (b) Mickey Roker (d) Duke Pearson (arr) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, June 9, 1967 1904 tk.16 With This Ring Blue Note unissued 1905 tk.15 Silver Tears - 1906 tk.20 A Bluish Bag - 1907 tk.26 Come Back To Me - 1908 tk.30 The Days Of Wine And Roses - 1909 tk.45 Message To Michael Blue Note rejected This means that the New Time Shuffle album isn't complete here, and that Cuscuna thus must be planning a later CD with the 6/23/67 session, which has the remaining tracks, plus probably the 7/28/67 session, which has several unissued tracks, and perhaps even the 1/25/68 session. Here's the cover:
  5. And according to fnac.com the next batch is: Stan Getz 1954 Benny Goodman 1949-1951 Slim Gaillard 1951-1953 Benny Carter 1954 Charlie Barnet 1949 Vol. 2 (sic; should be 1940) The release date is June, so either the earlier monthly schedule has slowed down, or May will see more reprints of OOP titles instead.
  6. Francois, I thought you had written an excellent post in reply to my question, and I was going to get back to it, but now it's gone?!
  7. Blue Note Quality Control
  8. Yes, and the Stanley Turrentine has had a name change to A Bluish Bag. This is very interesting since that is the title of one of the tunes from the unissued 6/9/67 session! Stanley Turrentine Tentet Blue Mitchell, Tommy Turrentine (tp) Julian Priester (tb) Jerry Dodgion (as, fl) Stanley Turrentine (ts) Al Gibbons (ts, bcl) Pepper Adams (bars, cl) McCoy Tyner (p) Walter Booker (b) Mickey Roker (d) Duke Pearson (arr) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, June 9, 1967 1904 tk.16 With This Ring Blue Note unissued 1905 tk.15 Silver Tears - 1906 tk.20 A Bluish Bag - 1907 tk.26 Come Back To Me - 1908 tk.30 The Days Of Wine And Roses - 1909 tk.45 Message To Michael Blue Note rejected But the price indicates a single CD and in that case there will not be room to also include the tracks from the Best Album compilation, which were recorded on the same sessions as New Time Shuffle. In other words, the bonus tracks will not be the additional tunes recorded at the same sessions, but tunes recorded on a different session, which would be kind of strange! OK, I guess in due time we will see exactly what's on the CD and what's not...
  9. jazzdisco.org has an Elvin Jones Discography, even if it isn't on the main page yet. It shows that Elvin recorded one session in 1948, one in 1955, 8 in 1956 and 14 in 1957 before the Village Vanguard set. I haven't heard the 1948 Detroit session, but that one in particular should be interesting for those who want to compare early Elvin.
  10. According to the info at jazzmessengers.com all 14 tracks are there. Total time is listed as 79:26. Both albums are also "PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE ON CD!", although several of us have the Japanese CD edition of At The D.J. Lounge. It's released on Jazz Beat, which, if anyone didn't guess that already, is yet another Disconforme label. They are also releasing My Mother's Eyes, an album Stitt recorded for Pacific Jazz about the same time, on the just slightly less new Groove Hut label. The third Stitt CD they have coming out is Tune Up! + Constellation on Gambit, which probably is a straight rip of the OOP 32 Jazz twofer.
  11. It's an excellent quintet session from 1966 with Kenny Burrell on guitar. Hiroshi is worth a try; I got it from him some time ago. If he can still get it, it will be much cheaper than those import prices. After Mr. Tanno come other Japanese options like amazon.co.jp or hmv.co.jp. I notice that the latter has the CD shipping within 2-3 days, so it may still be available. It's sold for ¥2,345, which should be about $20.
  12. I'll try. The earlier Mosaic LP set covered Hodges's 1951-55 Norgran material. The Blue Moon series for some reason only went to 1954. If you buy Volume 3, 4 & 5 of the Blue Moon series you get the complete 1951-54 Norgran sessions, but you will lack the two 1955 sessions. I'm not aware of a CD release of the 1955 sessions. Remaining to be released on Classics are the last 1954 tracks and the 1955 sessions. We feared that Classics had come to a definite halt, but this month a new batch will be released after almost a year's hiatus, so hopefully another Hodges CD (or possibly two) covering the 1954-55 material can be released soon. On Classics you should get 1950-1951 (only the last four tracks are Norgran material though), 1951-1952, 1952-1954 and the next one or two Hodges CDs Classics puts out. By the way, Lone Hill Jazz will come out with a Johnny Hodges/Wild Bill Davis "Project" which will include their 8 albums from the 60s. Those make up a chunk of what could be a possible future third Mosaic set of Hodges on Verve.
  13. It's from 1993. Did the Rare Groove series at all exist in 1993 yet? It certainly looks different from regular Blue Note reissues. It may very well be that those early releases were part of a new series intended for groove-oriented material, but the actual name "Rare Groove Series" hadn't been invented yet. That way they could be seen as part of the same series. It' just that the series only got a specific name after awhile.
  14. Yes, I saw on worldsrecords.com that this batch finally is coming out. It was supposed to come out in May 2006 but then Classics had another long hiatus. I feared that we had seen the last batch, but I'm very glad that that isn't the case. Do you have any info about about what has been behind this long second hiatus or this sudden reappearance of the label? As for the batch, well, the Monk is readily available of course, and the Ellington material was on the now OOP Capitol Mosaic, but what I've heard from the Krupa small group recordings for Clef from these years really is excellent, with many fine sidemen, and Bechet is a jazz giant, who admittedly recorded a lot during his final decade, but always on a high level. I'm not familiar with the Bushkin material but that may be another case of Classics making available rare material that not many have heard in a long time. Anyway, I'm glad that the label continues and am looking forward to future batches. Woody Herman's 1941-44 Decca recordings, and Charlie Barnet's post-1940 recordings are some of the things I want to see.

  16. They didn't.
  17. Perhaps this is the right time for the big bands to finally come back!?
  18. Well, 1964 *is* over 20 years ago, so the statement is technically correct! And it will be interesting to hear Dannie Richmond on piano...
  19. A 2-CD set with all those sessions is another definite possibility. Even less reason to call it New Time Shuffle in that case! Actually, thinking about it, the last few years each Connoisseur batch has included a double CD. In 2004 it was Horace Silver's United States Of Mind, in 2005 Ike Quebec's Complete 45 Sessions, and in 2006 Lou Blackburn's Complete Imperial Sessions. Is the Turrentine this year's 2-CD set? I'm a bit surprised actually that this hitherto unknown site (to me anyway) has the titles in the upcoming Connoisseur batch, and yet there has been no insider information posted on the Organissimo board about that batch (AFAIK). Usually this board (or the old BNBB pre-2003) has been the first place to read about at least a tentative list.
  20. Yes, and with that all of Hill's 60s Blue Note sessions have come out on CD. Who would have thought that 10 years ago? I think it has transpired that it was intended for release as Change already in the 60s.
