When was this recorded and what label was it on originally? AMG isn't helpful.

What is it with Lou Donaldson and rejected Blue Note sessions? His two last BN sessions are rejected too, including one with Lonnie Smith: Lou Donaldson Sextet Lou Donaldson (as) Herman Foster (p) Mark Elf (g) Bob Cranshaw (el-b) Willie Seaberry (d) Raymond Orchart (cga) Claudia Moore (vo) A&R Studios, NYC, February 4, 1975 15345 (tk.5/6) Make Someone Happy Blue Note rejected 15346 (tk.2) Don't Take Your Love From Me - 15347 (tk.3) When I Think About You - 15342 (tk.2) Do Me Like You Do - 15343 (tk.2) What Now, My Love? - 15344 (tk.3) We'll Be Together Again - Lou Donaldson Septet Irvin Stokes (tp) Lou Donaldson (as) Lonnie Smith (org) Mark Elf (g) Bob Cranshaw (b) Willie Seaberry (d) Raymond Orchart (cga) A&R Studios, NYC, February 5, 1975 Untitled Original, #1 Blue Note rejected Untitled Original, #2 - Untitled Original, #3 - 15339 (tk.3 or tk.8/9) Don't Worry About It George - 15340 (tk.2) Funky Mama - 15341 (tk.1/2) Misty - Many rejected tracks on earlier Blue Note sessions too. For me it's the opposite; I prefer Stitt on alto. The Bird link perhaps. That was another one of those maddening Orrin-Keepnews-produced CDs, where no original album was complete. Fortunately all three have now come out on CD, if you want to have them complete. Inter-Action with Zoot Sims and My Main Man with Bennie Green were both on Japanese CDs not that many years ago, and Burnin' has just been released by the Andorrans on a Barry Harris twofer called Breakin' It Up. The rationale for that album coupling is that they had the same trio recorded on two consecutive days, with Stitt added the second day. Since the CD isn't under Stitt's name this reissue may have slipped under the radar of some Stitt collectors.

That's Criss's first leader session from 1949. It's an early gem and considering its strength I can't believe that Criss's next leader session was in 1956. The 1949 session was half of a Clef 10" LP which also had Tommy Turk's only leader session. That 10" LP in its turn made up half of a Norgran 12" LP titled An Evening Of Jazz, which has been out on a Japanese CD. The 1949 session has also been on a Fresh Sound CD. Sonny Criss is IMO a strong candidate for being the most underrated or underappreciated jazz musician. He always sounds astonishingly good, and it's difficult to understand how he could go long periods without recording.

Yes. Although it never ceases to amaze me how many new Ella compilations they can come up with. A staggering amount for years, and they just keep coming. Those are not for me, though. I turn to the Japanese, the Andorrans and Mosaic for new-to-CD stuff from the Universal vaults.

One can use an online translation service like http://babelfish.altavista.com in such cases, and then you get: 1. Rocker 2. autumn in New York 3. God child 4. ready is ア tramp 5. イッツ only ア paying per moon 6. the my シャイニング hour 7. all across the city 8. ホワイル ウィ アー young 9. rust knight ホエン ウィ ワー young So it's obviously the same!

You just saved me the embarrassment of starting a thread called "How come my Boooby Hutcherson and Tony Williams Selects aren't numbered?" If I were you, I'd send them back to Mosaic and INSIST that they be numbered. Or you could number them "0001" on your own and sell them on ebay. Lol, I was thinking the same thing!

The way to do it is to use Google's Advanced Search and put the domain name "organissimo.org" in the Domain box and search for an exact phrase like "Joe Guy". You will get all threads were "Joe Guy" is mentioned. You can also directly in the ordinary search box write: site:organissimo.org "Joe Guy" and get the same result.
-
OK, here are three threads where Joe Guy is mentioned. (And I had forgotten that I myself posted about him on one of the threads. -_- ) Who were they? Cootie Williams and 'Round Midnight What is the 1st known recording of Monk?
-
Well, the title is The Complete Mercury Max Roach Plus Four Sessions so that indicates that the Argo isn't there. But of course it's all owned by Universal and is by the same group, so why it wasn't included in the first place is a good question.

West Coast Jazz ... East Coast Jazz ... it's all just an offshoot/extension of Hawaiian Jazz.

The 1946 session had been floating around among collectors, but last year came out on an RLR CD called First Giant Steps. That CD also has a live session with Johnny Hodges from 1954, on which Coltrane actually solos, unlike on the studio recordings with Hodges.
-
The 1946 Hawaii recordings are pretty decent-sounding, to my ears anyway, and we get a lot of Coltrane solos on them!

1965 Downbeat Reader's Poll Best Organist
Swinging Swede replied to Soul Stream's topic in General Discussion
No Johnny Hammond Smith either, and yet he had done over ten albums since 1959. -
Does anyone have TOCJ-1610 Jimmy Smith Trio With L.D.?
Swinging Swede replied to Aftab's topic in Re-issues
No fold-out! I checked a couple of other TOCJs of Japan only albums, and they had no fold-outs either. Your copy should have an obi strip to be complete though. -
Does anyone have TOCJ-1610 Jimmy Smith Trio With L.D.?
Swinging Swede replied to Aftab's topic in Re-issues
No, but the booklet has a paragraph of "Producer's Notes" by Michael Cuscuna in English. I don't think I've ever seen a TOCJ with an English translation of the liner notes. All the fold-outs I've seen have been reprints of the original English album notes. Since this album only has been released in Japan, there are no English liner notes to reproduce, and that's why we only get liner notes in Japanese this time, I suppose. -
amazon.de says 4th June.

Re: Frank Foster's Manhattan Fever "Tracks 1-6 were released in 1968 and feature the saxophonist in a swinging sextet. The second session, a nonet [sic] augmented by a second reed player, has been in the vaults since it was recorded in early 1969, and offers a fresh look at one of jazz's most versatile tenor players." This means that we get the unissued 1969 session as well! Frank Foster Septet Burt Collins (tp, picc tp -1/5) Jimmy Cleveland (tb -1/5) Ed Pazant (as, fl, ob -1/5) Frank Foster (ts, acl) George Cables (p) Buster Williams (b) Mickey Roker (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, January 31, 1969 1. 3322 tk.1 Slug's Bag Blue Note BST 84316 2. 3323 tk.7 Buster Brown - 3. 3324 tk.15 Fly By Night - 4. 3325 tk.23 Hip Shakin' - 5. 3326 tk.27 What's New From The Monster Mill - 6. 3327 tk.31 The House That Love Built - * Frank Foster (not released) (Blue Note BST 84316) Since it even got a catalogue number it must have had an intended album title. I wonder what?

According to the info that's now up at worldsrecords.com: "Featuring two different 10-piece bands, the first seven tracks were released on two long-out-of-print LPs in the late 70s and the last five tracks are gems from the second session issued here for the first time." That must mean that it includes the following two sessions: Stanley Turrentine Tentet Donald Byrd (tp) Julian Priester (tb) Jerry Dodgion (as, fl) Stanley Turrentine (ts) Joe Farrell (ts, fl) Pepper Adams (bars, cl) Kenny Barron (p) Bucky Pizzarelli (g) Ron Carter (b) Mickey Roker (d) Duke Pearson (arr) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, February 17, 1967 1839 tk.4 She's A Carioca Blue Note BN-LA 394-H2 1840 tk.9 Samba Do Aviao - 1841 tk.14 Manha De Carnaval Blue Note LT 993 1842 tk.15 What Now, My Love? - 1843 tk.24 Night Song Blue Note BN-LA 394-H2 1844 tk.32 Here's That Rainy Day Blue Note LT 993 1845 tk.41 Blues For Del - * Stanley Turrentine Best Album (Blue Note BN-LA 394-H2) * Stanley Turrentine - New Time Shuffle (Blue Note LT 993) Stanley Turrentine Tentet Blue Mitchell, Tommy Turrentine (tp) Julian Priester (tb) Jerry Dodgion (as, fl) Stanley Turrentine (ts) Al Gibbons (ts, bcl) Pepper Adams (bars, cl) McCoy Tyner (p) Walter Booker (b) Mickey Roker (d) Duke Pearson (arr) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, June 9, 1967 1904 tk.16 With This Ring Blue Note unissued 1905 tk.15 Silver Tears - 1906 tk.20 A Bluish Bag - 1907 tk.26 Come Back To Me - 1908 tk.30 The Days Of Wine And Roses - 1909 tk.45 Message To Michael Blue Note rejected This means that the New Time Shuffle album isn't complete here, and that Cuscuna thus must be planning a later CD with the 6/23/67 session, which has the remaining tracks, plus probably the 7/28/67 session, which has several unissued tracks, and perhaps even the 1/25/68 session. Here's the cover:

And according to fnac.com the next batch is: Stan Getz 1954 Benny Goodman 1949-1951 Slim Gaillard 1951-1953 Benny Carter 1954 Charlie Barnet 1949 Vol. 2 (sic; should be 1940) The release date is June, so either the earlier monthly schedule has slowed down, or May will see more reprints of OOP titles instead.

Francois, I thought you had written an excellent post in reply to my question, and I was going to get back to it, but now it's gone?!
