  1. AMG reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine calls this album "shockingly good".
  2. I have the Fuller/Gillespie CD, but certainly wouldn't mind seeing the Fuller/Moody!
  3. My vote: Kenny Burrell - Freedom Jackie McLean - High Frequency Sam Rivers - A New Conception Jimmy Smith - Minor Fare (unissued 1961 session) Louis Smith - Smithville (in stereo and with two bonus tracks) Larry Young - Contrasts
  4. Johnny Richards in younger days:
  5. Did you know that Stralsund belonged to Sweden 1648-1814? It was part of the province Swedish Pomerania.
  6. The 1988 CD also had a famous error - the spine had the album title spelt as Trumpeta Toccata. I guess the one constant in the various reissue series over the last 20 years is the Blue Note quality control!
  7. Excellent news indeed, and I hope that it, in addition to having the two extra tracks, also will be in stereo for the first time. All Japanese releases (AFAIK) have been in mono, since that was the only way it was released originally, but since it was recorded in 1958, it must have been recorded in stereo.
  8. I've been referring to it as Illusion. Sounds more album-like IMO. But what do I know? I didn't particularly like Pax, and thought it should have been called Intuition.
  9. Yup, the original performances have been faithfully recreated in stereo by Japanese robots.
  10. European EMI titles were released in the Cactus Data Shield format from July 2003 to May 2006. The last Cactus batch was the one from May that included Cannonball Adderley, Stan Kenton, and the aforementioned Jazz Crusaders. After that they returned to Red Book CDs, including the June Connoisseurs. Not that there has been any official EMI statement about it. I wonder why they abandoned such an improved format?
  11. In Jimmy Smith's case, if you include albums that were partially recorded in 1957, you get a whopping 17: A Date With Jimmy Smith, Volume 1 A Date With Jimmy Smith, Volume 2 At The Organ, Volume 1 At The Organ, Volume 2 The Sounds Of Jimmy Smith Plays Pretty Just For You Cherokee Jimmy Smith Trio + LD Groovin’ At Smalls’ Paradise, Volume 1 Groovin’ At Smalls’ Paradise, Volume 2 Groovin’ At Smalls’ Paradise, Volume 3 (not released, I know, but enough material was recorded for a third album) Lonesome Road House Party (2 of 3 tracks) Confirmation (2 of 3 tracks) The Sermon! (1 of 3 tracks) On The Sunny Side (1 of 8 tracks) Special Guests (2 of 6 tracks)
  12. It's either Oscar Peterson or Jimmy Smith depending on how you count. In 1959 alone O.P. recorded the following 13 albums: A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra The Jazz Soul of Oscar Peterson Plays the Duke Ellington Song Book Plays the George Gershwin Song Book Plays the Richard Rodgers Song Book Plays the Jerome Kern Song Book Plays the Cole Porter Song Book Plays the Harry Warren Song Book Plays the Irving Berlin Song Book Plays the Harold Arlen Song Book Plays the Jimmy McHugh Song Book Plays Porgy and Bess Swinging Brass with the Oscar Peterson Trio If you include co-leader sessions you get 15: Sonny Stitt Sits In with the Oscar Peterson Trio Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson
  13. There is also a whole unissued LD Argo session from 1965, plus some unissued tracks from the other sessions. A Mosaic seems like an interesting idea in this case, although I suppose that if all Argo sessions are included it should be a regular Mosaic set rather than a Select. Some of the Argo albums, but far from all, have come out on CD in Japan, btw. This might be a good place to also mention that there are three "rejected" LD Blue Note sessions from the 1971-1975 years. None of the albums from that period have come out on CD either. Thus LD's 1971-1975 output might be another Mosaic idea, although I realize that the material probably is too "commercial" for what Mosaic usually puts out.
  14. LOL, I was thinking the same thing!
  15. Folks, don't miss the Coltrane/Getz/Peterson encounter Jim posted (even if it's not YouTube) ! I'm a Getz fan, but I must say he pales beside the mighty Trane in this performance.
  16. What was Jutta Hipp, a transvestite? I've seen this claim, that Dodo Greene was the first woman to record for Blue Note, before. But really, how can anyone overlook Jutta Hipp who had several Blue Note LPs under her own name? She's not a woman, because she's German?! And if we include sideman sessions (or should I say sidewoman sessions), these women also had recorded for Blue Note: Vivian Smith (p) on the Pigmeat Markham session in 1945. Lorraine Geller (p) on one of the Best From The West sessions in 1954. Jutta Hipp (p) in 1956 obviously. Sarah Bavo (voc) on the Sabu Martinez session in 1957. Dottie Dudley (org) on the Leon Eason 45 session in 1959. Shirley Scott (org) on Stanley Turrentine's "Dearly Beloved" session in 1961. In any case, I picked up the Dodo Greene Connoisseur several years ago and remember noticing an obvious Dinah Washington influence in her. And Dinah Washington is probably my favourite female singer. Haven't listened to the Dodo Greene in a long time though. Will have to rectify that soon.
  17. That's the concert where Stan Getz joined the Coltrane group (or should I say Miles-less Miles group?) on two numbers (and Oscar Peterson replaced Kelly on the last of those two). I think someone mentioned on this board recently that a video exists. A DVD should come out of this concert!
  18. Yes, in Swedish too (hardly surprising). That was the first thing I thought of when I saw all this FN business, since one is so used to seeing those initials meaning just that.
  19. Rachel McAdams is Canadian too. And this is what Wikipedia has to say about William Hurt: "Fluent in French, Hurt maintains a home outside Paris." Oops!
  20. Why do you post in English, a language created in Europe? Can't you create something of your own?
  21. I'm surprised noone has posted this previously. The great saxman himself Another unforgettable performance by the sax master
  22. Dizzy Gillespie on The Muppet Show
  23. Nasty leg breaks (you have been warned): Kick boxing The commentator even says "Excellent kick" in the second video before he realizes what has happened. And Henrik Larsson's leg break from some years ago He did come back in great form though.
