  1. Ok, I am a bit late to this party, having hoped that after your big splash playing live in NYC that the stores here in NYC might carry this cd. After several attempts to order the thing, I just decided to send JimA. the cold hard cash. Have listened now to the cd several times and I am really enjoying it. The first thing that struck me was how nicely balanced the talent in the band is and how everyone contributes and gets to be heard. All three take solos that I liked. Also I liked the writing on several of the original tunes, but in particular I liked "Smoking Section" and I think that is my favorite tune on the CD. I thought the intro to Tenderly by Joe was a fantastic change of pace from the frankly danceable tunes (making me think you guys must really really shine when heard live) that preceded it and then of course, your version of Tenderly- very different and engaging. Congratulations to all of you - I am really enjoying this one!
  2. I love this album too. As I have said before, this is my favorite working band, so what's not to like? It's a live recording, the recording quality is excellent and the band is on. The tunes are the usual mixed bag of Monk tunes, a standard (Good Morning Heartache- in this case) and Motian's own quirky bunch of tunes. I think I see why he likes Monk, because Motian also like very simple melodies as Monk does. I am not sure how I would rate it against other Motian Trio albums, as I find it hard to decide between them, but I can't think of one that is clearly superior to this.
  3. well FFA it looked like more than a discographry to me. Each album has at least several pages of commentary and I consider a discographry to be merely a list of all of the artist's albums. also while the number of albums discussed is substantial, I am not sure each one is discussed.
  4. I saw it in paperback. the author is P. N. Wilson. written 2001 and appears to deal with just the music. anyone read it and have comments? It looks very good from a brief flip through the pages. why haven't I seen this before.
  5. Thanks GA for the report. not good news though.
  6. It was yesterday and they showed him at his estate outside London. I love the guy. He sits down at the B3 organ and plays the opening notes from some Jimmy Smith riff...wish I could remember which one.
  7. What you guys who support that dad paying in all cases are leaving out is the scenario posed by my friend's case (see above). what if supporting the child you were told you would not have means taking money away from your current wife's medical treatment. Who are you disrespecting now? Should the current wife be consulted? After all she is working and they have pooled their money. What if she says she feels no obligation to support the child? Do you ignore her?
  8. I don't think your friend is an asshole, either. The topic of this thread refers to the guy in the story I linked. Obviously, every case is different. And I don't blame you for not having sympathy for the woman, but not having sympathy for the child, who had no choice in this matter, is rather callous, imo. Yes, Jim You have a point there, I guess if I really think about it, the kid deserves sympathy - I just have a hard time separating the kid from the Mom, and from my friend's rather dire financial situation. But when I really think about it, yes you are right about the kid.
  9. I have a friend who was dating a woman a few years back and she told him she was on the pill and they had a mutual understanding there would be no children. This was a fling and no real love match. They later broke up (she dumped him) and after the break up, she is pregnant with what he admits is his baby (he got tested). She later told others she was tired of the dating scene and wanted a child- she did not share this with my friend whose baby she decided to have unbeknownst to him. Meanwhile, he finds mrs. right and gets married for real, but the fling woman is hitting my friend up for total support of her and the child while she is unwilling to lift a finger. My friend's wife later has unfortunately some real health issues and they were temporariily without health insurance and so they have a six figure medical bill to deal with and he does not really have the funds to support his sick wife and this baby he never agreed to have. I do not think my friend is an asshole and I have little sympathy for fling woman and her baby. I think that in this day and age, with birth control, the decision to have and raise a child must be consensual. If you have a scenario as my friend has - I don't think it is fair to him.
  10. yeah, Ratliff is on a roll. I have one Roy Haynes story. in the last year, I was waiting in line at the Vanguard to see the Paul Motian Trio. Standing in line next to me was Roy Haynes - who looked and particularly dressed like a college student.
  11. It was scheduled, like the Miles box for the 1st quarter of 2006. I see Miles has a new date, where's Sonny?
  12. interesting to me how on the head of the title track "Time Lines" (track 2) there is that repeated note for an almost absurd number of reps. At first I found this annoying, but lately I am wondering if the audacious Andrew has managed to pull it off. Some of the other heads for different tunes do not thrill me however, and that may be the weakness of the album for me, I find that the melodies from the old Blue Notes almost without exception to be very engrossing.
  13. I did not like Dusk and sold my copy and now I don't remember it very well.
  14. me too, but maybe its the "skeith effect"
  15. I know there is another thread on this one, but not in this forum. after killing that other thread I felt duty bound to revive one here. I am warming up a bit to this cd. A few of the tunes, the opener "Malachi" and its closer twin- the solo version are nice, and I also like "Smooth" but on the whole I don't think the tunes are as strong as on his classic Blue Notes and some of the later ones. As for the soloing, I like a number of his solos and my impressions of the other guys are improving. It's not a knockout album, but has some good moments and my opinion on this cd seems to change day by day.
  16. What is Mediaface? thanks again everyone.
  17. David, does the product you linked on amazon come with software to set up the labels or must you buy that separately? thanks
  18. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!!
  19. How have those of you who have gone to the thin or slim jewel cases figured out how to label the spine? I guess I am talking about the tray card, since the liner notes fit ok in the case, it's just that if you store these babies with the spine facing you - you have no way to tell what cd it is. Do any of those commercially available labelling kits do that?
  20. Happy Birthday Wesbed
  21. Joe G You may want to consider a multi-region DVD player which will play any DVD from anywhere. They can be had for around $100.
  22. Doesn't this thread belong in the New Releases forum? I love Andrew Hill, and just got this a few days ago, but on maybe two listenings, I am a bit underwhelmed. Some of the solos other than Andrew's sound a bit "generic" to me. I may change my mind however. sound quality seems ok to me but I have played it mostly on a Discman.
  23. This piece is sort of like a digital turntable and is meant to be paired with an outboard Digital Signal Processor. It was a Stereophile Class "B" product for many years. It is in very good shape except for a finicky loading tray, so it would probably need a bit of work to fix that. But the laser and the rest of the piece are fully functional. Orginally purchased in 1993 for about $1500, I would take $200 given the tray issue.
  24. This is a full featured preamp with a phono stage, tuner, cd, video and other auxiliary inputs. The color is black, not the usual champagne. It is in excellent condition and was completely retubed a couple of years ago. It was a Stereophile Class "C" recommended component for many years. I initially paired it with a solid state amp and it really livened up the sound and took the edginess off of much of the cd sound. So this could be a great entry to the world of tubes. Originally purchased for $1200 in 1994, I am offering this for $250 plus shipping.
