  1. Lot's more listening to do here too, but here's a couple of quick impresions. Track Onc - This reminded me of Ted Nash's "La Espada De La Noche", although it's not from that album. It's that kind of Tango/ Jazz mix and I dig it. Don't know who this is though. Track Three - "Like Sonny" -don't know who. Track Six is HHTM changes. Track nine - That sounds like a chromatic harmonica to me. The only person I know who has chops like that on that ax is Toots Thielman.
  2. Well....I still have a lot more listening to do, but I did get the first track. Here's early impressions of some tracks: Track One: I recognized Barney Bigard, Juan Tizol and Cootie Williams, figured it was a small group Ellington date, checked my collection and came up with "Jubilesta". Nice side ! Track Two: Can't ID anyone yet, but I really feel like I should recognize somebody. Track Four: Modern recording of a Django influenced guitarist. Track eight: Is that a Fletcher Henderson track? I know I've heard it before. Track Thirteen sounds like Basie. Edit to add: Thanks Marty - It's a really enjoyable set and I know it's going to get me listening more to some people I haven't listened enough too.l
  3. This from the Stax website: We are sad to let you know that former Stax Records artist, legendary bluesman, and great friend of Soulsville has passed away after suffering a massive stroke on July 27th. We have lost one of the greatest musical treasures in the world, and one of the most beloved members of the Stax family. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. We do not have details yet on memorial services, etc., but will let you know as soon as we do. Our Last Mondays in Studio A concert with Little Milton, which was scheduled for September 26th, will take place with an artist(s) yet to be determined. It will be dedicated to Little Milton and will be a celebration of

    Props for Pops

Gotta dig out some Pops for today's listening. Maybe the Satch Plays Fats to start it off.
  8. Cassiopeia Cephus Andromeda
  9. Eugene O'Neill Lee Marvin Fredric March
  10. Sorry to hear the bad news. My sincere condolences.

  12. up edit to add: OK - it's a shameless olug, but she is really worth seeing and hearing !
  13. I recieved this email tonight from Bettye's husband and my friend Kevin Kiley. Just a note to let everyone know that Bettye LaVette will be appearing on The David Letterman Show tomorrow night, Thursday, July 28. She'll be performing (for the very first time since recording it) a song from her upcoming CD on Anti- Records, "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise". Get the VCR's running - she's the real deal!
  14. Anybody form the NJ/NY area remember them playing local clubs like "The Choo Choo Club" in Garfield NJ as "The Penguins" in the early 60s ? edit to add: I guess the early 60s is TOO early - must be the mid 60s. The Rascals used to work the same joints.
  15. I agree 100%. McDuff's bass lines swing and have a beautiful logic to them. He's my favorite on organ bass too. He played upright before he became an organist. I'd like to have heard THAT !
  16. Re Track One: So that was King Curtis! I take it Red plays the head and the solo after Geroge Benson - the first solo is Curtis. I'm going to look for this record.
  17. Same here, except no box. I bought the lp reissue in the 60s that was in phony stereo and stayed with that until the recent remaster came. Now there's another.
  18. KOB: LP bought circa 1960 which I still have. 1st US cd release. The improved cd release of a couple of years ago. GS: LP bought circa 1968 which I still have. The expanded cd release that has alternated takes. Probably the body of work I have bought the most times are Louis Hot 5s and 7s. I've bought them at least 6 times.
  19. "Cheesecake" in the title. Probably some obscure slang from way back when for something else. Funny stuff! Cheesecake as a term for "girlie" photos goes back at least as far as WWII. Betty Grable, etc were "Cheesecake" queens. Whether it gets more gritty than that I'm not sure, but it does put me in mind of Louis Armstrong's stating that Barbecue was slang for a "fine chick". As in "Struttin' With Some Barbecue". Now that's pretty hip.
  20. Ok ...since nobody else has posted on this...the bass on track 4 is without a doubt Chuck Rainey.
  21. AND THE BEAT GOES ON A very appropriate closer.....
  22. I don't think there is enough of this material on individual cds to duplicate the Mosaic All Stars set, unless a European label such as Definitive has duplicated the Mosaic. If they have I'm unaware of it and I would prefer the Mosaic anyway. It's great music.
  23. I put headphones on to check this out (I gotta stop listening on the PC speakers at work!) and ...YEAH ...I know who it is. And as much as I love and admire his playing I'm not crazy about his approach to walking. edit to add: at least as demonstrated here and on some other things I've heard.
  24. The second sax on track 4.....Wayne Shorter? edit to add : It's a soprano. And I don't think it's Cranshaw.
