  1. Alright...I'm not sure I have this right. The ONLY problem is on computers? They play normally in a component system or car player ? In a two-tray stand alone cdr recorder ? If so....WTF is Sony thinking?
  2. No...he wrote "Louis Louis".
  3. Yeah...that's a great rap! "Jazz is where it's at. Everything else is bullshit ! "
  4. I assumed they were the Challenge and Retrieval were the same - why would JRT do two restorations on the same material ?
  5. Same here. As Lon said on the King Oliver thread - the sound is very important when presenting vintage music to people who are not familiar with the sound of old records. People have trouble getting past that.
  6. The Challenge set is remastered by JRT Davies also. That's the one I'd go for.
  7. Brad - does it play on a regular cd player ?
  8. Same here. Everything except for what's previously unreleased. I wish the new material was available seperately (as if the record companies EVER do that nowadays !).
  9. Chris, That's one of my favorite stories in the book. It makes me laugh everytime I read it...really, I can just picture that whole scene.
  10. I'm referring to "In Person" Atlantic 1039. This contains the classic live Drown In My Own tears cut. "At Newport" Atlantic 1289 with the equally classic A Fool For You.
  11. Also - the two live lps didn't make "The Birth Of Soul" box.
  12. Maybe the reviewer is out of his idiom.
  13. That's not it Moose. It's really all about a corporate perception that older workers will expect more, not try as hard (won't fall for the coporate con), will take more sick days or may be struck by catastophic illness, thereby being a bad bet when it comes to benefits. It's all about a corporate view of older workers not being a good financial bet.
  14. I'm 58. The lack of historical knowledge is not the exclusive domain of the younger generation - I have seen a lot of contemporaries demostrate abysmal historical knowledge AND display a real lack of basic mathmetical skills. You can extrapolate into other areas of knowledge. I've seen younger people on both sides of the equation. A college degree seems NOT to really be any indication of intelligence or lack thereof. People that want to be educated educate themselves (and some of the most educated and intelligent people I know may not have atteneded college) ....BUT you need that degree for the decent day gig. Age discrimation is a reality. It happens all the time. The powers that be want to move an older (better paid) employee out in order to replace him/her with a younger (not as highly paid ) employee. If you are over 40 or 45 and seeking a job you're going to have a tough time. "previous employment?" Don't sya musician. Your cooked if you do. I entered the public sector when I just couldn't get by any more on musician money. I'm glad I did and it's worked out well. The promotions (to a certain level)are contractual so there's no age discrimination there...but you can only get so far. After that there are a lot of factors that come into play..and for the most part they are not working in an older worker's favor.
  15. Check Mr. Personality out here The guys get shirts....
  16. Good news Chris ! I bought the last set and was dissapointed when I realized they had been edited. GOTTA get this !
  17. There aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. My main interests are music, reading, TV & movies and lateley I've renewed an interest in politics - mainly due to being apalled at the current state of affairs. My latest car has a cd player and that helps a lot, but my ride to work is short and I've gotten interested in listening to Air America on that ride. I'm reconciling myself to the idea that there are books and music, etc that I'll never get to.
  18. I was a professional musician for twenty five years before getting a day gig. I'm game.
  19. Thanks Lon. I'll check out Cliff on those. I remember him in an old movie that used to get a lot of tv play when I was a Kid. "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Ukelele Ike sings "The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze".
  20. I meant Louis scats the words "bebop" (it may have "rebop") on one of those early records - I just can't remember which. Actually I'd like to get something by Cliff Edwards - any recs ?
  21. I think Louis Armstrong scats it on one of his early records. I mean like the Hot fives/sevens or possibly one of the big band things on Columbia from the early 30s. I don't know if that's the first, but it's the earliest I know of.
  22. OK - I'm in.
  23. Keter was a GREAT player ! Rest in peace, Keter.
  24. I've been having problems for a while. With Firefox for the past 2 or 3 weeks I don't get any reply buttons - I can only lurk, SO I've been using Internet Explorer and having the sloooow loading. When I click my Organissimo link I get the error page, but if I hit the link at the bottom of that page for "Today's active topics" I get the page. I don't think it's an ISP problem either. BTW, my PC at work (I MUST use IE there) has been having the same loading problems.
